The Silver Needle
Elara stepped out of the elevator first, her hands folded neatly behind her back. She carried a casual confidence that contrasted sharply with the heavy, sterile atmosphere clinging to the hospital floor. Toby swallowed hard, his eyes darting toward her retreating figure. A brief panic seized the aide, terrified of how Julian would react to the bold remark she made inside the car. He opened his mouth to speak.
"Mr. Blackwood..." Toby began, his voice trembling in the confined space of the metal box.
Julian silenced him instantly. He shot the aide a freezing glare, a look so sharp it carried enough sheer threat to send a profound chill straight down Toby's spine.
Further down the corridor, outside the heavily guarded VIP suite, the atmosphere was soaked in despair. The renowned surgeon, Dr. Chloe Chase, stood opposite Mateo Blackwood. She sagged with obvious exhaustion.
"I am sorry, Mateo. We tried our best, but Beatrice was brought to us far too late. The brain damage she suffered is severe and irreversible. The medical team agrees that if she does not regain consciousness by tonight, we will be forced to officially declare her brain dead." Chloe removed her surgical mask and let out a weary, devastated breath.
The heavy oak cane slipped from Mateo's grip and clattered onto the polished hospital tiles. He staggered backward, his face flushed and drained of life, overwhelmed by the crushing grief washing over him.
The silence shattered. The sterile hallway erupted as the extended Blackwood relatives broke into the varied, chaotic cries of a mourning family. Some wept openly, while others forced tears into their eyes with practiced ease.
Seizing upon the emotional vulnerability of the moment, Lauren Blackwood raised her voice above the noise, loudly and viciously branding her young target.
"Leo is a jinx! Every disaster in this house starts with him." Lauren dabbed her eyes with an onion-scented handkerchief.
Between theatrical sobs, she caught the eye of her brother, Richard. A calculating, greedy look passed between them. They had waited years for this exact moment. After the old scandal, their mother had dragged them into the fold, demanding their rightful place in the family hierarchy. It was Beatrice’s iron will that had kept their unrecognized branch locked out. Now, with the matriarch practically gone, the immense family fortune was finally within reach.
Lauren turned back to her father, dropping dramatically to her knees.
"Dad, I am begging you! You must officially remove Leo from the family before that boy brings ruin to us all!" Lauren pleaded.
The chaotic noise died in an instant.
"Is that so?"
The quiet, freezing question dropped into the hallway like a stone in a frozen lake.
Julian's wheelchair rolled forward from the dark shadows of the corridor. He came to a smooth halt directly before his aunt.
"Look at me." Julian laced his words with a cold, lethal danger. "And dare say that again."
Lauren buckled under the crushing pressure. Her knees gave out, and she collapsed flat onto the floor in a cold sweat, paralyzed by the raw terror rolling off him.
Julian raised his left arm. He shifted his fingers and slowly began stroking the black prayer beads circling his wrist. The rhythmic clicking sounded like a terrifying prelude to extreme bloodshed. Every relative holding their breath knew the truth. Julian only touched those beads before letting his darker impulses erupt into violence.
He cast a dark glance across the gathered crowd, silently daring anyone else in the hallway to speak a single word against Leo.
Before he could transition from silent threats to physical punishment, a sharp, panicked scream pierced the heavy tension.
"What are you doing!?" Chloe yelled frantically from inside Beatrice's private ward. "Mateo, I caught her! She had a needle and was trying to stab Beatrice in the head!"
Everyone rushed toward the open doorway, their footsteps echoing like thunder against the tile.
Inside the room, the scene was fraught with panic. Chloe had physically pinned Elara’s wrist to the mattress. A gleaming silver needle was trapped tightly in Elara's grasp, hovering just inches from the dying matriarch's scalp.
Leo clung fiercely to Chloe's leg. His small face twisted in severe distress. When the doctor refused to budge, Leo sank his teeth right into Chloe's flesh, forcing her to comply.
Chloe cried out in pain and instantly released her grip on Elara.
Mateo stepped into the room, his grief morphing into furious demands.
"Who are you? What is this madness?" Mateo roared, pounding his fist against the doorframe.
Marcus gripped the handles of Julian's wheelchair. He glared at Elara, his frustration running high at her reckless behavior in their darkest hour.
Speaking right over the ensuing chaos, Elara looked calmly and directly at Julian.
"If you want your grandmother to wake up, I can do it," Elara stated bluntly.
The room dissolved into a furious uproar.
Chloe cradled her bitten leg and scoffed outrageously, turning a relentless, aggressive glare on the young woman standing by the bed.
"Are you a medical doctor?" Chloe sneered, stepping closer.
"No," Elara replied flatly.
"Do you hold a board-certified medical license to practice?" Chloe relentlessly questioned her.
"No." Elara offered zero apologies.
"Who trained you, then?" Chloe demanded, her tone dripping with venom.
"I just learned how to use the needles," Elara admitted with quiet ease.
Chloe laughed right in her face. The elite surgeon felt insulted by the sheer audacity of the claim. To the educated Chloe, Elara was nothing more than a delusional, dangerous attention-seeker. She figured the girl was desperately attempting to mimic 'Shark', the world-renowned, fiercely anonymous freelance surgeon famous across the globe for her miraculous silver needle techniques. Shark was a certified genius with a flawless medical record who charged impossible prices to the international elite. Billionaires begged for Shark's help. Elara was just an arrogant amateur playing an absurd game for a fleeting moment of fame.
Marcus stepped forward, horrified at the trivialization of Beatrice's fading life.
"This isn't a game, Ms. Vance," Marcus warned sternly.
"It is not a game. I can help her," Elara countered.
A hard, new certainty shone in her eyes. She stood her ground. Though she lacked formal training, she operated on pure instinct. She inexplicably knew the exact depth and the precise angle required for the silver needles to work. She repeated her vow, pledging out loud that she could save the matriarch.
Mateo raised his cane, pointing the silver tip squarely at the girl's chest.
"Guards! Physically seize that girl at once!" Mateo loudly ordered.
Two bulky security men surged forward from the hallway. Leo threw himself in front of Elara. He bared his teeth, emitting a protective, warning growl from the back of his throat.
Julian locked eyes with the advancing guards. He delivered a single, dark, menacing glance.
The guards were instantly halted in their tracks by his unspoken command.
Julian maneuvered his wheelchair closer to the hospital bed. His eyes remained steady and as cold as ice.
"You know the ultimate cost of failure," Julian stated softly.
A collective gasp ripped through the ward. Julian had just signaled his approval. The decision sent ripples of shock through Chloe, Mateo, and Marcus.
"Mr. Blackwood, you cannot be serious! Please reconsider!" Marcus pleaded, his voice cracking with immense anxiety.
"Julian, this is madness! You are letting a child murder her!" Chloe argued.
In the back corner of the room, Richard and Lauren stood side by side. They exchanged a look of quiet, sinister victory. They fully realized exactly what this meant. If Beatrice died by Elara's unqualified hand, Julian would bear the brunt of the blame for authorizing the rogue treatment. Their mother's position would be cemented, and the immense family fortune would permanently secure their previously unrecognized branch's place in the hierarchy. This foolish girl was handing them the ultimate prize on a silver platter.
Unbothered by the deadly stakes and the crushing pressure bearing down on her, Elara offered Julian a faint, deeply sure smile.
She turned her back on the furious crowd. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a cheap hair tie topped with a small plastic shark charm. With casual, methodical movements, she gathered her hair up and secured it tightly, keeping her face clear of any loose strands.
She picked up a medical swab and carefully sterilized her instrument. She wiped the fine metal down until it gleamed beneath the harsh fluorescent lights of the hospital ward.
The room fell dead silent. Everyone held their breath. Under the watchful, judgmental eyes of everyone in the room, Elara steadied her breathing. Without a single tremble in her fingers, she steadily inserted the silver needle directly into Beatrice's scalp.
