The Hospital Confrontation
A profound, cold stillness radiated from Julian, chilling the very air in the study.
"Go on," Julian commanded, his low voice slicing through the heavy atmosphere.
"Someone deliberately informed your grandmother about the kidnapping. She collapsed on the spot. Her heart gave out from the sheer shock of it. They rushed her to the hospital," Marcus reported, his stoic facade cracking under the grim news. He lowered his gaze to the polished floor, his shoulders stiffening in defeat. "The medical prognosis is incredibly bleak."
Elara felt Leo grow rigid in her arms. The child whimpered, burying his small face into her shoulder, instinctively sensing the suffocating tension pressing down on the room.
Julian sat unmoving. The silence stretched until it threatened to crush them all. The air grew brittle.
"Have the car brought around. We are going to the hospital," Julian ordered.
"I can stay behind with Leo and keep him out of the family drama. He has been through enough today," Elara suggested, adjusting her hold on the boy.
Julian shifted his sharp gaze to her, shattering the thought in a single, uncompromising glance. "You are coming with us. Bring the boy."
Elara pressed her lips together and nodded. The person holding the checkbook made the rules.
Ten minutes later, a custom black Maybach tore down the private highway. The luxurious interior was cloaked in a fraught, unbearable quiet. Elara sat opposite Julian, keeping Leo securely anchored in her lap. She observed Julian closely. He leaned back against the leather seat, his eyes closed. His chronic, exhaustion-fueled pain sharpened into something dark and palpable, rolling off him in dangerous waves. The volatile shift in his demeanor flooded the enclosed space.
"Your medication, Mr. Blackwood," Toby said quickly from the front passenger seat.
He hurriedly rummaged in his coat pockets and extended a small plastic pill bottle toward the back seat. Before Julian could reach it, the heavy tires hit a sudden rut in the road. Toby bobbled the bottle. It slipped from his thick fingers and bounced across the plush floor mats, rolling to a halt near Elara's boots.
Elara picked the bottle up. She spotted the foreign text wrapping the label, instantly recognizing the chemical name printed underneath. It was heavy psychiatric medication used for severe neural suppression. She extended her hand, offering the bottle to her new boss.
Julian moved with blinding speed. His large hand closed firmly over hers. He squeezed her delicate fingers aggressively against the hard plastic of the bottle, trapping her hand in a punishing, iron grip. He glared holes into the medicine, breathed through his teeth, and released her just as quickly as he had struck.
He snatched the bottle from her palm, popped the cap with his thumb, and dumped the dry pills into his mouth. He swallowed them without water. Without so much as a glance in her direction, he tossed the empty bottle out the open window into the rushing wind.
He is fundamentally not right in the head. Elara made the internal judgment, keeping her expression perfectly blank while holding Leo closer.
"Speed up," Julian commanded, forcing his eyes shut once more, enduring his internal agony as the chemical settled in his system.
They arrived at the emergency wing of the heavily guarded private hospital twenty minutes later. Armed guards maintained a strict cordon around the glass sliding doors, trying to hold back the sheer chaos. Swarms of invasive reporters crowded the perimeter, their camera flashes carving harsh, blinding shadows into the night.
Linda Blackwood stood at the front of the barricade, acting with haughty entitlement. She dragged Sophia Chapman by the elbow, pulling the elegant older woman toward the sealed doors.
"We pay your salaries! Move aside right this instant! How dare you keep the matriarch of this family waiting outside like some commoner?" Linda shrieked, aggressively demanding entry from a stone-faced security guard.
Sophia maintained a calm, graceful demeanor in her simple white dress. Her quiet grace contrasted sharply with Linda's tense, demanding posture.
Before the guards could formulate a response to the shouting, the air directly behind Linda turned unnaturally cold and dense.
Linda spun around. She withered instantly beneath Julian's fatal, unblinking stare. The dark blanket draped over his lap and his necessity for a wheelchair did nothing to diminish the terrifying aura radiating from him.
"J-Julian," Linda stammered in sheer terror, her voice cracking.
"What did you just call me?" Julian asked, holding her gaze with a sharp, predatory look that turned her legs to jelly.
Linda snapped her mouth shut, trembling so hard her expensive jewelry rattled against her collarbone.
With Leo already safely ushered inside through a secure side entrance away from the cameras, Elara remained behind Julian's chair, observing the unfolding disaster.
"Bring them all over here," Julian ordered, shifting his attention to the flashing bulbs.
The guards obliged, herding the terrified reporters directly in front of the wheelchair. The press corps fell dead silent, realizing exactly whose wrath they had provoked. They stood trembling, clutching their recording equipment, fully aware their tabloid jobs were not worth their lives.
Julian sat quietly in the sterile hospital corridor. His left hand moved. He used his long fingers to methodically spin the dark prayer beads wrapped around his right wrist. The steady, measured clack of the wooden beads echoed in the silent hall. Every staff member and guard recognized that rhythmic sound; it was the only thing keeping his darker, murderous impulses at bay.
The beads spun faster and faster, the plastic clicking in a frenzied cadence as the psychological pressure mounted.
Elara stepped around the side of the wheelchair and did the unthinkable. She reached out and rested her cool, delicate hand directly over his knuckles, physically stilling his frantic movements, trapping the beads beneath her palm.
The entire room collectively gasped in horror. Linda covered her mouth, bracing for the inevitable violence. The reporters squeezed their eyes shut, anticipating severe retaliation for anyone daring to touch him without permission.
Instead, the lethal, suffocating tension dissolving around Julian was undeniable. His shoulders dropped a fraction of an inch.
"Let go," Julian instructed quietly, his voice totally devoid of the expected rage.
Elara complied instantly with a casual shrug, lifting her palm away and stepping back to her position behind his chair.
"There is only one matriarch in the Blackwood family, and she is currently fighting for her life behind those doors. Let that be clear in your accounts," Julian mandated with unyielding authority, turning his cold attention back to the frantic press.
He gave a sharp nod.
Toby stepped forward. The massive bodyguard drove his heavy steel-toed boots down on the expensive cameras scattered around the reporters' feet. Glass shattered. Expensive lenses crunched into dust under his relentless stomping.
The terrified reporters scrambled backward, fleeing into the night without a single complaint about their destroyed gear, grateful merely to escape the hospital grounds alive.
Sophia stepped forward with a warm smile, her posture remaining perfectly elegant. "Julian, it is a relief to see you here..."
"Excuse us," Elara bluntly cut her off.
She stepped behind Julian and took firm charge of the wheelchair handles. With a deliberate push, she purposefully steered the heavy chair straight toward Linda's position, carving a path far too close to the shrinking woman.
"Watch it!" Linda shrieked in genuine fear, leaping backward to protect her feet. Her brand-new, limited-edition heels clattered against the tile. She clutched her chest, breathing heavily, horrified at the near-miss to her expensive accessories.
Elara paused the chair and fixed Linda with a dry, unimpressed look.
"Very touching dedication. I see you wore your best designer shoes to visit a dying relative," Elara mocked, her tone dripping with quiet disdain.
Linda flushed a deep, humiliating crimson. She whipped her head toward her mother for support. "Sophia! Did you hear what she..."
"Aren't you a bit too old to be calling for an elder to fight your battles?" Elara struck verbally again, her sharp question cutting through the lobby.
Linda gaped, her jaw dropping at the raw audacity.
Elara gripped the handles tighter and gave the wheelchair a gentle push. She rolled Julian straight past the stunned women, moving smoothly toward the private elevators without sparing them a single backward glance.
The polished steel doors of the hospital elevator slid shut, sealing Elara, Julian, and Toby in quiet solitude. The car ascended smoothly toward the VIP medical floor, the mechanical hum providing the only background noise.
Julian watched the floor numbers tick upward on the digital display. When he finally broke the silence, his voice was low and dangerous.
"You had no right to speak on my behalf out there."
Elara did not shrink away from the threat. She stepped around the back of his chair and moved into his direct line of sight. She leaned down, resting her hands boldly on the leather armrests, boxing him in the seat. She met his cold, predatory stare without a single flinch.
"A simple 'thank you' would be much more appropriate," Elara confidently retorted.
Julian sat still, staring into her defiant eyes. The close proximity allowed her to see the surprising length of his dark lashes and the bruised shadows underneath, highlighting the physical toll of his endless, chronic pain. Neither of them broke contact. The intense psychological intimidation rolled off him, but Elara stood her ground, refusing to bow to his command.
Toby crammed himself backward, cowering in the far corner of the metal box, desperately trying to merge with the wall and disappear from the terrifying crossfire.
The elevator doors opened with a quiet chime, leaving Elara and Julian locked in a bold stare-down.
