The Grand Arrival

Caleb handed her a fresh glass of sparkling water. His voice dropped to a much more intimate tone. "You do not like such occasions, do you?"

Valerie accepted the crystal tumbler with practiced grace. Her polite smile had not slipped once during the endless sea of introductions. Surrounded by calculated praise regarding her status as the lead designer for the NEX Group, she handled the overwhelming attention flawlessly. Yet, behind her bright eyes, Caleb had noticed the formulaic weariness settling over her features.

She took a slow sip of the sparkling water and offered a slight smirk. "It is hard to say whether I like it or not. It is just necessary for work."

"You, however, are quite comfortable with this banquet. You seem to be enjoying this kind of grand occasion very much," Valerie added, studying the man beside her.

Initially, she had dismissed Caleb as just another frivolous hedonist. He carried himself with the unruly swagger typical of young heirs who had never worked a day in their lives. However, watching his interactions with the industry veterans earlier had overturned her harsh first impression. His opinions during those brief chats had been precise, drawing genuine respect from the seasoned tycoons. He possessed a hidden depth she had not expected.

Before Caleb could respond with another charming quip, a breathless waiter stepped up to their tight circle.

The young man bowed his head in a display of flawless etiquette. "Mr. Lancaster, the auctioneer urgently needs a moment with you before the main charity event begins. Would you like to say a few words up there first?"

Valerie saw the apologetic look crossing Caleb's handsome face. "It is okay. Go ahead," she urged lightly.

In truth, she felt a profound wave of relief. The waiter's interruption felt like a fortunate stroke of luck. It granted her a desperately needed moment to breathe without the suffocating weight of a dozen calculating stares.

Caleb set his glass onto the waiter’s passing silver tray. He turned and gestured toward the surrounding staff. "Take Ms. Chloe to the VIP seating area. She is my honored guest, so see to it that she is cared for."

"Yes, sir," the waiter responded, motioning politely toward the grand aisles.

"Chloe, I will excuse myself for just a moment," Caleb said, flashing her an apologetic smile before turning to navigate his way toward the sprawling stage.

Finally left alone for a fleeting minute, Valerie retreated from the glittering epicenter of the hall. She slipped into a shadowed corner near the sprawling buffet tables. Silver platters lined the velvet-draped stations, laden with expensive appetizers and fresh fruit. She reached out and selected a plump cherry from the nearest display. Rolling the smooth skin between her fingers, she savored the brief peace of isolation.

That peace shattered in a heartbeat.

A massive commotion rippled outward from the venue's grand entrance. The ambient string music was drowned out by a rising tide of awed murmurs spreading like wildfire through the sophisticated crowd. Valerie noticed the throngs of elegant guests parting like the sea. Everyone craned their necks toward the towering mahogany doors.

"Mr. Kensington is here."

"He actually attended this charity banquet in person? The rumors must be true."

"Mrs. Agatha Lancaster is the host tonight. Naturally, the reclusive billionaire came out of respect for her."

The plump cherry slipped clumsily from Valerie's trembling fingers. It dropped silently onto the plush carpet and rolled into the shadows.

*Dominic.*

Her heart executed a painful lurch against her ribs. She had known returning to Valdira meant running into him eventually. Their respective business circles overlapped too much to avoid it forever. But she had never expected the collision to happen so soon, with zero warning.

Suffocating memories surged forward like a tidal wave breaking against the frail walls of her composure. The sheer agony her parents had suffered five years ago flashed behind her eyelids. She remembered the freezing brush with death, the icy grip of the winter river, the bitter taste of betrayal, and the total despair of losing everything. Her throat tightened, choking off her breath.

A passing waiter drifted by her hidden corner. Valerie snatched a heavy crystal glass of amber liquor from his tray. She tilted her head back and downed the burning liquid in one desperate gulp. The fire seared down her throat. It settled hot in her stomach, fighting to quell the rising panic threatening to consume her.

Dominic strode into the glittering hall.

He was accompanied by Camilla. His chiseled features were locked in a mask of pure indifference. He emitted an aura so frigid it seemed to lower the temperature of the room. Camilla smiled radiantly beside him, lifting her hand in an eager attempt to link her arm through his. Dominic visibly dodged the gesture, his posture rigid as he maintained his distance.

Despite his subtle physical rejection, the surrounding crowd watched them with envious eyes. The wealthy elites saw exactly what they wanted to see. They saw the untouchable billionaire and his beautiful companion ruling the social hierarchy.

Valerie clutched her empty glass. Blinded by the sudden rush of traumatic memories and the sting of old wounds, she missed the cold distance in his body language. Seeing them walk side by side in the brilliant chandelier light, she offered a bitter smile.

They had always been the golden couple. Everyone in their college days had crowned them the perfect match. They were the president and vice president standing shoulder to shoulder in the sun. Back then, Valerie had played the role of the interloper, foolishly wedging herself into a narrative where she did not belong. If she had never forced her way into his life, Camilla would likely already be his legal wife.

*Why was I so stupid back then?* she thought, the old wounds throbbing with fresh venom. *I actually believed I could capture his frozen heart. What a pathetic fool.*

The bitter realization gnawed at her insides. The alcohol burning in her veins was not enough to numb the agonizing sting of her past mistakes. She reached out blindly. Her fingers grasped for another strong drink from the neighboring table to wash away the ghosts.

Before her skin could brush the crystal, a comforting arm intercepted her wrist.

A warm embrace enveloped her from behind. The magnetic voice of her brother cut directly through her spiraling thoughts.

"My little sister, it is all over. You should start your own life now," Kendrick whispered near her ear.

Valerie froze, then slowly leaned back into the solid presence behind her. She breathed in the familiar scent of his cedarwood cologne. The sensory detail acted as a sudden anchor, dragging her drowning mind back to the surface of reality. A wave of relief washed over her trembling frame.

Kendrick was right.

The suffocating agony of five years ago belonged to a different lifetime. She was no longer the naive girl who begged for scraps of affection from a man made of ice. She had forged a new identity from the ashes of her old self. With a thriving career at the NEX Group, her two beautiful children waiting safely at home, and the unwavering loyalty of her family securely in her grasp, the past held no power over her.

She took a slow, steady breath. The lingering traces of panic dissolved into thin air. They were replaced by a hardened resolve. Let Dominic parade through the ballroom with his chosen partner. Let the elite crowd whisper their praises. None of it mattered anymore. She had built a fortress around her heart, and no ghost from her past was going to tear it down.
