Smitten at First Sight
Valerie stepped out of the warm interior of the Passat, the crisp evening air brushing over her bare shoulders. She smoothed the elegant fabric of her jade-white gown and cast her gaze across the sprawling estate. Amber lights glowed from wrought-iron fixtures, casting a soft, golden hue over manicured hedges, intricate flower beds, and winding stone paths. The sweet scent of blooming night jasmine floated on the breeze.
"It is magnificent. The horticulturalists have done excellent work with these gardens." Valerie mused, her eyes tracking the creative arrangements framing the modern-day stone palace.
A low, rich chuckle drifted down from the grand entrance, interrupting her quiet appreciation. "Kendrick, you are running a little behind schedule."
Caleb Lancaster descended the wide stone steps of the massive oak doors. He wore a tailored dark blue suit that accented his lean, disciplined physique. He moved with the effortless grace of someone who spent hours in a private gym, projecting an aura of wealth and careless charm.
Kendrick shut his car door and offered a faint, easy smile. "I think we arrived right on time."
Caleb shifted his attention to the passenger side, his lips curling into a playful grin. "Fair enough. You win. Wait, is this Octavia? Kendrick, you should have warned me you were bringing a star. I did not even prepare a proper welcome."
Octavia adjusted her clutch and rolled her eyes with a familiar smirk. "Come on, Mr. Lancaster. This is not our first meeting. Let us skip the artificial flattery."
Caleb laughed aloud, the sound echoing across the paved driveway. "Alright, Ms. Quinn. I was just trying to be a good host."
The group shared a collective laugh, the chaotic banter flowing with ease. Then, Caleb turned his head. His roaming gaze swept past the luxury vehicles and landed squarely on Valerie. He froze. The careless amusement vanished from his face, replaced by a sudden, intense fascination. His eyes traced the delicate lines of her jade-white gown and the quiet confidence in her posture.
Without breaking eye contact with Valerie, he marched forward and grabbed Kendrick by the sleeve. Caleb yanked him a few feet away, leaning in close.
"Bro, where did you find such a gorgeous woman? You kept this a secret. How could you selfishly bring two beautiful dates here at once? I am starting to get jealous of you." Caleb whispered fervently.
Kendrick's expression darkened. He shoved Caleb backward, planting a firm punch into his friend's solid chest. "Watch your mouth. That is my sister."
Caleb stumbled back a step, his jaw dropping. He stared at Kendrick with unfiltered disbelief. "Your sister? You have a sister?"
Kendrick dusted off his sleeves and raised an eyebrow. "Yes."
Caleb threw his hands in the air. "How come in all our years of friendship, you never once mentioned you had a beautiful sister?"
"She went abroad before you moved back. The two of you never crossed paths." Kendrick replied, his tone steady.
Caleb ignored all remaining social protocols. He seized Kendrick by the arm once more and dragged his reluctant friend across the driveway straight toward Valerie. A brilliant, crooked smile broke across Caleb's handsome face. He stopped right in front of her, closing the distance with boundary-pushing enthusiasm.
He thrust his hand forward. "Hello, my name is Caleb. I heard that you are Kendrick's sister. I am his best friend in the world. Let us be family!"
Valerie blinked, bewildered by the sudden onslaught of energy from the manor's heir. She stared at his outstretched hand for a brief second before offering a polite, practiced smile. She accepted his handshake, her fingers barely grazing his palm before she pulled away.
"Hello, my name is Valerie. You can also call me Chloe in professional settings." She stated, keeping her voice even and composed.
Octavia stepped up beside her, unable to contain a burst of pride. "Of course she goes by Chloe. She is the Design Director of the NEX Group in Meridia. She just took first prize in the elite international fashion design competition."
Octavia delivered the news with such triumphant volume, one might have thought she won the trophy herself.
Caleb's eyes went wide. The revelation struck him like a physical blow. He stared at the stunning woman standing before him, his mind racing to connect the dots. The internationally renowned designer everyone in their circle had been gossiping about was standing right in his driveway. His initial physical attraction instantly evolved into towering admiration.
"It is you. You are the designer Chloe. What a true honor to meet you." Caleb declared, his voice thick with reverence.
He instantly abandoned his post at the entrance. He forgot about the incoming luxury cars, the valet staff, and the rest of his hosting duties. Turning his back on Kendrick and Octavia, he gestured toward the massive oak doors.
"Please, allow me to show you inside." Caleb offered, treating Valerie as his unquestionable guest of honor.
Kendrick and Octavia exchanged a bewildered glance as Caleb led Valerie up the grand stone steps, leaving them in the dust. The opulent main hall awaited them, glowing with crystal chandeliers and overflowing with the city's elite figures. Waiters weaved through the crowd carrying trays of vintage champagne, while soft classical music played over the low hum of wealthy networking.
Valerie walked beside Caleb, feeling the weight of his unbroken attentiveness. He guided her through the entrance, offering a steady stream of heavy compliments regarding her recent award and her exquisite appearance. The sheer intensity of his focus felt overwhelming. She needed to establish a boundary before the night slipped out of her control.
Valerie paused near a towering floral arrangement and turned to face him. "Mr. Lancaster, you are being far too polite. We can drop the stiff formalities. Let us just keep things casual."
Caleb did not miss a beat. He threw his head back and let out a booming laugh, unfazed by her subtle attempt to create distance.
"Chloe, since you want it to be casual, do not call me Mr. Lancaster anymore. Just call me Caleb. I would be thrilled to hear you say it." Caleb replied, his charming smile returning in full force.
Valerie suppressed a sigh. His rapid familiarity and eager demeanor bordered on inappropriate for a first meeting. However, her grueling years surviving the cutthroat fashion industry abroad had taught her a great deal about human behavior. She knew how to manage aggressive personalities without burning bridges.
She maintained a flawless, polite smile. "Alright, Caleb."
She accepted his suggestion, yet her tone remained cool and professional, keeping an invisible wall firmly intact between them. Caleb did not seem to notice, or perhaps he simply did not care. He grabbed two crystal flutes of champagne from a passing silver tray, handed one to Valerie, and gestured toward the glittering crowd.
"Come on. There are some people you need to meet." Caleb said, his chest puffed with pride as he guided her deeper into the party.
He acted as her personal herald, carving a path through the dense sea of tailored suits and designer gowns. Caleb introduced her to a succession of prominent figures—real estate developers, tech investors, and seasoned fashion tycoons. Every time he proudly dropped her title, the reaction was identical.
The NEX Group was a massive conglomerate. In the corporate landscape of Valdira, their power and influence were matched only by the formidable Kensington Group. Hearing that the young, elegant woman standing before them was the coveted Design Director of the NEX Group sent a ripple of shock through the gathered guests.
Men in sharp tuxedos and women dripping in diamonds crowded around her. They raised their crystal champagne flutes, their eyes gleaming with calculated interest.
"Ms. Chloe, you are both gorgeous and talented. It is a true pleasure to cross paths with you tonight." An older man with silver hair praised, tipping his glass toward her.
"Indeed. We have only seen your spectacular features in the international news. Having you here in person is an honor." Another executive chimed in, stepping closer to hand over a gold-embossed business card.
"We are desperate to see what NEX Group does next. I am hoping our firms might find a way to collaborate in the near future." A third tycoon added, his voice dripping with eager anticipation.
Valerie held her crystal champagne flute by the stem, her posture radiating elegant grace. She listened to their bids for connection without a single trace of arrogance. She knew exactly how to play this game.
"The NEX Group's branch in Meridia was founded not long ago. We still have a long way to go, and we have much to learn from established leaders like yourselves. I am genuinely looking forward to cooperating with all of you in the future." Valerie responded, her voice steady and melodious.
Her perfect blend of graceful humility and razor-sharp professional confidence struck a chord. The cynical executives of the smaller companies had expected the NEX Group's director to be haughty and dismissive. Instead, her grounded, polite demeanor disarmed them. She engaged them with focused eye contact and thoughtful nods, leaving a stellar, unforgettable impression on the influential crowd. She navigated the shark-infested waters of high-society networking flawlessly, securing immense respect for her brand.
