Scars of Nightshade
The silence in the honors classroom was suffocating. Dozens of eyes remained glued to Maeve's forearm, trying to comprehend the gruesome reality laid bare before them. The thick, angry scars mapping her pale wrist were undeniably not the scandalous, sordid love marks the rest of the room had salivated over just moments ago. They were jagged, brutal remnants of bullet trajectories and deep knife lacerations. Wounds were layered over older wounds, etching old pain and fresh violence into her skin like a twisted tapestry. At the center of this chaos, resting just above her wrist bone, a deep crimson mark bloomed across her flesh, forming the undeniable shape of a rose.
In the criminal and elite underworlds, the most influential figures knew exactly what that rose symbolized. It was the mark of the mercenary queen, Nightshade. Seeing that rose was the equivalent of standing in the presence of the Sovereign of Zenith Sanctum. But to these sheltered, pampered students of Crownpoint University, it was merely an intimidating, terrifying web of mutilated skin.
Caleb and Nolan stood frozen in their tracks, their previous arrogance evaporating into thin air. Their eyes were wide with shock. A dark, disturbing question formed in their minds. How could their sister, a girl who had supposedly spent thirteen years doing nothing but farming in a quiet, remote village, bear such military-grade injuries? Caleb, an expert in firearms, narrowed his gaze. He instinctively traced the unmistakable pucker of an entry wound near her elbow, distinguishing it from the sharp, clean lines of a blade. The dark truth of these bullet marks stirred a sudden, fleeting sense of deep remorse and heavy suspicion within his chest. He realized then that Maeve was hiding a massive, dangerous secret. Farming did not leave bullet holes.
Blaire Winslow felt her grand accusation crumbling around her, deeply embarrassed that her theatrical display had fallen flat. She visibly trembled at the terrifying sight of the crimson, rose-shaped scar network, yet her massive ego refused to back down. She swallowed hard, stretching her neck forward to adopt an aggressive, defensive posture.
"What do you want? Don't think those scars prove anything. For all we know, you might have been trafficked to some war-torn country! Those places are worse than small villages. Maybe you weren't just a prostitute, maybe you were a drug addict too." Blaire stammered, her voice cracking slightly as she tried desperately to regain control of the narrative.
A resounding, explosive slap tore through the dead-silent room like a gunshot.
Moving faster than anyone could comprehend, Maeve struck Blaire directly across the face. The impact was heavy and brutal. It instantly distorted Blaire's cheek, lifting her right off her feet and sending her crashing hard onto the floor.
The surrounding students gasped, scrambling backward to get out of the way. Blaire groaned, holding her rapidly swelling face. She looked up with humiliated, tear-filled eyes, ready to scream.
Maeve slowly stepped over the fallen girl. She stared down at Blaire, her eyes bloodshot and steeped in pure, unadulterated murderous intent. The air in the room froze.
"That's right. I've not only been to war-torn countries. I've killed people. Wanna try your luck?" Maeve's voice cut through the silence like a serrated blade.
The sheer, paralyzing terror of her genuine death threat silenced the room. No one dared to breathe. They saw the strange, cold gleam in her eyes and knew she was not joking. Blaire lay on the ground, mentally and physically paralyzed with fear. A dark puddle slowly formed beneath her designer skirt as she wet herself right in front of her peers.
A foul scent drifted through the air.
"Oh my god, did she just...?" a boy whispered, taking another step back.
"She actually peed her pants from a bluff!" someone snickered, breaking the tension.
Unbothered by the pathetic display on the floor, Maeve calmly turned on her heel. She walked straight to the back of the room and claimed an empty desk near the window, acting as if she had not just threatened a girl's life.
Crownpoint University was the gathering place for the most outstanding youths of Altria. It served as a direct bridge for channeling top-tier talent into Zenith Sanctum. Within the rigid walls of the honors class, every student was required to study business, combat, medicine, racing, programming, fine arts, firearms, chemistry, and social etiquette. To show talent in even one of these areas was impressive. Geniuses like Elise, who excelled in multiple fields, were rare.
Maeve, however, had just returned from a village. The school administration categorized her as a lost cause. Deemed unteachable due to her background, the curriculum and teachers did not even bother to develop a training plan for her. Maeve was perfectly fine with this arrangement. As the lecture began, she laid her head down on the desk, closed her eyes, and spent the time comfortably napping.
Her specific choice of seating, however, sparked a new wave of gleeful, hushed whispers among her terrified but petty classmates.
"Oh my god, Kaelen came to school today," a girl whispered excitedly.
"This is going to be good. That idiot Maeve just happened to choose the seat right next to Kaelen's spot. Everyone knows he has a terrible temper."
"Even Elise isn't allowed to sit next to him. Remember that girl who sat there last term? She got expelled the very next day."
Kaelen Cross was known throughout the city as a notoriously ill-tempered, rebellious super genius. He was a favored prospect of Zenith Sanctum, infamous for ruthlessly kicking out anyone who dared sit beside his sacred space.
The classroom door was suddenly kicked open. Kaelen swaggered inside. He was handsome, sporting messy short hair and a leather jacket casually slung over his shoulders. He carried an unmistakable aura that warned everyone to stay away.
Elise sat up straight in her chair, her cheeks flushing pink. Her heart raced with malicious anticipation. She expected the volatile Kaelen to march to the back, grab Maeve by the hair, and throw her out into the hallway. She watched with bated breath, hoping Maeve would finally get what she deserved.
Kaelen stopped at the back row. He scratched his messy head and glanced down at Maeve, who was fast asleep. He blinked lazily. Without a single word of complaint, he simply slumped into his own chair. He folded his arms on the desk, laid his head down, and fell asleep right beside her.
The class stared in stunned disbelief.
Elise's fists clenched so tightly her knuckles turned white. A pale, venomous fury consumed her chest. She could not understand why Kaelen had spared this arrogant country girl. Maeve had returned from the dead to steal her identity, siphon her family's affection, and now, snatch the very boy she harbored a secret crush on. Elise glared at the back of Maeve's head, cursing her inward, wishing she could erase her from existence.
The fragile peace of the afternoon combat class was shattered an hour later. Vice Principal Bronson Graves kicked the classroom door open. He strode directly to the podium, his expression dark and serious. His right wrist was heavily wrapped in thick white bandages.
He swept the room with a fierce, hateful glare that landed squarely on Maeve's sleeping form.
Elise smiled, her spirits lifting. Bronson had once stated he would never tolerate shameless people like Maeve dirtying Crownpoint's halls. Now, he was here to finish the job.
Bronson slammed his uninjured hand onto the podium to command attention.
"Class, I am here to tell you two things. First, in exactly ten days, every student in the honors class will take my mandatory combat skills test. Anyone who does not meet the passing standard will be permanently expelled from Crownpoint University."
The students instantly understood the assignment. This was a thinly veiled, personal trap aimed directly at Maeve. All the honors students came from wealthy, elite families and had learned self-defense from a young age. Passing a combat test was a piece of cake for them. Maeve, the supposedly untrained country girl who had broken his wrist, was the only one guaranteed to fail. The students exchanged sadistic smirks, chuckling quietly at the obvious revenge plot.
Before the excited whispers could settle into a low hum, Bronson raised a hand, delivering his second, earth-shattering piece of news.
"Second, after much effort from the school, the esteemed Mr. Kael Thorne has officially returned to Altria. He has agreed to come to Crownpoint University to personally teach you marksmanship. You will all take this seriously and study hard."
