Marks of Honor
Blaire scoffed, throwing her head back with a dramatic roll of her eyes.
"Oh wow, she told us to get lost. I am so terrified. You want to attend this class? Well, I am not letting you."
Blaire stepped forward, throwing her weight into a hard shoulder check aimed straight at Maeve's chest. She wanted to knock the new girl down in front of everyone.
Maeve did not even blink. She merely pivoted to the side, letting the momentum carry Blaire past her.
Blaire stumbled hard. Her arms flailed as she scrambled to keep her footing in her designer heels. Wine tasting was her domain, but physical coordination was not her strong suit. A few muffled snickers rippled through the classroom. Humiliation flushed Blaire's cheeks crimson. She spun around, glaring at Maeve with pure venom, ready to scream.
Then, Blaire paused. Her eyes locked onto something right at the edge of Maeve's long, dark sleeve. A faint, reddish mark peeked out just above the wristbone.
Elise rushed forward, grabbing Blaire's arm to steady her.
"Blaire, are you okay?"
Blaire ignored Elise. A smug, victorious smirk stretched across her face, as if she had just dug up a gold mine of dirt. She raised her chin, making sure her voice carried to every corner of the silent room.
"Well, well, Maeve. So this is who you really are."
The surrounding students exchanged confused glances.
Elise tilted her head, playing the part of the innocent bystander perfectly.
"What do you mean by that, Blaire?"
Blaire pointed a manicured finger straight at Maeve's left arm.
"It is a hundred degrees outside today. We are all wearing shorts and tees. But our new girl here is covered up from head to toe in thick fabric. You want to know why? Because she is hiding something. She is covered in hickeys."
The classroom went dead quiet. Then, a collective gasp echoed off the walls. The mere thought of this uneducated, rural girl bringing cheap street behavior into their elite space turned their stomachs. Whispers erupted.
Elise slapped a hand over her mouth, her eyes wide with manufactured shock. She pitched her voice to be the loudest in the room.
"Oh my god. Wait... Maeve, were you a prostitute?"
Elise pretended it was a slip of the tongue, but the damage was done. The accusation hung in the air, toxic and heavy.
Caleb and Nolan did not hesitate to believe it. They already harbored deep disgust for Maeve's icy demeanor and blatant arrogance. If she had shown up acting humble and submissive, they might have tolerated her existence. But strong, defiant women rarely received sympathy from men used to unquestioned obedience. With Elise expertly fanning the flames of the rumor, Caleb stared at his biological sister as if she were a rotting piece of garbage.
Caleb curled his lip in revulsion.
"You disgust me."
Heavy footsteps clicked against the hardwood floor. A woman in a crisp, tailored suit strode through the doorway, her sharp gaze sweeping over the chaotic scene. Nadine Croft, the renowned wine tasting instructor, had arrived. She was one of the top sommeliers in Altria, commanding immense respect within the university walls.
Nadine frowned at the cluster of students blocking the aisle.
"What is going on here? Why don't you let the new girl take her seat?"
Seeing the instructor only fueled Blaire's destructive energy. She wanted Maeve humiliated on an institutional level.
Blaire crossed her arms and sneered.
"Ms. Croft, you probably don't know the background check on this one. Maeve comes from some tiny, rundown village in the middle of nowhere. I heard rumors she used to live on the streets and do questionable things for cash. I just saw a massive hickey on her wrist. We think she might have been for hire. You know, with gross old men, whips, the whole underground scene. She could be carrying diseases. We cannot share a classroom with someone like that."
Blaire took a step closer to Nadine, pressing her advantage.
"If you do not believe me, just ask her to roll up her sleeve. Make her show us the mark."
The elite students erupted into a frenzy, swept up in the mob mentality Blaire had orchestrated.
"Yeah, show us!"
"She probably has something nasty!"
"We cannot study with someone like that! The school needs to expel her right now!"
Nadine hesitated, caught in the crossfire. She did not know the truth about the new girl, but she knew the brutal reality of Crownpoint University. Every student screaming in her classroom came from immense wealth and political power. In the honors class, that influence was multiplied tenfold. She could not afford to offend the heirs of Valerius over one rural transfer student.
Nadine shifted her weight awkwardly and looked at Maeve, attempting to maintain a gentle tone.
"Maeve, I want to believe you are a decent young woman. But given the disruption, maybe you should just show them. Clear up this misunderstanding so we can begin the lecture."
Caleb stepped forward, his towering frame casting a shadow over Maeve. His voice was freezing cold, laced with an unmistakable threat.
"Maeve, you had better think carefully before you refuse. If these rumors turn out to be true, the Vance family name will be dragged through the mud. We will become the laughingstock of Valerius. Roll up your sleeve."
Under the crushing weight of dozens of judgmental eyes and vile accusations, Maeve let out a low scoff. She could feel Elise glaring at her from the center of the crowd, eyes burning with hidden triumph and disdain. When they were children, Elise had executed scheme after scheme to drive Maeve out of the Vance household. Now, she was deploying the exact same psychological warfare, trying to drive her out of Crownpoint University on her very first day.
But thirteen years had passed. Elise was still playing the role of a pampered, manipulative princess. Maeve, however, was no longer the helpless little girl who could be bullied into a corner.
Maeve stood tall, her posture relaxed but radiating dangerous energy. A cold, hollow smile touched the corners of her lips.
"Sure. Since you are all so desperate to see, I will show you. I just hope none of you have nightmares afterward."
The students rolled their eyes, laughing at her inwardly. Nightmares over some cheap hickeys and bruises? They thought she was trying to sound tough to save face. Blaire, Elise, Caleb, Nolan, and even Nadine stared at her, unblinking, waiting for the final nail in her coffin.
Without a single ounce of hesitation, Maeve reached across her body and grabbed the cuff of her thick tracksuit. She yanked the sleeve up to her elbow.
The mocking grins vanished.
The suffocating, chaotic noise of the classroom flatlined into an eerie, heavy silence.
Her pale wrist and forearm were crisscrossed with horrific, jagged scars. Some were faint, silvery lines faded by time. Others were raised, angry, and deep pink. These were not love bites. These were not the bruises of a sadistic lover.
They were cuts. Bullet grazes. Deep lacerations.
Wounds were layered over older wounds, etching old pain and fresh violence into her skin like a brutal, twisted tapestry. In the center of the chaos, resting just above her wrist bone, the scars intersected and healed in a distinct, haunting pattern. A deep crimson mark bloomed across the pale skin, forming the undeniable shape of a rose in full bloom.
It was not ugly. It was hauntingly, terrifyingly beautiful.
The pampered students stared in mute horror. No one in that room could possibly comprehend that Maeve, operating under the codename Nightshade, had walked through literal hell in the world's most brutal, blood-soaked war zones. She did not wear long sleeves out of shame. She wore them because these scars were not meant for the weak eyes of the privileged. They were her medals. They were her legacy.
