Return to the Dumpster

Heavy bass thumped through the floorboards of the vibrant, dimly lit downtown lounge, vibrating deep against Callista’s chest. Neon lights sliced through the smoky air in sharp arcs of pink and blue, casting erratic, colorful shadows over the packed dance floor. Later that evening, she had met her fiercely loyal best friend, Isadora. Callista was finally shedding the restrictive, suffocating rules imposed by her soon-to-be ex-husband, Dominic. For the past three years, Dominic had dictated her every waking move, keeping her locked away in his sprawling mansion like a shameful secret. He hated her going out, hated her being seen, and demanded she wait for him in the shadows. Tonight, surrounded by the dizzying energy of the city, she was done playing the obedient, invisible wife.

Isadora leaned across their small cocktail table, shouting to make herself heard over the pulsing rhythm of the music. "Hope you have not been waiting long! So, what is the special occasion tonight? Did you finally get a night off from your sweetheart?"

Callista took a slow sip of her drink. The icy liquid burned a steady, grounding trail down her throat, giving her the fortification she needed. "I am getting a divorce."

Isadora’s eyes widened, her jaw dropping. She set her glass down on the sticky table with a loud thud, ignoring the spilled amber liquor pooling around the base. "Let me guess. This drastic decision is because his infamous old flame, Bianca, returned to town, isn't it?"

Callista shook her head, staring blankly at the cold condensation dripping down the glass in her hand. The harsh image of Dominic standing in a warm kitchen, cooking a late-night meal for another woman, flashed in her mind. "It is not just about Bianca. It is the realization that three agonizing years of my devotion, endless patience, and constant sacrifices meant nothing to the man I loved. I poured my heart out for a man who never cared to look my way. The marriage has been dead for years. I am just finally burying it."

Isadora reached across the table and squeezed Callista's hand. A protective glint shone in her dark eyes. "You should have woken up to this a long time ago. I watched you lose yourself in a hollow relationship, and it killed me to see you throw everything away. He never deserved you, Callista."

Callista offered a weary, genuine smile. "Better late than never."

"Damn right it is," Isadora declared. She stood up and grabbed Callista’s hand, pulling her toward the VIP section. "Tonight, I am getting us the best male models in town. You deserve some real attention for once."

The two women navigated the glittering, crowded club. They pushed past throngs of sweating, dancing bodies, leaving the chaotic main floor behind for the quieter, exclusive corridors. The heavy bass muffled as they walked past a row of opulent private rooms. Suddenly, a booming burst of cruel laughter spilled from a slightly ajar door. The familiar voices cut through the ambient noise and caught Callista’s ear, making her freeze in her tracks.

It was Dominic’s oldest and closest circle of friends.

"Got to hand it to Dominic," a male voice sneered through the narrow crack in the heavy door. "The minute Bianca returned, he moved her right in. Word is, he already showed his boring wife the door without a second thought."

"Well, she had it coming," another voice chimed in, the tone dripping with casual disdain. "Play the pathetic simp, and you lose it all. Seriously though, remember that night in the booth with all the blood? I thought a tragedy had occurred. Turned out it was just her period."

"Are you still thinking about that?" someone mocked. "Man, have you had a thing for Callista all along?"

"Who would pine after some nobody from a backwater town anyway?" a third man laughed out loud, the sound echoing down the corridor. "She has no background, no status, no money. Only Dominic, with his unique preferences, would stick around for three years."

"Guess the novelty wore off. Time for a change. He replaced her without breaking a sweat."

Standing frozen in the gloomy hallway, Callista felt a cold stillness settle behind her eyes. The puzzle pieces clicked into place. These were the exact men who had feigned respect for her to her face, calling her Mrs. Ashford at formal dinners, only to mock her existence behind closed doors. They stripped away any shred of human dignity she had in their eyes, laughing at her past tragedies and her lowly origins.

A surge of protective anger radiated from Isadora. Her hands balled into tight fists, her nails biting into her palms. She stepped toward the heavy oak door, ready to storm the room and tear the arrogant men apart.

Callista reached out, holding her furious friend back. "This is my battle to fight." Her voice was calm and unyielding, devoid of any past hesitation.

Pushing the heavy door open, Callista glided into the luxurious room under the shocked stares of the men. She settled onto the center of their plush leather sofa and crossed her long legs, offering them a chilling, predatory smile.

"If you are all sitting around talking about unique preferences, I top him," Callista declared. Her voice was light but dripping with lethal venom. "I gladly recycled what Bianca threw away three years ago. But looking at the situation now, it seems like I did everyone in this room a massive favor by returning the trash back to the dumpster where it belongs."

A suffocating silence swept the lavish room. The men exchanged panicked glances, their arrogant smirks melting into sheer terror.

Turning her head, Callista realized exactly why their bravado had vanished into thin air. Dominic and Bianca were standing frozen right behind her. They had just entered the room, catching every single word of her insult.

Unfazed by the dramatic entrance of her husband and his mistress, Callista slowly stood up. She smoothed the front of her dress and met Dominic’s cold stare with a defiant shrug. "Look what the cat dragged in. My trash husband."

Bianca weaponized her tears. She stepped close to Dominic and clung to his muscular arm, her eyes glistening under the dim chandelier. "Callista, please, do not say things like that. We are all just friends here. You are overreacting over nothing."

Callista merely sneered at the manufactured display.

Terrified of Dominic’s impending wrath, his friends scrambled to do damage control. They exposed the phony respect they had feigned for her over the past three years.

"Come on, Callista," one of them urged, taking a nervous step forward, raising his hands in a placating gesture. "Just swallow your pride and apologize to Dominic. You know he will forgive you if you just drop this attitude. It was just a joke."

They viewed her as a disposable fool who would crawl back on her knees at the slightest crumb of his affection.

Dominic stepped forward, his expression darkening. The ambient temperature in the room seemed to drop. He reached his large hand out to grab her arm and silence her insolence.

Callista shifted her weight, dodging his firm grip with effortless ease. His hand grasped empty air, lingering for a fraction of a second before falling back to his side.

She turned her icy gaze back to Bianca, cutting off the other woman's defensive excuses. "There is no need for the waterworks. Let's skip the emotional act. It is boring."

Bianca’s pristine face burned a deep red with sudden fury. She stared in shock at the unyielding spine in the meek woman she had long considered disposable. Callista used to shrink into silence whenever Dominic was near.

His jaw tight with immense displeasure, Dominic grabbed Callista's delicate wrist. He clamped down with punishing force, intending to drag her out of the club and end the public humiliation right then and there.

In an instant, driven by three long years of suppressed rage and neglect, Callista raised her free hand. She channeled every ounce of her frustration and delivered a sharp, stinging slap straight across Dominic's handsome cheek.

*Crack.*

The vicious sound echoed through the private room like a gunshot. Dead silence fell heavily over the entire space. Every single person in the room stopped breathing, staring in pure shock.

Dominic’s head snapped to the side from the sheer force of the blow. A stark red mark bloomed against his pale skin. His jaw clenched tightly. A muscle ticked in his cheek, promising dark retribution.

Without a single moment of hesitation, Dominic lunged forward. He wrapped his powerful arms around her waist, lifting her off her feet, and hoisted her bodily onto his broad shoulder like a sack of grain.

"Dominic..." Bianca pleaded softly, reaching a trembling hand toward him. Her heart clenched in genuine panic as she realized the man she wanted was choosing to leave the club with his wife rather than stay and comfort her.

"I am taking her home," Dominic replied flatly to the room. He did not spare Bianca a single second glance, leaving a seething, humiliated Bianca behind with the stunned group of friends.

Callista unleashed furious physical protests. Her fists beat mercilessly against his solid back. Isadora shouted bewildered curses, trailing frantically after them. Dominic ignored them both. He carried his struggling wife straight out of the exclusive club, ignoring the shocked whispers of the glittering crowd, and marched down the concrete stairs into the echoing basement parking garage.

He reached his sleek black Bentley, pulled the heavy door open, and tossed her into the back seat. Callista tumbled awkwardly against the premium leather upholstery.

Dizzy, disoriented, and nauseous from being hung upside down, Callista struggled upright. Her vision spun. A vicious curse burned hot on her lips, ready to be screamed at the man standing outside the car door.

But the angry words died instantly in her throat.

Just a few feet away across the dim garage, the tinted black window of a massive, parked Maybach was slowly rolling down with a quiet hum.

The descending glass revealed the sharp, forbidding profile of an imposing man. He sat shrouded in the shadows of the luxurious interior, radiating the chilling stillness of an iceberg.

Sensing her frantic gaze, the powerful stranger turned his head. Their eyes locked in the gloomy light of the parking garage. The sheer weight of his intense attention sent a sudden jolt of vulnerability straight through her veins, freezing the breath in her lungs.

Without a word, Callista averted her gaze. She shrank back against the leather seat, hiding her burning, humiliated face behind a thick veil of tangled hair.
