A Clean Break
A bitter, humorless smile touched the corners of Callista's bruised lips. Dominic’s cold, authoritative command had just pierced straight through the tense air of the grand living room, striking her chest with the force of a physical blow. He remained kneeling on the polished hardwood floor, looking up at her with eyes devoid of any warmth. He gently cradled a sobbing Bianca against his broad chest, shielding the other woman as if Callista were some kind of monster. His jaw was locked tight with raw anger as he forcefully demanded that his wife apologize to the very woman who had maliciously provoked her.
The sheer, staggering injustice of the situation washed over Callista. It prompted her to grip the simple, weathered wooden bracelet tightly in her palm. The rough, uneven beads dug sharply into her delicate skin, grounding her in the present reality. She looked down at the husband she had served and loved for three years, feeling a strange numbness begin to replace her pain.
"What for?" She asked the question with flat, unyielding defiance, firmly refusing to bow her head or entertain his ridiculous demand.
Hearing her refusal, Bianca instantly amplified her theatrical performance. She buried her face deeper into the crisp fabric of Dominic's shirt, letting out soft, pathetic whimpers. She feigned extreme, trembling vulnerability, making her slender shoulders shake in a masterful display of manufactured trauma. The display worked perfectly. Dominic’s protective rage boiled over at the sight of the frail woman trembling in his arms. He shot a vicious, unforgiving sneer up at Callista, treating his own wife with absolute disgust. His deep voice dripped with heavy aristocratic condescension, designed to cut her down to size.
"Since when have you ever owned anything of your own? I have personally paid for every single stitch of clothing you wear on your back."
The cruel, degrading words struck Callista like a violent slap to the face. The message was unmistakable. He meant to strip her of all dignity, brutally reminding her of her supposed financial dependence to put her in her place in front of his true love. He knew she earned her own living, yet he weaponized his wealth to humiliate her.
Callista refused to shatter under his icy gaze. She raised her hand, displaying the rough string of prayer beads that she had bled for on the freezing stone steps.
"This bracelet came from Haven Abbey. You didn't pay a single cent for it." Her voice trembled slightly with suppressed emotion, but she kept her chin held high.
She refused to let him demean the spiritual value of her sacrifice. She refused to let him claim ownership over the agonizing hours she had spent praying for his health, nor would she let him use this sacred item as another weapon against her. Callista wrapped her slender fingers tightly around the woven cord. With a sharp, sudden jerk, she snapped the heavy string.
The sudden, sharp crack of the cord breaking echoed loudly in the silent room. The polished wooden beads instantly broke free, skittering wildly across the expensive floor. They bounced away into the dark corners of the grand room, clicking and clattering against the baseboards, physically scattering the remnants of her blind devotion.
"I want a divorce. Let's just end this completely." She declared the words into the stunned silence, her voice dropping to an eerie, resolute calmness that surprised even herself.
Dominic scoffed loudly, breaking the heavy tension. His handsome face twisted with absolute disbelief and lingering arrogance. He was entirely convinced this was merely another pathetic, escalating ploy for his attention. In his eyes, she was a woman who loved him far too much to ever truly walk away from his wealth, his status, and the luxurious life he provided. He fully expected her to eagerly accept his magnanimous olive branch and return to her submissive, obedient role once she calmed down.
"Go into the kitchen and make us something hot to eat. We can just forget this unpleasantness ever happened." He lazily issued the order, completely dismissing her profound pain and craving the simple, hearty food only she could prepare.
Callista stared at the sheer audacity of the man standing before her.
"You can go eat your ass." Her voice rang with absolute finality.
Without waiting for his explosive reaction, she turned on her heel. She walked straight out the heavy front doors without a single backward glance, leaving the suffocating atmosphere of the grand house behind her. She marched down the driveway, climbed into her own car, and sped away from the sprawling grounds of Obsidian Estate. As she gripped the steering wheel, her phone buzzed relentlessly on the passenger seat. Dominic's name flashed across the screen over and over. Callista reached over, snatched up the device, and definitively blocked his calling number for good, cutting off his access to her life completely.
She drove aimlessly through the city streets. A quiet melancholy settled over the dark roads as a sudden, heavy drizzle began to fall. The rain slicked the asphalt, blurring the streetlights into smeared streaks of color. Through the rhythmic, thumping sweep of her windshield wipers, Callista's headlights suddenly caught a frantic scene unfolding ahead. A desperate, middle-aged man in a soaked suit was waving his arms wildly beside a stalled, luxurious black Maybach.
Callista immediately pulled over to the shoulder and rolled down her window. The soaked man rushed to her door, his face pale with panic. He frantically explained that his elderly boss was currently suffering a massive heart attack in the backseat of the sedan. The dispatched ambulance remained hopelessly trapped in gridlocked city traffic miles away. Callista peered through the heavy sheet of rain and saw the elderly man slumped in the back of the Maybach. His lips were already turning a terrifying shade of blue, his chest barely rising.
Pushing all her own personal devastation and lingering hesitation aside, Callista immediately sprang into action. She killed the engine and stepped out into the blinding, heavy storm, the freezing rain instantly soaking through her clothes. Together with the panicked driver, she helped transfer the heavy, unconscious old man out of the luxury vehicle and into the backseat of her unassuming car.
Slamming the doors shut, Callista jumped back behind the wheel. She recklessly rushed them through the heavy downpour. She gripped the steering wheel tightly, navigating the treacherous, water-logged streets with singular focus. She ran through red lights, blasting her horn to clear the intersections, racing against the ticking clock to reach the nearest hospital emergency room. The middle-aged man in the back coordinated with the medical staff over his phone, his voice shaking with terror.
They arrived at the hospital in a chaotic blur of motion. The emergency medical team stood waiting under the glaring lights of the ambulance bay. They swiftly whisked the dying man inside on a rolling stretcher, shouting medical terms as they disappeared through the sliding doors.
Callista stayed behind in the quiet aftermath to catch her breath. The adrenaline slowly faded from her veins, leaving her exhausted and trembling. Cleaning up the messy backseat of her car, she found the old man's lone, expensive leather shoe left abandoned on the floorboard. She picked it up, feeling the premium leather beneath her cold fingers. She carried it inside the brightly lit hospital lobby and dutifully logged it at the reception desk so it could be returned to the family once the chaos settled.
Still soaked to the bone and shivering violently from the rain, Callista turned to leave the sterile environment. As she walked toward the exit, she accidentally brushed past a rushing group of men in dark, tailored suits. They moved with immense purpose, parting the crowd around them. They were led by a towering, imposing man. His intense, commanding gaze swept over the lobby and landed on her. The sheer weight of his attention felt like a heavy physical pressure pressing directly against her skin, making her breath catch in her throat.
Callista immediately averted her eyes from his sharp, terrifyingly focused frown. She quickly lowered her head, ignoring the strange jolt in her chest, and hurried out through the automatic sliding glass doors into the cold, rainy night.
She retreated to the cold, damp sanctuary of her car. She sat in the driver's seat, completely chilled in her wet clothes, the cold seeping into her very bones. Water dripped from her hair onto her shoulders. Suddenly, the bright screen of her phone lit up in the dark cabin with a notification chime. It was a new post from Bianca’s social media account.
Callista tapped the notification. The screen displayed a beautifully plated soft-boiled egg, perfectly cooked and decorated with a ketchup heart. The caption flaunted the meal with the words, "Made with love." Attached to the post was a candid photo. It showed the broad, familiar back of a tall man wearing a kitchen apron. He stood diligently at the stove, tending to a pan in the warm light of the kitchen.
It was Dominic.
Callista stared at the glowing screen, the harsh reality washing over her. For the past three long years, this exact man had acted as if pouring his own wife a simple glass of water was a massive, exhausting concession. He claimed to be too busy, too tired, too important for mundane domestic tasks. Yet here he was, willingly and eagerly cooking late-night comfort food for another woman, playing the role of a devoted partner without a second thought.
Callista sat alone in the dark cabin. She listened to the relentless rain hammer against her windshield, creating a deafening drumbeat that drowned out the rest of the world. Staring at the photo of Dominic cooking for another woman, a single, undeniable, and decisive thought crystallized perfectly in her mind. The last invisible chain holding her to the past snapped. This marriage was irrevocably over.
