Covering the Tracks
"I planted a tracker on him, of course!" Ronan grinned over the rim of his ceramic mug, swinging his legs off the high stool.
Seraphine sat comfortably beside her son on the plush sofa. Her hand paused mid-air, abandoning the gentle stroking of his fluffy, damp hair. Her expression rapidly grew severe, tightening with sharp focus.
"Give me your phone. Now."
She snatched the encrypted burner phone from his small hands the moment he pulled it from his pocket. Her nimble fingers flew across the digital keyboard. She bypassed the standard security interface and typed a complex series of override codes. The screen flashed green as she cut off the signal of the tiny tracker he had planted. With a few more swift keystrokes, she reprogrammed its destination coordinates, masking their true location.
"The counterattack to save me is one thing, Ronan. What concerns me right now is that Vanguard tech teams are ruthless. They will track the digital traces you leave behind. Tell me exactly what would happen if Kaelen turns around, checks the cameras, and finds both you and his prized son, Cassian Vanguard, standing together in the same room?" She delivered the question with a firm, serious tone, ensuring he understood the gravity of his stunt.
"I'll be exposed! You're a genius, Mom! But wait, you seem to have connected the tracker's ping elsewhere. Who exactly did you target?" Ronan leaned over her arm, his eyes wide with admiration for her hacking skills.
Seraphine merely twitched. She reached out, attempting to physically grab the collar of his shirt.
"None of your business. I am arranging a stealth chopper to send you back to safety first thing in the morning. Go upstairs and sleep."
Ronan deftly dodged her grasping hand. He pushed off the cushion and hopped onto the heavy oak coffee table.
"No way! I haven't even given the bastard a hard time yet. I won't leave! I'm staying right here to fight alongside you, Mom!"
He leaped off the table and ran rapid circles around the heavy couch, keeping himself just out of her reach.
"Think about the tactics, Mom! If Kaelen discovers his precious child is missing right now, in the middle of a storm, he will undoubtedly come straight after you again with an army. That will inevitably affect my hospitalized little brother's sensitive recovery. You need me to keep up the act!"
Seraphine stopped chasing him. She stood by the armrest, acknowledging the undeniable tactical truth in his childish logic. A direct confrontation with Kaelen tonight would ruin years of careful planning. She sighed heavily, rubbing her temples.
"Fine. I will allow you to stay undercover for just a few more days. Keep your head down."
"I knew you would see it my way! So, do you have a secure, fast way back to the Vanguard estate before my father returns to an empty bed?" Ronan asked cheekily, halting his sprint.

Kaelen’s armored vehicle crawled painstakingly through a blinding downpour on the slick highway. The heavy rain battered the reinforced glass, turning the outside world into a blurry, grey smear.
A faint, high-pitched beeping shattered the sullen, oppressive silence inside the cabin.
Declan immediately stomped on the brakes, halting the car on the shoulder of the road. His face drained of color as he turned around from the driver's seat.
"Sir, I checked the interior for bugs before we left the estate. I swear the sweep came up clean!" Declan frantically stammered, terrified of the punishment that awaited such a massive security failure.
Kaelen wordlessly leaned forward. His sharp gaze scanned the dark interior before his hand slipped under the floor mats. He dug out a flashing, coin-sized stealth tracker from deep beneath the rubber lining. The red light pulsed rhythmically in the dim cabin.
Unfazed by his assistant's horror and endless apologies, Kaelen calmly booted up a secure laptop resting on the seat next to him. He engaged the Vanguard family's massive, state-of-the-art data analysis system. The screen illuminated his sharp, stoic features in a pale blue glow.
He synchronized the tracker's frequency with the laptop. Within minutes, a map materialized on the screen. The hacked signal's new, falsified source appeared blinking on the digital grid.
The Hawthorne family residence.
Kaelen frowned deeply. His eyes narrowed at the flashing red dot. He doubted the cowardly Hawthorne family had the sheer audacity or the technological capability to bug his personal vehicle. Arthur Hawthorne was a spineless man, and Giselle was too focused on her image to pull off a sophisticated cyber-espionage stunt. Something did not add up.
The car fell back into an eerie, contemplative silence, save for the rhythmic thumping of the wipers against the windshield. Then, his secure phone rang loudly.
Kaelen answered, bringing the device to his ear.
"Sir, young Cassian is missing! He's gone from his room again!" the head housekeeper gasped in panic over the line. "The perimeter surveillance hasn't been breached in any way. The alarms did not trigger. He just vanished!"
Kaelen’s expression instantly sank with a heavy, cold dread. The air in the vehicle seemed to freeze. He wondered if the boy had somehow been taken again from the inside, bypassing all their upgraded security protocols. His grip tightened around the small, pulsing device in his palm.
He ruthlessly crushed the small tracker in his powerful grip. The hard plastic snapped sharply, digging into his skin before shattering into jagged pieces. He tossed the broken remnants onto the floorboard.
"Find him immediately! Tear the estate apart if you have to!" Kaelen roared into the receiver.

Elsewhere across the city, at the opulent Hawthorne residence, Giselle paced across the imported marble floors.
She seethed with anger, refusing to let a fat pig like Evander Nash ever step all over her dignity again. Her hands balled into tight fists, nails biting into her palms. Her immediate, critical priority was successfully securing a staggering four hundred million dollars by dawn to clean up the mess and fund her next move.
Arthur Hawthorne nearly fainted at the sheer mention of the sum. He collapsed heavily onto the tufted velvet couch, his face turning a sickly shade of grey.
Vivienne rushed forward, offering her husband frantic help. She patted his chest and shouted for the maids to bring a glass of water.
"What did you just say? Four hundred million? Why on earth do you need four hundred million in cash, Giselle?" Arthur demanded, clutching his chest as he struggled to catch his breath.
Giselle stopped pacing and faced her parents. She raised her chin, projecting an aura of manic ambition.
"Dad, please don't worry. The four hundred million may seem like far too much now, but tomorrow I will officially have the immense honor as the global ambassador. I will finally marry into the Vanguard family. What is a mere four hundred million dollars after I become a lady of the Vanguard household and have access to billions?"
She spoke with great, overwhelming outward confidence. Her eyes shone with the promise of endless wealth and untouchable status. She painted a picture of unquestionable victory.
Deep down, a gnawing uncertainty plagued her on the inside. She knew her entire future currently hung by a single, fraying thread. The ambassador title was not secure, Kaelen's affection was a mirage, and the debt she owed was very real. If she could not produce the money by morning, the carefully constructed facade of her perfect life would shatter into pieces.
