A Dangerous Charade
Lightning flashed outside the grand windows of the cedar woods villa, casting erratic, jagged shadows across the expansive foyer. The storm raged on, rattling the heavy glass panes with relentless fury. Kaelen stood mere inches away, his towering, imposing figure casting a dark silhouette that seemed to swallow the ambient light in the room. He loomed dangerously over her, exuding an aura of pure, predatory intent.
"Let me ask you one more time. Who exactly are you?"
His voice dropped to a lethal, vibrating baritone. It echoed in the vast space, demanding the undeniable truth and offering zero room for evasion.
Seraphine lazily pursed her glossed lips. She rubbed the bruised skin of her throat, relishing the slight, throbbing sting. The lingering physical pain kept her mind sharp and grounded against his overwhelming, suffocating presence. She met his furious gaze with practiced, cool indifference.
"I am Seraphine Hawthorne, Mr. Vanguard. Did your investigators fail to mention that little detail when they dug into my background? It is just a pity I am not your deceased ex-wife. I imagine that would make things much easier for you tonight."
A silent, terrifying rage burned bright in his dark eyes. He leaned closer. The heat of his anger radiated off his skin, practically singing the air between them.
"You should count your lucky stars you are not that specific woman. I would not allow you to live a single second longer if you were the real Seraphine Hawthorne!"
"Are you just using me to dump your intense frustrations on a convenient substitute? You seem fixated on punishing a ghost. Hate is usually born from something much deeper. Tell me, Mr. Vanguard, did you actually love her?"
Kaelen scoffed aloud. The harsh sound echoed in the quiet room, devoid of any warmth or hesitation.
"Hah, love? That murderous woman doesn't deserve it."
The brutal words struck a sensitive nerve deep within her chest. She had known the ugly truth down in her soul for five long years. Hearing it spoken directly to her face still left a severe, stinging wound. She had spent half a decade in hiding, enduring endless pain and humiliation to rebuild her life from the ashes he left behind. Why did her chest still ache? Was there some pathetic sliver of reluctance left inside her soul?
She quickly steeled her internal resolve. She built an impenetrable wall of ice over her racing heart, sealing the old wounds away. She would never let Giselle—her grandfather's true murderer—go free. She returned to Oakhaven solely for the sake of her child, for bloody vengeance, and to clear her tarnished name. It had nothing to do with earning affection from the ruthless monster standing before her. A man like him was not worth a fraction of her grief. Furthermore, her biological son Cassian Vanguard was nearby. She could not afford any reckless mistakes that might expose her secret.
She gave a dismissive wave of her manicured hand toward the massive front door.
"I am not interested in your family drama, Mr. Vanguard. Please see yourself out of my home. I need to rest."
Instead of leaving, Kaelen advanced with hostility. He backed her up with heavy, deliberate steps until her shoulders hit the cold plaster. His muscular arms boxed her in, planting his hands flat on the wall on either side of her head, trapping her with no avenue for escape.
"You took the cemetery's encrypted surveillance footage. What exactly are you trying to do with it?"
He pressed his interrogation, his eyes burning into hers. The raging storm outside rattled the glass panes, underscoring his fierce accusation. He blamed her for destroying the heavily protected cameras linked directly to his son's kidnapping earlier that day.
Seraphine refused to flinch under his fierce intimidation. She reached up and methodically brushed her slender, cool fingers against his taut jawline.
"Why don't you tell me what you think my grand scheme is, Mr. Vanguard? You harshly suspected me of kidnapping your son based on nothing but your own paranoia. I only copied the footage to definitively prove my own innocence against your baseless accusations. It is a real shame someone destroyed the original files before you could see them. Now you are suspecting me based on a lack of evidence and damaged cameras. I have not even come to demand compensation for your previous false allegations, and here you are breaking into my house to question me again?!"
Kaelen stared at her. He felt furious at her sharp, unapologetic tongue. Her bold defiance and sheer lack of fear grated on his rigid nerves. He reached down and roughly grabbed her slender waist, yanking her flush against his solid chest to assert his dominance and force a confession.
Before he could unleash his wrath, she swiftly pressed her soft palm flat against his lips.
"You really do not know how to treat a lady, do you, Mr. Vanguard? Shouldn't you be the one begging to compensate me for nearly killing me?"
She knew his quirks well. Kaelen despised being touched by any woman other than Giselle. He harbored a deep-seated aversion to physical contact. She intentionally used that knowledge against him to provoke a reaction and regain the upper hand, deliberately seeking to disgust him.
It worked flawlessly.
He wrenched his face away from her hand, his expression twisting in genuine disgust as he released her waist and took a swift step back.
"You are a delusional vixen. Stop trying your cheap tricks to lure me into your bed. I am not interested!"
The icy tension filled the living room. The temperature seemed to drop several degrees in a matter of seconds. Seraphine mentally calculated her next move. She needed to quickly devise a clever way to force him out of the villa before he ordered his men to search the premises and discovered the hidden truth upstairs.
Before she could speak, a ridiculous, obnoxious ringtone suddenly shattered the heavy silence.
"Baby is calling for Papa. Pick up! I'm your cutest baby!"
Kaelen froze in place. He stared down at his vibrating phone in stunned disbelief.
Seraphine burst into loud, merciless laughter. She secretly gave a massive mental thumbs-up to her brilliant son, Ronan. He had crafted that comedic masterpiece just for moments like this, and the timing could not have been more perfect.
"Your ringtone is rather unique, Mr. Vanguard! Truly inspiring!"
Kaelen shot her a dark, warning glare that promised future retribution. He turned his back to her and pressed the answer button on his screen.
"Daddy, it is raining outside. I am scared. Please come back home right now."
A childish, trembling voice filtered through the speaker. Cassian had changed since his traumatic disappearance, becoming slightly more expressive, but the fear in his voice sounded genuine and raw. Deeply worried for his vulnerable son's fragile mental state, Kaelen did not hesitate. He hung up the phone without another word.
He gave Seraphine one last lingering look before vanishing into the pouring rain, his heavily armed men following close behind to secure his departure.
Seraphine let out a massive, long sigh of relief once the heavy wooden doors clicked shut. Her rigid shoulders slumped. The crushing weight of the tense encounter finally lifted from her chest.
She turned toward the sweeping staircase, intending to head upstairs to check on Cassian. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed a tiny, shadowy figure lingering outside her massive French window. The small shadow attempted to pick the complex locking mechanism of the glass door.
Startled, she hurried across the living room and threw open the glass pane.
Ronan stood on the patio, wrapped tightly in a bright yellow, dripping small raincoat, with his oversized school bag slung casually over his shoulders.
"Hey, Mommy!"
He smiled up at her brightly, unfazed by the ferocious weather tearing through the night. He casually fiddled with his coat buttons as he stepped over the threshold into the dry house. He mentally noted that he should invent an invisibility function for this coat next time to avoid getting caught so easily on his stealth missions.
Seraphine felt profoundly relieved to find him perfectly dry and safe beneath the waterproof fabric. She quickly ushered him further inside the warm house and shut the fierce storm out. She led him straight to the kitchen counter and poured some milk into a ceramic mug, placing it in the microwave to heat.
Ronan climbed onto a high stool at the island. He proudly puffed out his chest, swinging his legs back and forth as he recounted his grand adventure.
"I flawlessly tracked and followed the bastard father all the way here in the dark. How about it, Mom? Wasn't my heroic phone call timely? I saved the day!"
"Yes, it was a stroke of genius. I expected nothing less from my brilliant son!"
Seraphine praised him with a warm, maternal smile. She walked over and affectionately ruffled his fluffy, damp hair, enjoying the quiet moment of victory. Then, her expression shifted to one of intense curiosity as a sudden, glaring question formed in her mind.
"You said you followed Kaelen here in the storm. How exactly did you know where he'd be?"
