A Costly Encounter

Audrey stepped out of the lift onto the expansive balcony of the Apex Club. The freezing winter wind bit through her oversized janitor's uniform. She shivered and wrapped her arms around herself. Despite the biting chill, the luxurious outdoor pool area had been transformed into a scene of dazzling, chaotic debauchery. Glamorous men and women dripped in designer brands. Dazzling neon party lights painted the steaming pool water in vivid hues. The guests seemed oblivious to the cold, fueled by top-tier alcohol and the heat of their revelry.

Audrey kept her head bowed low. Her stomach cramped with an intense, hollow hunger from missing her meals. She ignored the dull pain radiating from her injured leg and scanned the messy deck, hoping to finish this grueling shift and escape the bitter wind.

"Hey, cleaner! Get over here and take these empty wine bottles away. And bring us some fresh ones while you are at it." An arrogant voice snapped from a nearby lounge area.

Audrey flinched at the sharp command. She scurried toward a long table piled high with empty red and white wine bottles. The sticky residue of spilled alcohol coated the expensive glass. She picked up a plastic crate and began loading the bottles inside, keeping her gaze fixed firmly on her task so she would not make eye contact with anyone.

Splash.

A heavy volleyball flew out of the heated pool and hit the wet tiles near her feet. Freezing water sprayed aggressively across the deck. Audrey gasped and instinctively jerked back to avoid getting soaked. Her shoulder slammed hard into a solid figure standing right behind her.

"Ow! Watch where you are going, you filthy maid!" a shrill voice shrieked.

Audrey spun around in a panic. A female guest glared at her with pure disgust. The woman was wearing a pristine, incredibly short white designer skirt, and she furiously brushed at a faint water spot on the fabric.

"I am so sorry. I did not mean to bump into you." Audrey flushed a deep crimson. She immediately bowed her head in profound modesty, hoping to defuse the situation quickly.

"A cleaner is crashing our party? You ruined my clothes! Do you have any idea how much this costs?" The woman sneered, stepping closer to crowd Audrey’s space.

The loud, shrill argument cut through the pulsing music. Damian Croft, an infamous young master lounging on a nearby sunbed, turned his head. The bright neon lights illuminated Audrey’s pale, surprisingly attractive profile as she kept her gaze fixed on the floor. Damian raised a predatory eyebrow, his interest piqued by the striking contrast between her beautiful face and the ugly uniform.

"What exactly happened here?" Damian drawled, his voice carrying easily over the chatter.

The female guest instantly dropped her aggressive stance. She feigned extreme pity and victimhood, spinning around to face the wealthy heir with a dramatic pout.

"Mr. Croft, look at this! This clumsy janitor ruined my expensive clothing." She whined, pointing a manicured finger at the skirt.

Damian let a slow, deeply meaningful glance sweep over Audrey’s shivering form. A cruel smirk tugged at the corners of his lips.

"It is only a piece of clothing. You can simply ask the janitor to compensate you for it. Come here, cleaner." Damian commanded, gesturing with his expensive glass.

Despair washed over Audrey. She closed her eyes for a brief second. She knew all too well that she could not afford to replace even a single button on that designer skirt with her meager, penalized income. Keeping her head down, she walked submissively over to his chair.

"I cannot compensate you with money right now. I can meticulously wash the skirt by hand after the party concludes if you allow me." Audrey spoke quietly, staring at the expensive leather shoes on the deck.

Damian’s cunning, malicious eyes curved with dark interest at her direct admission of extreme poverty. He set his drink down on the glass side table.

"Since you cannot reimburse her with money, why not offer up your own uniform as compensation instead?" Damian suggested with a cruel smirk.

The surrounding crowd of elites instantly tuned in to the sadistic spectacle. The casual chatter died down as guests turned their heads to stare, point, and jeer at the trapped cleaner. Audrey turned deathly pale. She had nothing but her thin undergarments beneath the oversized work clothes. The freezing wind whipped around her, but a different kind of terror settled deep in her chest.

"What is the matter? We are letting you trade your rags as compensation, and you still refuse?" Damian pressed on relentlessly, his voice booming over the rising laughter.

"Mr. Croft, I do not think this janitor has the guts. She refuses to take off her uniform." The female guest giggled, crossing her arms over her chest.

"Oh, I have to see this show now. Take your clothes off immediately." Damian ordered.

The pressure was suffocating. Laughter echoed from all sides, trapping her in a circle of mockery. Her frostbitten fingers instinctively flew up to clutch her collar in a desperate bid to protect her last shred of dignity. She shook uncontrollably. The jeering grew louder, demanding her humiliation. Audrey slowly, shakily raised her hand to unbutton the top of her uniform.

A sudden, heavy warmth enveloped her from behind. A sizable, powerful arm wrapped tightly around her trembling shoulder. The undeniable force pulled her back against a hard, familiar chest. Audrey gasped, her hands freezing mid-air.

Dominic Caldwell looked down at the stunned crowd like a proud, wrathful king. His perfect, sharp jawline was set in stone. He arched a dark, intimidating brow at the people lounging around the pool. The laughter died an abrupt death.

"Mr. Croft, when exactly did you become so interested in playing with a nobody like this janitor?" Dominic asked in a voice dripping with lethal danger.

Audrey felt the air leave her lungs. She heard the word 'nobody' fall from his lips. The man she once loved had just explicitly defined her degraded status to the entire party. She lowered her head further, staring blankly at the wet tiles beneath her shoes.

Damian assumed he was untouchable among his wealthy peers. He smirked and leaned back in his chair, remaining unfazed by the sudden shift in the atmosphere.

"Mr. Caldwell, that is a harsh way to put it. We are just a group of people looking to have some harmless fun. There is not much else to play with around here, is there?" Damian replied.

Dominic let out a low, terrifying laugh.

"Looking to have some fun?" Dominic repeated the phrase, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper.

Before the crowd could even comprehend the physical threat, Dominic moved. He lashed out in a blur of sheer motion. He delivered a brutal, devastating kick directly to Damian's chest. The impact launched the wealthy young master flying backward off his chair. Damian crashed into the freezing pool with a massive, heavy splash.

Audrey stood frozen in Dominic's grip, stunned to the core by the sudden violence she had just witnessed.
