Quiet Resolve
Nadine leaned closer, her sharp almond eyes scanning Audrey’s pale face. She searched the younger woman's features, hungry for a flicker of despair or a tearful protest. The cleaning department was a notoriously dirty, backbreaking assignment. It was an exhausting job reserved for desperate, retired older women, not former heiresses.
Audrey remained eerily composed. Her expression stayed flat and deadened in the dim light of the corridor.
"Is there nothing you want to say in your defense?" Nadine probed further, a distinct hint of disappointment slipping into her tone over the lack of drama.
"I do not care what job I hold as long as I receive my wages. Mr. Caldwell already stated that anything I say or desire would be in vain. I see no reason to offend him by struggling against the inevitable." Audrey shook her head, stating the chillingly pragmatic truth in a flat voice.
A deeply pleased smile stretched across Nadine’s bold red lips. She relished the unbroken submission. "Since you have no objections, gather your meager belongings and report down to the cleaning department."
Audrey gave a stiff nod and retreated into the dormitory.
Nadine lingered alone in the shadowy hallway. She pulled her phone from her pocket and dialed a familiar number to report the successful, humiliating transfer.
Dominic sat behind his mahogany desk, reading his corporate documents, when his phone buzzed. He picked it up. "What is the matter?"
"I transferred her to the cleaning department, just as you instructed." Nadine’s voice echoed through the receiver.
Dominic paused, his eyes narrowing at the dense text on the page. "What was her exact response?" he whispered.
"There was no crying and no commotion. She accepted the demotion quite calmly."
Dominic pressed a hand to his forehead, rubbing his sudden, throbbing temples. A surge of irritation tightened his chest. He was infuriated by her stoicism. "Pile massive amounts of additional physical work onto her. Make sure she never stops moving. Since she is the youngest cleaner in the department, she should naturally take on the bulk of the labor."
"Mr. Caldwell, is that not a bit too harsh? She is just a girl, after all." Nadine hesitated, the words slipping out as she silently questioned his extreme demands.
The line went dead silent. Realizing she had overstepped, Nadine quickly pivoted to change the subject. "The Summit Real Estate young master’s birthday party is on the balcony next Monday. Will you be attending?"
"Yes." Dominic gave a curt reply and ended the call.
He tossed the phone aside and stared blankly at his desk. He found himself unable to focus on the important corporate documents spread before him. No crying, no commotion? He questioned the idea repeatedly. He refused to believe that Audrey’s ingrained, formerly proud personality could genuinely change so drastically in just two short years. He resolved to see exactly how long she could keep up this flawless act of submission.
A grueling week later, the harsh reality of her new position fully set in.
Audrey spent the entire afternoon down on her hands and knees in the VIP sector. She scrubbed away spilled wine, dried liquor, and ground-in dirt from a disgustingly messy private room until her fingers went numb. Her permanently damaged leg and stiff back radiated a raw, agonizing exhaustion with every movement. She dragged herself out into the dimly lit hallway, bone-deeply drained, and reached for her plastic water bottle. She just needed a single sip of water to soothe her painfully parched throat.
"Hey! The soap dispensers in the women's bathroom are empty! Refill them right now! Are you waiting for me to do it?"
Audrey flinched at the obnoxious bark of the patrolling supervisor. She ignored his barrage of petty insults and grabbed a heavy box of soap refills. She limped toward the restrooms, wordlessly complying with the harsh demand.
Despite the excruciating pain shooting through her joints, a strange, twisted sense of fulfillment settled in her chest. She wore an ugly, oversized uniform that hid her figure. Hidden away in the bowels of the cleaning department, she no longer worried about looking presentable. She did not have to live in constant fear of being recognized by high-society guests. She was just a faceless shadow.
Audrey finished the heavy lifting in the women’s bathroom. She hoisted her battered cleaning box into her arms and began to walk away, eager to rest her aching limbs.
The obnoxious supervisor stepped right into her path, purposefully intercepting her. "You are done here. Go out onto the freezing outdoor balcony and help out with the massive party."
Audrey frowned. She remembered an important client had reserved the entire balcony for a wild birthday bash tonight. The freezing outdoor air was the last thing she wanted to face.
"It is already half past eight. My shift is legally over, and I have not eaten a single bite of food all day." Audrey respectfully pointed out her situation, holding her ground.
The supervisor’s face turned bright red. "We are short-staffed! If you want to lazily opt out of work, I will formally report your insubordination directly to Miss Nadine!" he snapped, aggressively raising his voice so it echoed down the corridor.
Audrey’s heart skipped a beat. A cold sweat broke out on her neck. She knew that if Nadine received a report, it would go straight to Dominic. That meant far worse torture.
"Please do not tell Miss Nadine. I will go immediately. Do not be angry." Audrey quickly conceded, panicking slightly as she begged him.
"That is more like it. Hurry up and do not dawdle!" The supervisor sneered, barking his final order as he basked in her fear.
