Beyond Capable

The crisp midnight wind swept across the desolate university campus, rattling the bare branches of the oak trees. Valerie pushed open the heavy glass doors of the science laboratory. The metallic click of the lock echoed sharply in the quiet night. She stepped out into the freezing air and rubbed her temples. A grueling stretch of relentless experiments had kept her awake for days, and the physical strain was finally catching up to her. Harsh dark circles painted the delicate skin beneath her eyes. Her lips felt cracked and dry, drained of moisture. Her bones ached with a dull, persistent heaviness. Only her natural, striking bone structure and innate beauty kept her from looking like a walking corpse. She pulled her woolen coat tighter against the chill.

Earlier that day, Arthur had called her phone. He had commanded her to return to the estate the moment she had free time. Initially, she planned to make the drive back after wrapping up her final dataset today. But looking at the pitch-black sky, she knew the hour was far too late.

"I will go back tomorrow morning. I just need a few hours of sleep first," Valerie murmured to herself.

Her boots crunched softly on the gravel path leading toward the main campus gate. She kept her head down, eager to reach her ride.

"Valerie! Wait up a second!" A voice called out from the shadows of the adjacent engineering building.

A senior student from her research advisory group jogged over. His breath plumed in the cold air, and he looked at her with wide eyes.

"Hey, I heard a rumor going around. Are you planning on doing an early pursuit of your Ph.D.?" he asked, panting slightly.

"Yeah, it has already been decided." Valerie stopped under the dim yellow glow of a streetlamp. She kept her posture relaxed, betraying none of the deep exhaustion pulling at her muscles.

The senior student stared in blatant awe. Valerie was a living legend among the academic community. She had obliterated standard timelines, finishing her undergraduate degree in two years and her master's in another two. Now, at merely twenty-three, she was jumping straight into a rigorous doctoral program.

"Who is your supervisor going to be?" he asked.

"Professor Grant." Valerie supplied the name flatly.

The senior's jaw dropped. "Do you mean Professor Felix Grant? The Felix Grant?"

"Yes." Valerie gave a single nod.

"Oh my goodness, that is impressive! The man is a titan in the field of biology. He is respected everywhere. He turns down practically everyone unless they are a once-in-a-generation genius!" The senior shook his head in pure disbelief. It was the ultimate dream for any biology student to study under Grant. He opened his mouth to ask another question, eager to pry into the specifics of her application.

Valerie raised a hand to pause him. She had just spotted a sleek, familiar luxury vehicle idling near the iron gates of the campus entrance.

"Excuse me. Someone is coming to pick me up. I will take my leave now," Valerie said smoothly. She did not wait for his reply, quickening her pace toward the car.

Eleanor stood beside the black car, rubbing her arms against the night chill. She was staring absentmindedly at the sprawling campus. When she saw Valerie approach, a tender smile broke across her face.

Eleanor stepped forward, her eyes scanning her daughter's weary but striking face. "Valerie, I had no idea you were so capable. Your grandfather told me you scored a 1500 on the SAT. And to think you are a graduate student at Alden University! That is wonderful."

Valerie kept her expression neutral. She slipped into the passenger seat without uttering a word.

"Is a score of 1500 really considered capable to them?" Valerie thought dryly as she buckled her seatbelt. The Kensington family possessed immense wealth, yet their information was surprisingly lacking. Her actual score had been a near-perfect 1580 on her very first try. That score alone had instantly secured her a coveted spot at the elite Regal Medical College, long before Alden University even came into the picture. But she saw no reason to correct Eleanor.

The engine purred to life. Eleanor merged the car onto the quiet highway heading back to the estate. The streetlights flickered across the dashboard in a steady rhythm. For a long while, the only sound was the soft hum of the tires against the asphalt.

Eleanor gripped the steering wheel, glancing sideways at her daughter. She cleared her throat, trying to project a supportive tone.

"Valerie, since you haven't been exposed to the etiquette of high society yet, I want to make sure you are comfortable. The upcoming debut banquet can be intimidating. To help you feel at ease, I have arranged for an esteemed etiquette teacher named Diana Caldwell to work with you. She is exceptional and one of the best teachers in this field." Eleanor presented the information carefully, bracing herself for a defensive reaction.

"Thank you." Valerie leaned her head back against the seat, staring straight ahead at the dark road. Her tone was flat. Her facial expression remained unchanged.

Eleanor blinked, her manicured fingers tightening on the wheel. She waited for more. She waited for the blush of acute embarrassment, a stammered excuse about her rough upbringing, or an overeager burst of gratitude for being allowed into their lavish world.

Nothing came. Valerie projected only a calm, unbothered grace. She did not seem humiliated by the implication that she lacked manners, nor did she act excited about the lavish attention. She simply accepted the statement as a matter of schedule.

Eleanor's heart hammered in her chest as the shock set in. For eighteen grueling years, her daughter had been missing in the unforgiving outside world. Eleanor had expected to bring home a girl who was rough around the edges, timid, or harboring deep resentment.

Yet, sitting right next to her in the dim cabin light, Valerie carried an innate elegance. She possessed a tranquil aura that effortlessly rivaled any high-born lady raised in luxury. Her silence was born of profound self-assurance. Eleanor swallowed hard, realizing her basic assumptions about this brilliant young woman were so incorrect.

The sun was high in the sky when Valerie finally woke up in her spacious bedroom at the Kensington estate. She had crashed the moment they arrived the night before, sleeping straight through the morning to catch up on her severe sleep deficit. The dull ache in her bones had faded, leaving her mind sharp and alert. She threw off the silk covers, quickly freshened up in the en-suite bathroom, and made her way down the grand staircase near noon.

The expansive dining room was quiet, bathed in the bright midday light. A row of uniformed servants stood at attention near the long mahogany table. They were professionals, trained to a five-star standard. They did not gossip in the open, nor did they treat her with fake reverence or hidden disdain. They were simply doing their jobs to make a living, indifferent to whether Valerie was the real or fake daughter.

"Miss Valerie, what would you like to have today? We have a sprawling selection of exotic or traditional cuisines prepared." The head butler stepped forward, gesturing to the gleaming silver chafing dishes.

Valerie pulled out a chair and sat down. Her brilliant mind was already shifting away from her university experiments and locking onto her secret corporate work. She had dense literature to review for her confidential consulting role with the Vesta Group's Allure brand. Time was a precious resource she refused to waste on a heavy meal.

"Do you have any sandwiches? Something quick I can take back to my room." Valerie rested her hands on the table.

"I will have the chef prepare that immediately, Miss." The butler bowed and turned toward the kitchen.

Before the swinging doors could close, the sharp clack of heels echoed from the hallway.

Chloe walked into the grand dining room. She carried a silver tray lined with a meticulously plated arrangement of delicate, colorful cakes. Her hair was styled in soft waves, and she wore a pristine pastel dress that highlighted her pure, innocent features. She flashed a bright, practiced smile the moment her eyes landed on Valerie.

Chloe set the heavy tray down on the table, sliding it gently closer to Valerie's empty spot. "Hi, Valerie! You haven't had breakfast yet? Try the dessert I made for you."

Chloe kept her smile glued in place, projecting an aura of sweet, sisterly devotion. Internally, her stomach was tied in knots. She was prepared to endure coldness. She was ready to swallow sharp insults or bear the brunt of a spilled plate. None of her own pride mattered right now. She knew she had to force a reconciliation with Valerie immediately.

Edward Kensington was coming back.

The mere thought of the eldest son returning from overseas sent a cold spike of dread down Chloe's spine. Edward was the ruthless, undisputed successor of the family empire. Arthur had personally groomed him, sharpening him into a corporate weapon who now held the largest shareholding in the family—even more than Richard and Arthur themselves.

For over a decade, Chloe had played the ultimate long game. She had meticulously pleased Eleanor, catered to Richard, and bonded with Bryce. She had molded herself into the perfect, dutiful daughter. But Edward had never bought the act. Despite her endless efforts, she had never managed to win a single drop of his cold favor.

Chloe was not greedy enough to want the main Kensington estate. Her true prize—the reward for years of suppressing her own desires—was Eleanor's massive shareholding in the Ashford family.

However, Eleanor only had the right to receive dividends. To transfer those Ashford shares to Chloe, Eleanor needed explicit consent from the Ashford family. And the Ashfords deferred directly to Edward. If Edward said no, the shares would never touch Chloe's hands.

It was a matter of survival. Chloe had to please him. If she could not win his genuine affection, she had to at least guarantee he would not purposefully block her inheritance. And if Edward found out that Chloe had orchestrated a physical attack on his newly returned biological sister? He would crush her. He would throw her out of the family with nothing.

Chloe pushed the tray of cakes another inch closer. Her eyes gleamed with a desperate, manipulative warmth as she stood beside the table, waiting for Valerie to take the bait.
