The Illegitimate Daughter

Eleanor Kensington slid the heavy gold fountain pen across the thick parchment of the checkbook. She signed the exorbitant, eye-watering figure without a single second of hesitation. Diana Caldwell was worth every single penny she demanded. Coming from a deeply rooted, old-money lineage that had unfortunately fallen on hard times due to the sheer incompetence of its recent descendants, Diana possessed a profound heritage that easily eclipsed the modern nouveau riche. She was the most prestigious and demanding etiquette teacher in the industry.

Booking her services usually required an agonizing two-year wait. However, Eleanor spared no expense and utilized every elite connection in her arsenal to secure the woman immediately. She was fiercely determined to rapidly refine her newly reunited daughter, hoping to mold Valerie into a perfect high-society lady before the grand introductory dinner.

This grand, visible gesture did not go unnoticed within the sprawling Kensington estate.

Whispers quickly ignited among the servants. Maids huddled behind marble pillars and gossiped in the dim corners of the laundry rooms, their voices hushed but sharp.

"She really is the biological child. Look at the lengths Madam is going to for her."

"Now that the real heiress is back in the picture, I wonder what is going to happen to the foster lady? She must feel so threatened."

Eleanor froze just outside the grand dining hall, catching the tail end of the servants' murmurs. A tight knot of anxiety twisted in her chest. Terrified that Chloe would overhear the harsh chatter and overthink her place in the family, Eleanor immediately abandoned her schedule. She rushed up the sweeping staircase and hurried straight toward Chloe’s lavish bedroom.

She found the girl sitting by the bay window, her delicate shoulders slumped in a picture of fragile, heartbreaking sorrow. Eleanor rushed forward and pulled the girl into a fierce, protective embrace.

"Don't listen to a single word those foolish servants say, Chloe. You have nothing to worry about. You will always be my daughter. You are my most cherished girl, and nothing will ever change that." Eleanor fervently assured her, stroking the girl's hair.

"I know. Mommy loves me the most out of anyone in the world!" Chloe nestled sweetly against Eleanor’s chest.

She looked up with bright, innocent eyes and playfully shared a few amusing anecdotes about her morning, expertly manipulating the conversation to bring a warm, relieved smile to Eleanor’s face. The deep codependency between mother and adopted daughter settled Eleanor's anxious heart. After a few more comforting words, Eleanor kissed Chloe's forehead and stepped out of the bedroom.

The heavy oak door clicked shut.

The sweet, innocent smile on Chloe’s face vanished. A cold, calculating sneer twisted her beautiful features, replacing the gentle daughter act with icy malice.

She walked over to her vanity table and sat quietly for a long moment, staring blankly at her own reflection. Suddenly, her cell phone vibrated against the polished wood. She glanced down. Seeing the familiar, strictly private number flashing on the screen, her jaw tightened.

"Mom, didn't I tell you not to call me when I'm at the Kensington estate?" Chloe spoke into the receiver, her tone dropping to a harsh, impatient whisper.

The frantic woman on the other end of the line was none other than Sylvia Mercer. She was Chloe’s biological mother. The darkest secret of Chloe’s existence was that she was never a poor, orphaned child adopted by Richard Kensington out of the goodness of his heart. She was the illegitimate daughter of Richard and his long-time mistress, Sylvia.

"I was just worried about you, darling," Sylvia fretted obsessively, her voice grating through the speaker. "I heard that Eleanor values the daughter she found very much. I heard she even went out of her way to hire Diana Caldwell to guide her etiquette."

Chloe furrowed her brows, tracing the edge of her manicured nail. "Where exactly did you hear this information?"

"Humph. If it weren't for my resourcefulness and timely information, you wouldn't have told me at all. I have to look out for you." Sylvia scoffed, clearly displeased by her daughter's lack of communication.

Chloe let out a long, irritated sigh and pressed two fingers to her throbbing temples. "Please don't cause me any more trouble. If it weren't for you finding someone to bully Valerie, Grandpa wouldn't have given her those company shares out of guilt. I am not asking for your help. I just hope you don't make my life harder than it already is, okay?"

Life in the Kensington mansion had grown increasingly precarious, solely due to her biological mother causing constant, reckless trouble. If Richard had not stepped in to cover up Sylvia’s recent mess and prevent the scandal from leaking to the press, Chloe’s pristine reputation would be in ruins. Even worse, her coveted marriage arrangement with the powerful Prescott family would have been irreparably shattered. No prestigious family would ever accept a cruel and vicious bride into their ranks.

"I'm sorry for having caused trouble for you." Sylvia lowered her voice, sounding genuinely chastised.

"Just stop meddling," Chloe demanded.

"By the way, you should be careful of Valerie," Sylvia reminded her, the obsessive anxiety spiking in her tone once again. "Eleanor has already hired Diana. If Valerie looks too impressive during the high-stakes dinner, she will overshadow you in front of the entire city. You should think of a way to prevent Diana from teaching her anything."

Chloe let out a harsh, arrogant laugh. She felt zero threat from a girl raised in the dirt.

"Do you honestly think that high-society etiquette can be learned in just half a month of training?" Chloe scoffed, her voice dripping with disdain. "The elegance of a true lady comes from a combination of inner cultivation and years of physical conditioning. It is an intrinsic trait. Those eighteen years of elite privilege that Valerie missed can never be regained. She cannot possibly have the chance to surpass me. If she wants to play pretend and learn etiquette for a few days, let her learn."

Sylvia had confidence in her daughter's refined upbringing, yet she remained crippled by paranoia. A dark, horrific regret bled into her next words.

"I should have just sold her to a remote, inescapable village in the mountains. Who would have thought she could still be found after all these years? I should have made sure she never came back." Sylvia muttered.

Panic instantly seized Chloe’s chest. Her blood ran ice cold.

"Shut up!" Chloe snapped, raw terror threading her voice. "Don't ever bring up this matter again! You cannot leak a single word! Dad can never find out that you intentionally lost her!"

Eighteen years ago, Richard had taken little Valerie out for the day. An unexpected, severe emergency at work forced him to leave the toddler under Sylvia’s temporary care. Sylvia took that golden opportunity to deliberately abandon the child in a crowded area. She successfully framed the malicious act as a tragic accident, letting Richard carry the heavy burden of losing his own daughter for nearly two decades. No one else knew that Sylvia had intentionally orchestrated the disappearance.

"I understand. I am not that foolish." Sylvia muttered defensively.

Chloe knew her mother too well. Hearing that dismissive tone, she understood that Sylvia had not taken the deadly warning to heart.

If this truth ever came to light, the consequences would be apocalyptic. Although Richard doted on Chloe, Valerie was still his own flesh and blood. Richard’s affection for Sylvia had already faded significantly over recent years. If he discovered she intentionally threw his legitimate daughter away, his lingering fondness would immediately turn into unbridled wrath. Furthermore, Eleanor would be irrevocably shattered to learn she had spent eighteen years mourning her child while raising her husband's treacherous, illegitimate offspring. Eleanor would tear Chloe apart.

Chloe ended the call and tossed the phone onto the mattress. Realizing Sylvia’s dangerous carelessness, she resolved to meet her in person tomorrow to ensure her permanent silence, by any means necessary.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the vast estate, Eleanor gripped the edge of her silk shawl. Armed with the new etiquette lessons as a perfect excuse, she finally decided to bridge the awkward, suffocating gap with Valerie. Ever since the disastrous reunion, Eleanor had deliberately avoided her biological daughter. She used the excuse of planning the grand dinner and tending to Chloe's fragile moods to stay away. In truth, she simply did not know how to face the girl.

Days had passed in this cowardly avoidance.

Eleanor stopped in front of Valerie’s bedroom door. She adjusted her breathing, raised her hand, and knocked gently three times. The wood rattled lightly.

Dead silence answered her.

She knocked a few more times, striking the door harder, but the hallway remained perfectly still.

"What is going on?" Eleanor murmured to herself. Her eyebrows furrowed in confusion.

She quickly waved down a passing maid who had been specifically assigned to serve Valerie's quarters.

"Where is Valerie?" Eleanor asked.

The servant stopped and glanced at the tightly closed door. She shifted her weight nervously and looked down at her shoes. "Madam, on the second day of your return, Miss Valerie quietly left the estate. She has not been back since."

"What?" Eleanor gasped, her eyes widening in sheer astonishment. She felt it was unbelievable that her own daughter had been absent from the home for these past few days. "Where did she go?"

The servant remained silent, shaking her head. She had no idea where the young lady went.

Bewildered and heavily flushed with embarrassment, Eleanor dismissed the maid and marched down the grand staircase to seek out her eldest son for answers. She pushed open the heavy glass doors to the sunroom.

Arthur sat in a plush armchair by the window. He held a porcelain cup, sipping his black coffee with deliberate slowness.

"Arthur, where is Valerie?" Eleanor demanded, her voice betraying her rising panic.

Arthur lowered his cup. He cast a frigid, condemning glance over his mother.

"You are asking me about Valerie?" Arthur stated, his tone laced with heavy mockery. "As a mother, you didn't even notice your own daughter was missing from the home for several days."

The blunt accusation struck Eleanor like a physical blow. Her face burned red. Her previous claims of being too busy to make time were just a cowardly shield. She had been terrified of facing her biological child, choosing instead to find weak excuses to delay the inevitable.

"Arthur... I have been overwhelmed with the dinner... I just..." Eleanor stammered desperately, trying to string together a defense.

"That is enough." Arthur waved a hand to cut her off coldly. "I will call Valerie later and ask her to come back. She has been heavily occupied with complex college experiments and is very busy."

"College experiments?" Eleanor was momentarily stunned, her brow furrowing in genuine confusion. "Valerie is already twenty-three years old. Why is she still studying instead of mingling in society?"

Arthur set his coffee cup down on the glass table. The ceramic clinked sharply in the quiet room. He fixed his gaze on her, his eyes turning as icy as a winter storm. He stared at her with deep, chilling familial dysfunction radiating from his posture.

"If you would only put a fraction of the effort toward Valerie that you do for Chloe, you wouldn't be left utterly clueless about your own flesh and blood." Arthur delivered the words with bone-chilling finality.
