A Taste of Rebellion
Ksenia's POV
His voice echoes sharply in the sterile hallway. I force a bitter smile onto my trembling lips, fighting back the burning tears that threaten to spill over my lashes. I take a deep breath, swallowing the massive lump in my throat. I will deny Vance the satisfaction of seeing how deeply his betrayal wounds me. He stares at me flatly. There is no trace of remorse in his icy eyes, no guilt softening the sharp, handsome planes of his face. He looks at me as though I am nothing more than an inconvenient stain on his immaculate floor.
"I assume you have heard everything." Vance delivers the statement devoid of any warmth, his tone businesslike.
"I did. Congratulations on your new addition." I hold my ground. I am determined to project nothing but cold indifference, even as my internal world crumbles piece by piece.
Vance sighs in exasperation, crossing his arms over his tailored designer suit. "I do not want to deal with your emotional drama right now. I love Darya, and she is carrying my unborn child. She will be moving into our house immediately."
A phantom blade twists deep in my chest, carving out whatever pathetic, lingering hope I had left for this marriage. I paste on a detached, hollow smile, plastering the mask of an unbothered woman over my shattered pride. He expects me to scream, to cry, to beg for him to reconsider. I refuse to give him that power.
"I do not care what you do with your life or your house, Vance. Do whatever you please." I hold my head high. Let him think I am heartless. He does not deserve my tears. He never earned my vulnerability in the two years we have spent together.
Vance turns to Darya with a smug gleam of vindication shining in his dark eyes. "See? I told you she feels nothing."
Darya steps out from his protective shadow. She smooths a hand over her flat stomach and offers me a sickly sweet smile that makes my skin crawl. "We are heading home anyway. I can offer you a ride in our vehicle, Ksenia. It is late, and it is not safe for a woman to be out alone in this area."
The mere thought of sitting in the back seat while they flaunt their nauseating devotion turns my stomach into painful knots. I can already picture it—him holding her hand over the center console, whispering sweet promises about the nursery they will build. The mental image is pure torture.
"Thank you for your concern, Darya, but no. I will take a cab." I decline coldly, turning my gaze away from her glowing, triumphant expression.
"Fine. Suit yourself." Vance does not cast a single backward glance as he wraps a protective arm around his pregnant mistress and leads her down the pristine hospital corridor.
I watch their retreating figures until they disappear around the corner. A hollow numbness washes over me, quickly replaced by a surge of unadulterated fury. This is the man I promised to love and cherish. This is the man I signed away my freedom for. If it were not for Nolan's safety binding my hands, the sheer humiliation of this endless sham marriage would drive me to kill him right here on the linoleum floor. The sickening reality of spending another twelve months under that massive roof, watching them build a loving family while I waste away in the guest wing, brings hot moisture to my eyes. I snatch my purse from my shoulder and march out into the biting night air.
I flag down a taxi and slide into the weathered leather seat. The city lights blur into streaks of vibrant neon against the dark, smudged window pane. My chest tightens with every passing block. I have been nothing but a loyal, obedient wife. I followed his rules, kept my mouth shut, and played my part perfectly to secure my brother's future. Now, Vance rewards my sacrifice by parading his pregnant lover into our marital home. I am expected to swallow this indignity, to fade into the background like a forgotten ghost. No more. The thought burns acidic on my tongue.
The taxi suddenly shudders, emitting a harsh, grinding noise before jerking to an abrupt halt. I brace my hands against the plastic partition to stop from flying forward into the dashboard.
"What is going on?" I ask, rubbing my bruised palms against my denim jeans.
The elderly driver turns around. His weathered face is pale, etched with deep apologies. "I am so sorry, ma'am. It is an unexpected mechanical failure. Please, I just need a few minutes to check the engine."
I lean back against the seat with a heavy sigh. "I should just cancel the ride and call another car."
The driver's eyes widen in sheer panic. "Please, ma'am! Do not cancel the ride. I am begging you. Four of my fares canceled today alone. If the company sees this data, they will penalize me, and I might lose my job. Please wait. It will take only five minutes."
I observe the deep worry lines bracketing his mouth. He is fighting for his livelihood, desperate to hold onto a job that keeps him afloat. I know what that desperation feels like. "Okay. I will wait inside."
I stare out the passenger window, realizing precisely where we broke down. We are parked directly in front of one of the city's most exclusive, upscale nightclubs. A pulsing bass thumps through the concrete pavement, vibrating against the soles of my shoes even inside the stagnant cab. Elite guests draped in expensive designer coats bypass the heavy velvet ropes, guided by massive bouncers. Uncaring laughter drifts through the cracked taxi window, carrying the promise of a carefree life.
The sickening dread of returning to that echoing mansion claws at my ribs. If I go back now, I will fall right into the symphony of Vance and Darya unpacking her bags, claiming my space, flaunting the affection I never received. That prospect pushes me straight past my breaking point. I am thoroughly sick of playing the dutiful, pathetic wife to a man who treats me like dirt beneath his immaculate luxury shoes. I need an escape.
I push the heavy car door open and step out into the cool night. Over my shoulder, I wave a brief dismissal at the driver and walk straight into the thumping heart of the club.
The heavy bass rattles my sternum the second I cross the dimly lit threshold. Dimly glowing chandeliers cast golden shadows over a sea of grinding bodies and expensive perfumes. I navigate through the throngs of wealthy people, finding a solitary empty stool at the sprawling mahogany bar. My simple denim and spaghetti-strap top feel vastly out of place amidst the sparkling cocktail dresses and tailored suits, but I do not care. I only want a singular moment of oblivion.
I catch the bartender's eye. "I need a drink. Something strong."
He nods and turns to craft a vibrant amber liquid in a heavy crystal glass. When he slides it in front of me, I reach into my purse for my wallet.
"Check, please."
The bartender wipes the polished surface with a casual shrug. "The drink has already been paid for, miss."
My head snaps up. Paranoia instantly floods my veins. I work in the emergency room. I treat assault victims every single weekend. I have seen countless women rolled through double doors because they foolishly accepted a mysterious drink from a charming stranger in a dark club. I stare down at the condensation forming on the glass, refusing to touch the rim. My heart hammers against my ribs loudly enough to rival the deafening music pumping from the massive speakers.
"You can drink it. It's safe."
A low, gravelly whisper breaks out right against the sensitive shell of my ear. The rich, intoxicating scent of expensive cologne and faint tobacco wraps around me like a heavy blanket. A massive jolt of deja vu courses through my spine, freezing my blood.
I swivel on my stool. Nikolai Sokolov steps into my space.
He moves with lethal grace, stepping in so close that he effectively traps my body between the solid mahogany counter and his towering, muscular frame. He rests his heavy hands on the edge of the bar, caging me in. He was discharged from the hospital only a few hours ago. I signed his charts myself. Yet here he stands in a devastatingly crisp black shirt, commanding the chaotic room with effortless authority. The dangerous aura rolling off him makes the surrounding clubgoers subconsciously give him a wide berth.
"Mr. Sokolov." I whisper his name, battling the sudden dryness coating my mouth.
I reach out and thank him stiffly for the drink, my fingers gripping the cool crystal. I swirl the liquid slowly. An intoxicating, reckless warmth coils in the pit of my stomach. My unfaithful husband is currently moving his pregnant girlfriend into my house. He left me to rot in my misery without a second thought. Why shouldn't I make my own choices? Why shouldn't I drown this terrible night in temporary pleasure with a man who looks at me like a predator sizing up a meal?
I lift the glass to my lips. Ignoring the warning bells ringing loudly in my skull, I down the liquid in one large gulp.
Fruity sweetness hits my tongue. A tart rush of citrus slides down my throat. There is zero burn of alcohol. It is a mocktail.
I lower the empty crystal glass, staring at his imposing figure in bewilderment.
Nikolai leans in. He removes his hands from the counter and rests his large, searing palms on either side of my hips. The heat burns through the thin denim fabric of my jeans, sending sparks flying across my skin. He lowers his head until his lips are hovering a mere breath away from mine.
"I want you sober when I claim you." His raspy voice resonates deep in my chest.
My breath catches in my throat. The casual arrogance in his bold declaration sends a shockwave through my nervous system. I tilt my chin up, fighting the magnetic pull of his imposing presence.
"Why are you so certain I will agree to any of this?" I challenge him, keeping my voice as steady as possible despite the frantic racing of my pulse.
Nikolai smirks. The corner of his mouth lifts in a dark, predatory curve that promises wicked things. "I am simply confident."
He practically hums the words against my cheek. His scorching body heat envelops me. The sheer force of his proximity scrambles my rational thoughts, pushing away all lingering thoughts of my broken marriage.
"I am married..." I begin to stammer, a weak protest falling from my quivering lips.
Nikolai crashes his mouth onto mine.
The sudden impact steals the breath straight from my lungs. The faint taste of fine whisky and the scorching heat of his invasive tongue ignite a raging fire within my blood. My hands fly up, initially intending to push his solid chest away, but my rebel fingers betray me, curling tightly into the expensive fabric of his dark shirt instead. He dominates my mouth without hesitation. His tongue strokes mine in a rhythmic, teasing dance that unearths a desperate, feral hunger I have kept buried for two miserable years.
He breaks the heated kiss for a fraction of a second, his dark, alluring eyes locking onto mine with hypnotic intensity. "I know you want this."
This time, I cut his confident words off.
I smash my lips back against his with reckless wildness. He inhales a sharp breath in surprise before his primal instincts demand control. Nikolai grabs my arms, hauling my body off the wooden stool and pulling me flush against his rock-hard frame. The stunning contrast of his solid chest pressing against my soft curves sends a jagged thrill straight to my heavy core.
To hell with Vance. To hell with every suffocating rule holding me prisoner in a lifeless vow. Tonight, I will live on my own terms. I will take back the control I surrendered so foolishly. The good, obedient wife is dead, shattered by daily betrayals and broken promises.
I tangle my fingers deep into Nikolai's thick hair and part my lips wider, inviting his thorough, devastating exploration. I surrender fully to his dominating kiss, giving myself over to the illicit, sinful night.
