The Illusion of Choice
Ksenia's POV
My chest heaves with oxygen as I press my spine flat against the freezing plaster wall. My knees shake beneath the thin fabric of my medical scrubs, threatening to buckle and send me crashing to the polished utility floor. I drag in deep, ragged breaths, trying to forcefully purge the phantom heat of Nikolai Sokolov's mouth from my lips. My skin burns where his large hand branded my chest, his long fingers trailing heavily into the deep valley of my cleavage just moments ago. The raw male hunger dripping from his thick Russian accent continues to rattle inside my skull. He did not ask for permission. He simply declared his lust, tasted my mouth, and let me run like prey.
I scrub a shaking hand over my flushed face, attempting to gather the shattered fragments of my professionalism.
“Doctor Ksenia? Are you ill? You look like a terrible mess.”
I gasp and whip my head to the right. Mrs. Higgins, the head nurse, stands a few feet down the corridor. She holds two steaming paper cups of cafeteria coffee, her brow furrowed in deep concern. She is an older woman, on the brink of retirement after thirty years of wearing down the soles of her white orthopedic shoes on these exact hospital floors.
I drag my hands through my disheveled hair, forcing my lips to curve upward into a small, reassuring smile.
“Nothing is wrong. It has just been an incredibly long night on the ward.”
“I understand the burden, Ksenia. I am so sorry you have to carry the extra responsibilities of the other attending physicians right now. You work far too hard.”
Mrs. Higgins steps closer and presses a warm paper cup directly into my trembling hands. I grip the cardboard tightly, letting the heat seep into my chilled palms. I need the caffeine desperately to ground my swirling senses. She glances down the hallway toward the heavy wooden door of Ward 16, the exact room I just bolted from.
“I think you should draft the discharge paperwork for Mr. Sokolov as soon as possible. His vitals are stable, and the sooner he vacates the premises, the better we can all breathe. You do not seem to favor his presence anyway.”
“I prefer to stay as far away from rich, powerful men as humanly possible.”
Mrs. Higgins nods grimly, taking a slow sip from her own cup.
“I suggest you maintain that stance. I hear the dark rumors swirling in the breakroom about his affairs. Nikolai Sokolov is deeply entangled in dirty underworld dealings. He operates far outside the boundaries of the law, and he possesses a reputation as a ruthless womanizer. Men with his level of dangerous money do not respect boundaries. They just take what they desire and leave a trail of destruction.”
I stare down into the dark, swirling liquid in my cup. Logic dictates that I should erase the Russian billionaire from my mind right this second. I know I should file the paperwork, hand it to the billing department, and never look back. Yet, the memory of his broad chest and his demanding kiss refuses to evaporate. His commanding words circle endlessly through my frantic brain.
“I see a lot of my younger self in you, Ksen. But the tragic difference is that I always had the luxury of making my own choices in life. I know you do not possess that same freedom.”
I press my lips into a tight line, the forced smile vanishing from my face.
“You are right. I cannot make my own choices.”
Her gentle, sympathetic words wrap around my throat like a barbed wire noose, yanking me violently back into the suffocating nightmare of my reality. I murmur a quick apology to Mrs. Higgins, claiming I need to finish checking on the remaining patients. Once I am alone, I lean heavily against the nurse's station counter, letting the dark reality of my life wash over me in agonizing waves.
This upcoming Saturday marks my second wedding anniversary with Vance. He is the managing director of this very hospital. To the outside world, we are the picture-perfect medical power couple, radiating success and domestic bliss. Behind closed doors, my existence is a carefully orchestrated prison sentence.
Two years ago, my world fractured violently. My father died in a horrific car accident, leaving me drowning in a sea of grief, funeral debt, and crushing medical bills. Overnight, I became the sole provider and caretaker for my younger brother, Nolan. The accident left Nolan permanently disabled and confined to a wheelchair. I worked excruciating, back-to-back shifts at the hospital just to keep our heads above water, returning to a tiny apartment to lift my brother in and out of his bed. I was breaking down physically and mentally.
That was when Vance stepped into the picture. He wore the mask of a compassionate savior perfectly. He offered me a warm shoulder to cry on, bringing me meals during my midnight shifts and speaking to me with gentle reverence. He promised to lift the massive weight off my shoulders. He promised to cover Nolan’s soaring medical expenses and send him to an elite facility in another city for specialized spinal surgery. Vance swore that with the right doctors, Nolan would walk again.
I was desperate, blinded by exhaustion and false hope. I walked straight into his trap. When Vance proposed, I said yes, believing I was securing a bright, healthy future for my brother.
The mask slipped barely two months into our sudden marriage.
I came home early from a shift to find him in our marital bed with another woman. When I confronted him, screaming and demanding answers, the loving husband vanished forever. Vance looked at me with dead, icy indifference. He confessed the marriage was nothing but a calculated business transaction. His wealthy father issued a strict ultimatum, threatening to cut Vance out of the family inheritance due to his reckless playboy lifestyle. Vance needed a clean, respectable, naive wife to secure his trust fund, and he chose the most desperate target he could find.
He needed to stay married for exactly three years to satisfy his father's ironclad requirements.
I threw my wedding ring at his face and threatened to call my lawyer, screaming that I would expose his fraud to the hospital board and his father. That was the moment Vance delivered the final, fatal blow. He informed me with a cruel smirk that Nolan was not undergoing specialized spinal surgery. Vance hijacked the medical transfer. He placed my disabled brother in a remote, highly guarded facility hundreds of miles away. Vance held the only authority to authorize visitors or medical treatments. Nolan was a hostage.
Vance made the terms devastatingly clear. If I played the role of the quiet, obedient wife, Nolan would receive top-tier care and physical therapy. If I disobeyed, filed for divorce, or spoke a word of the truth to anyone, Vance would abandon Nolan in the streets without a dime.
For two agonizing years, I have endured the living hell of this coercion. I endure Vance's shameless, daily infidelities. I ignore the smell of cheap perfume on his tailored suits. I swallow the emotional cruelty he feeds me over the breakfast table, and I endure the icy indifference he displays when the cameras are off. I attend charity galas on his arm, smiling until my jaw aches, playing the perfect puppet. Every single day, I count down the hours until the mandated three-year mark arrives. Just one more year. One more year, and the inheritance clause is satisfied. One more year, and I can file for divorce, reclaim my brother, and flee this country without looking back.
My shift finally concludes. I shed my medical coat and grab my purse from my locker. I need to head down to Vance's administrative office. He always insists on driving me home after my shifts to parade our supposed affection in front of the hospital staff.
I step out of the stairwell and walk into the grand main lobby of the hospital. I freeze dead in my tracks.
The exit doors are propped open. Nikolai Sokolov is walking out of the building.
He moves with lethal, terrifying grace. Six massive, heavily armed security guards flank his sides, forming an impenetrable human shield around him. The late-night hospital staff press themselves flush against the reception desks, clearing a wide path for the dangerous Russian billionaire.
Just as he crosses the glass threshold, he stops.
He turns his head slowly over his broad shoulder. His piercing, icy eyes scan over the heads of the nurses and lock directly onto me across the massive expanse of the lobby.
An unreal, violent jolt of electricity shoots straight through my veins.
The air in the room vanishes. My heart slams against my ribs in a frantic, irregular rhythm. Even from fifty feet away, I feel the crushing weight of his attention. I stand paralyzed, clutching the strap of my purse, unable to tear my gaze away from the harsh lines of his jaw and the dark intensity pooling in his eyes.
He stares at me for three agonizing seconds. Then, without a single change in expression, he breaks the contact. He turns his back to me and steps smoothly into the back seat of a waiting black SUV. The armored door slams shut, and the caravan of vehicles speeds away into the dark city streets.
I force my lungs to take in a sharp breath. Shaking my head, I push the mysterious man out of my thoughts. I cannot afford to entertain the dangerous, thrilling fire he sparks in my blood. I have to survive the monster I already married.
I walk down the plushly carpeted administrative hallway, bracing my nerves. Approaching Vance's office, I prepare my usual shield of apathy. I expect to find him bent over his desk with another random woman from the local club scene. It has become our pathetic routine.
However, the heavy mahogany door is cracked open. The conversation filtering into the quiet hallway shatters the final, fragile fragments of the hope I didn't even realize I still kept alive.
“I am truly pregnant, Vance. I took three tests to be sure.”
It is Darya. She is a newly hired pediatrician who started working at our hospital a month ago. She possesses bright blue eyes, flawless brunette curls, and an innocent charm.
“This is incredible news. You make me the happiest man alive.”
Vance's voice leaks through the crack in the door. I stop walking, the blood draining from my face. My husband speaks with an open, breathless tenderness I have never once heard directed at me. There is no manipulation in his tone, only raw, genuine adoration.
“I want to celebrate, but I am terrified. What kind of future does our child have? You are still married to that woman. I am pregnant, Vance. I will not hide my swollen belly in the shadows while you pretend to be the loyal husband for another twelve months. I refuse to be a dirty secret.”
Weeping echoes from the office. I press a trembling hand against my stomach, feeling the bile rise in my throat. He impregnated his newest mistress. We are still bound in this sickening marriage, and he is starting a family with a doctor on my floor. He changes women faster than he changes ties, but this one stuck. This one carries his child.
“You do not have to shed a single tear over her. Please, Darya, do not cry. You do not have to care about Ksenia at all.”
Vance delivers the soul-crushing blow without an ounce of hesitation.
“She is meaningless to me. Ksenia is nothing but a temporary placeholder. A piece of paper required for my inheritance. I despise her presence, but I need just one more year to drain the trust fund dry. Once the clock strikes midnight on our third anniversary, I will throw her out on the street.”
I stand outside the door, my body turning into a pillar of ice. I thought the daily betrayals had hardened my heart, but hearing him summarize my ruined life as a temporary annoyance rips the remaining air from my lungs.
“I want to live with you, Vance. I want a nursery. I cannot do this alone in a tiny apartment while your legal wife sleeps under your roof.”
“Then you will move in with me immediately. I will pack your bags myself and move you directly into the main house tomorrow morning.”
“But what about her? What will your wife say?”
“I do not care what Ksenia says or feels, sweetheart. Her feelings do not matter to me. She has no power in this dynamic. Only your happiness counts. The house is massive, she can confine herself to the guest wing where she belongs. You will have everything you want, right by my side.”
A suffocating helplessness grips my throat. I stare blankly at the polished wood of the door frame. I realize how utterly foolish I have been. Deep down in some pathetic, locked-away corner of my mind, I harbored a tiny sliver of hope that Vance would eventually realize the depth of his cruelty, apologize, and reform. I spent two years scavenging for the heartbeat of a dead, rotting sham of a marriage. The stench of it is finally suffocating me. He never loved me at all. I was just prey.
The sudden creak of heavy wood jolts me from my waking nightmare.
The office door swings open violently. I snap my head up, my wide eyes locking onto the man walking out into the hallway.
“Ksenia!” Vance calls out.
