A Mother's Defiance
Lumina POV
"Lumi, my sweet girl. I am so sorry."
My mother stares down at me through the iron bars. A profound sadness wells in her eyes, replacing the chilling stillness from just moments ago, but I remain defensive. My nerves are frayed from being locked away in this dungeon. The damp chill of the stone walls seems to seep into my very bones, amplifying the betrayal I just suffered upstairs.
I push myself off the freezing, unforgiving floor and march right up to the cold metal. "What exactly are you sorry for, Mom? Did you secretly know about Kaelen and Corbin's sickening betrayal all along? Or are you aware of their twisted, horrifying plan for Kaelen to force his permanent mark on me? He plans to take what I refuse to offer."
I grip the bars, tightening my hold until my knuckles turn white. "Are you here to convince me that I am just a selfish bitch? Should I be grateful to accept my forced role as Luna of this pack, no matter the devastating cost to my personal happiness?"
My voice shakes with unspent fury, echoing sharply down the desolate, dim hallway.
My mother presses her hands over mine against the cold iron. "No, baby girl. I would never want any of that for you."
Her maternal sincerity is undeniable. The raw anguish written across her face forces my defensive posture to falter.
She steps even closer to the bars, lowering her voice to a hushed, intense tone. "I had zero idea about their ongoing betrayal. I love your brother, he is my son, but I condemn what he has done to you. As for Kaelen, he does not deserve you as his mate. They both deserve to suffer for the immense pain they have caused the person I cherish most. I would die before I ever let them force this trauma on you."
I stare at her, my defensive walls cracking as the sheer weight of her loyalty settles over me. She is choosing me over the pack.
"I am going to help you execute a daring escape," she whispers, her eyes darting down the shadowy corridor before locking onto mine again. "I will not allow them to cause you another moment of pain, but I need you to trust me. We need to orchestrate this perfectly. You must play along and pretend to accept their twisted three-way arrangement so we can get you out of here."
I shake my head, the bitter reality of my situation momentarily clouding the shred of hope she just offered. "Mom, Dad agrees with their perverse plan. He stood right there and supported Alpha Garret."
Her eyes flash with a deep, unprecedented anger that I have never seen directed at her mate.
"That man upstairs is not the man who promised to love me and our children," she snaps quietly, her jaw tight. "It took everything in me to stomach his self-righteous speeches just now. He went on and on about pack duty and sacrificing your happiness for the greater good. I promise you that we will leave this wretched place and never look back. I will handle all the complex logistics, including bringing your brother Declan with us. You let me worry about the details."
She squeezes my fingers tightly through the bars, her grip grounding me. "I simply need you to put on the performance of a lifetime. When your father comes down to the dungeons, you must pretend to forgive them. Can you do that for me, Lumi?"
Before I can respond out loud, a strong, reassuring presence rises in the quiet depths of my mind.
*Your mom is right, Lumi. We desperately need to get out of this cell if we have any realistic hope of escaping.*
Vela's voice is pragmatic and clear, anchoring my chaotic, racing thoughts. The despair that previously choked me shifts into cold, calculated tactical deception.
Hearing my internal shift, my mother gasps. Her eyes widen as she realizes what is happening inside me.
"You have access to your inner wolf," she breathes out.
I offer her my first genuine smile in two horrific days. "I do. Her name is Vela. She is amazing, Mom, and she has been hiding our unique scent from the rest of the oblivious pack."
A wave of immense relief and pride washes over my mother’s features. She realizes that the Alpha and Voss are still in the dark regarding my shift. We have a crucial tactical advantage they never saw coming.
"Good," she says, her tone hardening with fierce resolve. "I promise to get you as far away from this nightmare as possible. I love you, baby girl. Never forget that, no matter what happens."
"I love you too, Mom. I trust you."
She pulls away from the bars, her expression smoothing back into a mask of quiet, maternal concern. "I am going to tell Voss that you are broken and willing to listen to reason."
She slips away back up the stairs, leaving me to prepare for my role.
I sit back heavily on the thin mattress. I force myself to wait.
The agonizing silence stretches on, making it feel like an eternity has passed in the dim, damp dungeon. The cold seeps through my clothes, but the fire of Vela's presence and my mother's unwavering support block out the chill.
Finally, the heavy iron door at the end of the corridor groans open.
I hear the sequential clicking of heavy boots against the stone, steadily approaching my cell. I look up as the man I once thought could never hurt me steps into the dim light.
Voss has a soft, relieved smile plastered across his face.
"I know you are still upset, but your mom said you are finally willing to talk reasonably with Corbin and Kaelen," he says, his tone condescending and smooth. "Corbin is at the pack hospital asking for you. Are you ready to go there and let them make their amends, princess?"
An overwhelming urge to scream at him ravages my throat. He dares to call me his princess after condemning me to biological violation for the sake of a strong bloodline. I fiercely swallow the bitter bile rising in my throat and stick to the survival plan.
"I won't make any promises, but I will hear them out," I reply, keeping my voice empty and compliant.
His relieved smile spreads widely across his face. He hastens to unlock the heavy iron mechanism of my cell door.
The rusted hinges squeal as he pulls it open. I hesitantly step out into the corridor, maintaining my broken facade.
Voss reaches out. He places his large hands heavily on my shoulders.
It is a familiar touch that used to bring me comfort, warmth, and a deep sense of safety. Now, it just makes my skin crawl with disgust. Every fiber of my being rejects the contact. This singular moment defines the death of my emotional connection to Voss.
I demand of myself not to shake his hands off as he pulls me slightly closer.
"I promise you that everything is going to work out, Lumi," he says blindly, oblivious to the intense hatred burning beneath my skin. "You will see."
I give him a small, submissive nod. He drops his hands and confidently leads me down the long, dim hallway toward the hospital.
