Caged Defiance
Lumina POV
We sit in the oppressive silence of the dungeon, the stone walls weeping with foul moisture that leeches the precious warmth from my skin. My spine rests heavily against the unforgiving rock surface, providing a harsh anchor to reality. The space is a suffocating, claustrophobic cage designed to break spirits. Through the shadows, the heavy iron bars mock my captivity.
"Vela, how the hell are we going to get out of here? Just hearing them talk is making my skin crawl. They act like this sick proposition is a casual negotiation. They expect me to be thrilled to share my fated mate with my own flesh and blood. Comparing me sharing Kaelen with Corbin to what identical twins do is a flawed, disgusting analogy. It is not the same in any way, shape, or form."
Vela paces against the confines of my mind, her wolf spirit bristling with dark irritation. "They are destined by the goddess to share a mate because they were once one individual that split into two in their mother's womb. There is no jealousy or hurt in their relationship because it is meant to be. There is no betrayal of the sacred bond in that scenario. This current nightmare is purely Kaelen wanting his cake and eating it too. I refuse to be his cake, Lumi. This is your brother taking what was meant to only be yours. I am masking our scent and keeping it hidden so they have no idea you possess your wolf. It will make our escape easier. You must promise me you will never give up. We will orchestrate a successful escape. We will be free of this place."
"The hardest pill to swallow is my father," I reply through our mind-link, tracing the damp grout between the stones with my shivering fingers. "Never did I expect him to cast my heart aside for what the Alpha and my brother demanded. To expect me to accept this messed up situation that everyone else has created is beyond insane. I would rather forfeit my life than let Kaelen place his mark on my neck."
"Never say such a thing again. You must fight. We survive this," Vela snarls back, her raw determination fortifying my crumbling resolve.
Before I can guarantee my wolf that I will fight until my last breath, a subtle scuff of boots against the stone breaks the silence. The heavy iron cell door unlocks with a jarring, metallic clank that rattles my teeth.
I scramble backward without a second thought. My bare feet slip on the damp floor before I press my spine firmly against the freezing stone wall. Kaelen and Corbin step inside the cell, bringing the metallic scent of their combined arousal and lingering guilt into the tight space. My stomach churns, recognizing the intimate musk hanging over them.
Kaelen has the unmitigated audacity to drop to his knees on the filthy floor. He gazes up at me with wide, begging eyes, his face a pathetic mask of sorrow. "Lumi, baby, please talk to me. No one is going to hurt you again, I swear it upon my life. I love you, and so does Corbin. He is sorry for hitting you, and he has been punished for his actions. We possess a deep, profound love for you. Please just give us a chance to prove it."
I cross my arms over my chest, refusing to let him see my fingers tremble. "It is far too late for you to make hollow promises, Kaelen. Not only did you maliciously betray me by fucking my brother every single chance you got, but you stood by and watched me suffer day after day. You knew why he hated me. You saw the daily torment I endured at his hands. All you had to do was be honest. I would have been devastated that my mate did not want me, but I would have stepped aside so you two could be together without the lies. You, my ex-brother, my ex-father, and the Alpha are trying to subject me to a lifetime of pain. Accept my formal rejection and I will permanently leave the pack so you can happily lead with Corbin right by your side."
Corbin lets out a low, warning growl at my disrespect. He glares at me with pure animosity, offended that I fail to bow to his desires, but I do not spare him a single glance. My attention remains chained to Kaelen's gaze.
"Torin," I whisper.
Kaelen’s posture stiffens and snaps rigid. The color of his irises bleeds out, replaced by a pitch-black, lethal intensity. The temperature in the cell drops as the massive inner wolf tears through the surface, taking total control of the human body. Torin steps toward me with heavy, predatory strides.
Corbin panics and grabs Torin's thick bicep in a desperate, tight grasp. "Kaelen, stop."
Torin whirls on Corbin with blinding speed. He rips his arm out of Corbin's grip, bearing his elongated fangs in a vicious snarl. "You are not my mate. I never wanted to be with you, but my human begged me because he let himself fall in love with you despite my warnings. I gave in to make my human happy. Your actions have jeopardized my sacred relationship with my fated mate. Do not touch me again. If I lose my mate tonight, I will not allow Kaelen to touch you ever again."
Corbin’s eyes widen in paralyzing fear. He whimpers like a beaten pup and drops his hands to his sides, retreating a cowardly step toward the bars.
Torin slowly turns his intense gaze back to me. Deep desperation and profound regret swim in his dark eyes, replacing the lethal fury from a second prior. The raw anger radiating from him softens as he reaches a trembling, scarred hand forward, attempting to cup my wet cheek.
I flinch away from his approaching fingers, pressing the back of my skull harder against the stone to put distance between us. "Do not touch me. You may not have wanted it, but you willfully allowed it. You knew exactly what you were doing. You knew who I was, and you continued to fuck him. You are as guilty as Kaelen. I will never take back my rejection. You are no longer my mate."
The crushing weight of my unyielding rejection shatters Torin’s restraint into agonizing jagged pieces. A deafening, feral roar shakes the stone walls of the dungeon. Fueled by devastating heartbreak and raw fury, Torin spins around and launches his massive frame at my brother.
Torin aggressively tackles Corbin directly to the hard stone floor. The back of Corbin's head smacks against the ground with a sickening thud. Torin straddles his chest and unleashes pure hell. He ruthlessly and methodically batters Corbin’s face with heavy, punishing blows. The grotesque sound of fists crushing bone and tearing soft flesh echoes loudly through the small cell. Blood splatters across the damp stones, painting the gray floor a gruesome crimson. Corbin tries to raise his arms to block the onslaught, but Torin’s monstrous strength shatters his defenses with ease. Another brutal left hook snaps Corbin's head to the side, spraying blood against the iron bars.
I press myself flush against the corner, watching the bloody spectacle with wide eyes. A tiny, foolish part of me wants to scream, to protect the brother who used to read me bedtime stories, but a larger, colder part of me knows he is getting exactly what he deserves. I edge along the rough wall, calculating the distance to the open iron door. I need to use this chaotic, bloody distraction to slip out and disappear into the dense woods before they notice my absence.
Before I can make a run for freedom, the frantic pounding of heavy footsteps thunders down the hallway. Alpha Garret and Voss—the man who is no longer my father—rush into the cramped cell, crowding the exit.
"Shift now!" Garret commands with terrifying authority, projecting his oppressive Alpha aura to dominate the shifting air.
The two older men lunge forward into the fray. They grab Torin by the broad shoulders and drag the heavily panting wolf off the bloody Beta. Torin snarls and thrashes against their rigid hold, his claws scraping uselessly against the stone floor. He fights the submission, seeking to return to his prey, but the Alpha's command is too strong to resist. The feral light slowly fades from his eyes as he is physically forced to concede control back to the human Kaelen.
Without a single second of hesitation, Kaelen drops to the bloody floor. He ignores his fated mate cowering in the corner. He tenderly cradles Corbin’s battered head in his lap, softly kissing the bruised and bleeding skin of my brother's swollen face. It is a blatantly intimate display of deep love. A love that was fundamentally meant only for me. My stomach twists with profound revulsion, watching him sob over the man he chose over our sacred bond.
Voss steps forward, blocking my path to the door. He glares at me with undisguised contempt, folding his arms imposing over his chest. "What the hell is wrong with you, Lumina? He could have killed your brother. Why are you being such a selfish bitch? You do not care in the slightest that your own flesh and blood was nearly beaten to death. This is not the daughter I raised."
I keep my facial expression impassive, locking my jaw until my teeth ache. I refuse to show this traitor even a fraction of my immense internal pain. "It is incredibly safe to say you aren't the father that lovingly raised me, so we are even. Once I am gone, you will not have to worry about me being a bitch anymore."
Alpha Garret steps past Voss, stopping inches away from my face. He looks down at me with cold, ruthless calculation. "Enough of this nonsense. You will remain in this cell until the ceremony. Kaelen will mark and mate you even if it has to be done by force. We tried it Kaelen's way, and it did not work. Now we are doing it my way. This pack will not be deprived of its rightful Luna because you cannot accept that your mate is in love with your brother. You will unconditionally provide the pack a strong heir and perform your duties as Luna, regardless of your personal trauma."
"Dad," Kaelen argues weakly from the floor, his hands slick with Corbin's fresh blood.
Garret ignores him without a sideways glance. "I do not want to hear it, Kaelen. Gather your Beta and get him to the infirmary right now. She stays here."
Kaelen carefully lifts Corbin's limp body off the ground, carrying my heavily battered brother in his arms as he walks out of the cell. Garret follows closely behind, his heavy boots clicking sequentially against the stone.
Voss lingers behind in the doorway. He looks at me with a cowardly, pathetic expression, silently begging for my unearned sympathy. "Lumi, please try and understand the pack dynamics. I hope one day you will forgive me for this stance. I am only doing what is best for everyone. Once the forced bond is fully complete, you will magically be perfectly happy with your mate. Your life might not be exactly how you envisioned it, but Kaelen does love you despite what Garret said. He loves you both."
I glare at him with burning, radiant hatred. "I do not understand, and I will never understand. I hate you. You are no longer my father."
Voss releases a heavy sigh that echoes in the dim space. He turns his back and pulls the heavy iron door shut. The defining click of the lock seals me inside my permanent nightmare. His footsteps slowly fade away down the corridor, leaving me in the suffocating darkness.
I slide slowly down the freezing stone wall until I hit the floor. The moment the silence settles, the dam breaks. I let my suppressed tears fall freely, drawing my knees to my chest and weeping into the rough fabric of my pants. I am shattered by the sheer cruelty and severe betrayal of the very people meant to protect me. My own father is willing to stand by and let Kaelen non-consensually force his mark on me. He expects me to endure biological violation for the sake of a strong bloodline.
Does my mother know what they are planning to do to me? Does Harper believe I should just get over the fact her brother wants to breed me while fucking Corbin on a daily basis?
Bitter bile rises aggressively in my throat. I bury my face in my hands, unable to cope with the nightmare my life has become. The distant, ominous screech of the heavy corridor door opening once more forces my head up.
I wipe the hot tears from my eyes, bracing my shivering frame for another brutal confrontation with a male pack member.
My mother stands quietly on the other side of the iron bars, her hands softly gripping the cold metal. She stares down at me with an intense, unreadable expression. No pity, no anger, just a chilling, serene stillness that freezes the blood in my veins.
My heart immediately sinks; she knows.
