Simmering Tension
Chiara pressed her hand against the heavy mahogany door of the private cabin. Her heart pounded a frantic rhythm against her ribcage. She forced a tight smile onto her lips, desperate to mask the boiling rage churning in her stomach. Taking a shallow breath, she pushed the polished wood forward and stepped into the sprawling office.
Dario stood imposing by the massive floor-to-ceiling glass window. His broad back faced her, his sharp profile silhouetted against the city skyline. He looked deceptively serene, a towering figure projecting a profound sense of dominance. For a fleeting second, Chiara felt a begrudging flutter of admiration for the silent, powerful storm he emanated. She cursed herself for the treacherous thought, biting the inside of her cheek to ground her senses. She was in the den of a mafia boss.
He did not bother to turn around to acknowledge her presence.
"I need a glass of lukewarm water."
His blunt, arrogant order cut through the silence. Chiara clamped her jaw shut. Choosing to remain silent to avoid triggering a fight, she scanned the room and spotted a water dispenser. She walked over, prepared a glass with lukewarm water, and placed it gently onto his massive wooden desk. She took a step back, clasping her hands together in a display of subservience.
"Sir."
Dario cast a scrutinizing look over his shoulder. He seemed surprised by her sudden docile behavior. He wrongfully assumed she was clinging to her new job, terrified of his reach and raw power. He turned fully around, closing the distance to his desk. He leaned his muscular hips against the edge of the wood, crossing his arms over his broad chest. His tailored suit stretched tight across his wide shoulders.
"I expected a temper tantrum. It seems you are worried about losing your position here. Do not fret. Even if I toss you out of this building today, someone else will surely be there to recruit you again."
He delivered the cruel remark with a casual sneer, insinuating she used her body and her connection with men to survive. Chiara felt a sharp stab of indignation pierce her chest. She struggled to keep her composure intact, digging her fingernails into her palms. She lifted her chin, casting a narrow, defiant glance directly into his mocking face.
"You may assume anything you like, sir."
Her calm detachment struck a raw nerve. Dario could not drop the irritating issue. The thought of her with another man, especially his own blood, gnawed at his pride. He pushed off the desk, his jaw clenching tight as he glared down at her. He decided to directly insult her character, his tone dropping into an aggressive interrogation.
"How did you secure this high-paying position? Did Vince specifically pull strings to get you in here? Is that the grand perk of playing his devoted girlfriend?"
Chiara kept her face impassive. She maintained an even tone, refusing to give him the satisfaction of seeing her crack under his oppressive weight.
"Vince has not assisted me in any way. A friend of mine suggested I attend the open interview, and I earned this position on my own merit. Furthermore, if you truly do not think I should work here, you should feel free to terminate me immediately. I would not have an issue with leaving."
Her unbreakable detachment served to fracture his volatile temper. The idea that she could walk away from him so easily, that she did not need this job or his approval, infuriated him. Dario slammed his large palm down onto his leather armrest with a deafening crack. He sprang to his feet, towering over her like an enraged predator cornering its prey.
"So you want to act like Vince is a wonderful guy while painting me as a horrible person!"
Chiara trembled at his vicious, unhinged glare. The sheer force of his booming voice echoed off the cabin walls. She realized with chilling clarity that she simply could not survive in the same enclosed room as him. The air was too thin, his presence too suffocating. She needed to escape before the situation escalated beyond repair. Remaining courteous to protect herself from his wrath, she lowered her head in a mock apology, breaking eye contact.
"I sincerely want to live in peace. From today onward, I promise I will never cross paths with you again."
She murmured the words to the floor, accepting defeat to secure her exit. She waited for him to dismiss her, but a sudden, tight stillness fell over the room. The silence was thick and heavy, pressing against her eardrums. Startled by the lack of response, she looked up and gasped. She stepped backward in pure surprise.
Dario had moved. He was dangerously close to her. His broad chest was mere inches from her face, blocking out the light from the window. Panic surged through her veins. As she scrambled to put distance between them, the sharp heel of her shoe caught the thick fibers of the carpet. She stumbled backward, losing her balance completely. She flailed her arms, bracing for the hard impact of the floor.
Dario reacted with lightning speed. His strong arm shot out, wrapping tightly around her lower back. He yanked her forward, preventing her fall.
Chiara slammed into the hard wall of his chest. Captured firmly in his muscular arms, she breathed heavily, her chest heaving against his own. Her wide, panicked eyes shone directly into his intense, sky-blue irises. The extreme physical proximity sent a dangerous electric shock straight down her spine.
Dario stared down at her parted lips. The sudden closeness made his throat itch with a primal, undeniable need. He was captivated by her sweet, intoxicating fruity scent, the fragrance wrapping around his senses like a drug. His Adam's apple bounced heavily as he swallowed hard. He leaned his face in closer, his gaze dropping to her mouth.
"You manage to entice me with your attractiveness. Do you not know you should never seduce a man who already has things planned for you?"
His words dropped like heavy stones against her flushed face. He spoke in a low, rumbling growl that vibrated through his chest and into hers. His warm breath and fresh, masculine aroma enveloped her senses, clouding her judgment. His lips hovered a fraction of an inch from hers. The heat radiating from his large body seeped through her thin blouse, burning her skin.
Chiara stared into the mesmerizing fire smoldering deeply in his eyes. She felt the magnetic pull of his dominance urging her to lean forward and close the tiny gap between their mouths. Just before she could surrender to the dangerous, hypnotic daydream, a sharp alarm jolted forcefully through her veins. The primal warning snapped her out of the intoxicating trance. She realized that yielding to this pitch-black recess of a man would only bring absolute ruin to her life.
She desperately planted her hands against his hard chest and pulled her upper body back from the brink. She looked up at him, her chest rising and falling rapidly as she wielded her only shield.
"I am your nephew’s girlfriend," she whispered.
