Nowhere to Hide
Chiara buried her chin into her collarbone, praying her falling hair would act as a shield against the impending disaster. She bent her neck as low as physically possible, keeping her gaze locked on the scuffed tips of her polished shoes. Her pulse hammered a frantic, deafening rhythm against her ribs. She recited a desperate prayer in her head, begging whatever higher power was listening to let her go unnoticed by the terrifying man she detested with every fiber of her being. She just needed to blend into the trembling wall of employees. She willed herself to become invisible, hoping the floorboards would simply open up and swallow her whole.
Silas broke the suffocating silence. He separated himself from the rigid crowd and stepped into the center aisle. He straightened his posture, plastering a mask of forced, trembling confidence over his sweating features. He needed to salvage this terrifying situation before the VIP tore the department apart.
"Sir, I am the floor manager."
Dario stopped his predatory march. He slowly turned his head to lock eyes with the man. This was the exact target he had been hunting since he walked into the building. Silas was the idiot who had sent a woman to his hotel room the previous night to deliver the sensitive corporate file. Dario’s jaw clenched. A vicious storm raged inside his chest. He was obsessed with the burning memory of that exact woman. She had brutally kicked him in the groin and thrown vile insults at his face when he had offered her a sliver of mercy. The phantom ache in between his legs flared at the mere thought of her defiance. His overwhelming desire for violent revenge was clawing at his throat. He wanted to hunt her down and make her pay for bruising his ego. The only thing keeping him from tearing the city apart to find her was his frustrating belief that she belonged to his nephew. He still thought she was Vince’s beloved girlfriend, placing an invisible barrier around her that he was struggling not to shatter.
Dario stepped closer to the manager. His voice boomed through the quiet office, carrying a thunderous, aggressive weight.
"What sort of operation were you running last night that required a woman’s aid for a sensitive corporate delivery? Your arms and legs appear to be functioning. Why did you send her, and what exactly do you know about that woman?"
Silas flinched. He wiped a thick bead of sweat from his forehead. The furious accusation caught him off guard. He had assumed sending a proxy was a minor infraction. He never expected to be interrogated like a criminal over a simple document drop-off.
"Please pardon me, sir. My grandmother fell severely ill, and Mr. Vince called with the assignment at the last minute. I was caught in a difficult predicament and needed immediate coverage. The girl who took my place was a random helper. She is insignificant and irrelevant to our daily operations."
Hidden within the packed line of employees, Chiara dug her fingernails into her palms until the skin stung. Pure terror spiked through her veins. Her cheeks flushed a deep, burning red. She realized with shocking clarity that his very first topic of conversation upon entering the building was a thinly veiled hunt. He was purposefully tracking her down. The file delivery incident was just a convenient excuse to find her.
Dario shifted his ruthless focus. The excuse about the sick grandmother irritated him, but he let the issue of the girl go for the moment. He had other critical business to address on this floor, and he needed to assert his dominance over the staff.
"I was informed before my arrival that you fired your senior editor yesterday. Explain the situation."
Silas swallowed hard. He kept his eyes averted from the dominating presence in front of him, staring intently at the knot of Dario's silk tie.
"Yes, sir. She was caught red-handed stealing crucial company documents and attempting to sell them to a rival organization. A formal case has been filed, and we handed her over to the police this morning. She will face the legal consequences of her actions."
Dario stared at the manager. A chilling, murderous sarcasm curled the corner of his mouth. His dark eyes held no trace of mercy.
"If this specific business were fully mine, she would not be talking to the police right now. That thieving woman would be dead by now."
The lethal declaration echoed across the frozen office floor. A collective shudder rippled through the staff. Chiara kept her head bowed. The air left her lungs in a sharp rush. Her horrifying suspicion was cemented into silent reality. Dario Romano was not just a harsh businessman demanding perfection. He was a literal monster masquerading in a tailored human suit. He spoke of murder with the casual ease of ordering a morning espresso.
Dario turned his back on Silas and addressed the breathless staff. His voice cracked like a whip over their heads.
"Get back to your desks. All of you."
The employees scattered like frightened prey, hurrying to their workstations in dead silence. Dario snapped his attention back to the manager. He issued a final, brutal ultimatum.
"You have until four o'clock this afternoon to recruit a new, skilled editor and place the report on my desk. If you fail to meet that deadline, you will lose your job."
Dario did not wait for a response. He turned on his heel and began his march toward the private CEO cabin at the end of the floor.
Panic seized Silas. The threat of losing his hard-earned career shattered his remaining composure. He blurted out his salvation without a single thought for the catastrophic consequences.
"Sir, I already hired a replacement this morning! She is present right now!"
Dario froze mid-step.
"Miss Chiara, please step forward!"
The words echoed through the room like a death sentence. Silas waved his hand frantically toward her desk, demanding she present herself to the boss.
Dario slowly turned his towering frame around. His dark eyes scanned the room and locked onto the target. There she was. Standing frozen in the middle of the office floor was the exact same petite woman who had stolen his sleep and battered his pride. She was inexplicably standing right in the middle of his territory, trapped under his roof.
Chiara felt the heavy weight of his predatory gaze pin her in place. Her worst nightmare was unfolding in broad daylight. She forced her leaden legs to move, stepping out from behind the safety of her desk. She offered a trembling, forced smile that failed to reach her terrified eyes.
"Good morning, sir."
Her greeting was barely audible, choked by the massive lump forming in her throat.
The surrounding employees held their breath. They knew the legendary wrath of the man standing before them. They waited for the inevitable explosion, bracing themselves for the poor girl to be fired on the spot.
Instead, a dark, amused chuckle rumbled from Dario’s chest. The sound was infinitely more terrifying than a scream, sending a fresh wave of mind-numbing dread through the onlookers. He stared directly into her fearful eyes, savoring the panic written across her delicate features. The predator had finally cornered his prey.
"I want to talk to Miss Chiara privately in my cabin. I want zero interruptions from anyone on this floor."
He turned and strode away. The heavy wooden door of the private cabin clicked shut behind him, sealing her fate.
The office immediately erupted into wild, morbid whispers. The staff speculated in hushed tones on the impending fate of the poor new girl. As the dread-filled room slowly dispersed back to work, Silas approached Chiara with a look of deep regret. He realized too late that he had just thrown her directly to the wolves on her very first day.
"I am sorry for putting you on the spot like that. A word of advice for dealing with him. Using fewer words might greatly benefit your survival in there."
Silas walked away to his desk, blissfully unaware of the catastrophic, violent history already shared between the two of them. Words were the least of her problems at this point.
Chiara stared at the wooden door at the end of the hall. Her heart pounded relentlessly against her ribs, threatening to crack the bone. Severe anxiety dried out her throat, making it painful to swallow. She rubbed her damp palms together, forcing her trembling legs to carry her forward. She slowly climbed the short set of stairs leading up to confront the devil in his lair.
Concluding that the world was simply too cruelly small, she sighed and knocked.
