A Deceptive Proposal
Attempting to mask the deep anxiety churning in her gut, Camilla Falcone kept her gaze fixed on Dario’s unyielding back. The sheer breadth of his shoulders sent a spike of intimidation through her. She drew a deep breath to steady her racing pulse, acutely aware of the lethal power he held in his hands. The Falcone family possessed a lot of clout in the political sphere, enough to bend iron to their will and open many prestigious doors in the city. Yet, Dario’s might eclipsed them all by a staggering margin. He was a force of nature, a notorious mafia lord who ruled the underworld with an iron fist. Gaining his favor would elevate her to untouchable heights.
"I hope I didn't keep you waiting too long," Camilla stated in a soft, practiced tone, resolving to play the role of the meek, innocent victim.
Dario turned around. His dark eyes locked onto hers with a lethal intensity. He did not look pleased to see her standing in his sanctuary.
"If you think you possess the privilege to keep me waiting, you are mistaken, Miss Falcone. Have a seat." Dario paused, letting the cold command hang in the heavy air. "You are here because I demanded it."
Camilla swallowed the lump of fear in her throat. She needed to tread carefully. Being haughty would get her nowhere with a man of his dangerous reputation. She moved toward the plush sofa, took a seat, and crossed one leg over the other. She offered a sweet, tentative smile, pretending to be unbothered by his chilling reception.
"Thank you for seeing me, Dario," Camilla murmured.
Dario paced toward the chair opposite hers and sat down. His piercing gaze seemed to strip away her defenses, searching for the truth hidden beneath her designer clothes.
"Did you come to my hotel room at my grandfather's request when I was drugged?" Dario confronted her without preamble.
Camilla parted her lips, letting out a measured gasp. She made her knees quiver, playing the part of a terrified girl cornered by a predator. She needed a flawless excuse to weave herself into his life and secure his immense wealth.
"I was there." Camilla lowered her eyes to the floor, feigning deep remorse. She delayed providing a simple answer, terrified he would swat her away if she spoke too quickly. "I am sorry. When your grandfather reached out to me, I refused to go along with his scheme. But then he held my hand and begged. I just could not turn an old man down."
Dario remained silent for a long moment. His dark eyes evaluated her posture. Someone like him could pluck the truth from the air, but Camilla prayed her acting was convincing enough.
"You mean to tell me that I spent the night with you? What made you run away the next morning?" Dario asked.
Camilla furrowed her brow, pretending to be perplexed by the question. A spike of unease hit her. Was he toying with her?
"Because I want to discuss marriage with the girl I spent the night with," Dario added, his voice low and smooth, expressing his supposed desire.
Greedy triumph exploded in Camilla’s chest. A wild thrill rushed through her veins. She had done it. She had the billionaire mafia lord falling right into her trap. She wanted to leap up and throw her arms around his neck, but she restrained her eager impulses. She had to maintain her fragile facade of sadness.
"I was terrified you would reject the arrangement and do something terrible to me." Camilla forced out melodramatic tears. The salty drops streamed down her cheeks as she let out a pathetic sob. "I fled out of pure fear."
Dario rose from his seat. He stepped toward her and gracefully lowered himself, his knee touching the expensive rug. He reached out and gently took her trembling hands into his large, warm palms.
Camilla felt as though she were floating in a dream. She had the ruthless, ungodly Dario Romano under her spell. He was practically kneeling at her feet. She wondered if this was the same avaricious mafia boss everyone feared.
"I don't want anything from you, Dario. I just wanted to do the right thing," Camilla whispered, continuing her theatrical melodrama.
She raised her head to look into his eyes. She saw a flicker of something unreadable in his dark gaze, a mix of danger and allure. Her blinding ambition clouded her judgment. She noticed his broad chest leaning closer. Her heart trilled with joy. He was going to kiss her. This was the moment that would seal her future.
Camilla closed her eyes, tipped her chin up, and willingly allowed him to pull her in for a quick, intimate kiss.
Their lips met.
Dario kept his eyes wide open. His gaze remained cold and calculating, stripping away her illusions in a fraction of a second. The moment he tasted her mouth, reality hit him like a physical blow to the chest. He had not seen the face of the true girl from the dim hotel room, but her unique taste and intoxicating scent were permanently burned into his memory. The real girl possessed a raw, untamed flavor that made his blood run hot. The woman currently in his arms smelled of heavy designer perfume and tasted of cheap, practiced deception. She lacked the sweet, distinct essence that had driven him mad with primal desire just twenty-four hours ago. The contrast was jarring and deeply offensive to his senses.
This woman was a total fraud.
A sudden, explosive flash of quiet rage erupted in Dario’s chest. He yanked himself away from her in a blur of motion, discarding her grip like unwanted trash. He grabbed her arm and forcefully flung her down.
Camilla hit the hard wooden floor with a loud thud. Her dress hiked up her thighs as she scrambled to catch her balance.
"Ouch! Are you crazy?!" Camilla shrieked in physical pain, clutching her bruised knee. The humiliation of being tossed aside like garbage stung worse than the impact.
"Do you still have a mouth to shout with?" Dario snarled, his booming, authoritative voice easily overpowering her pathetic shrieks. "Be grateful to God that I spare your life today. You are a conceited harlot for daring to believe Dario Romano could be duped by fake tears."
Camilla glared at him, dropping her sweet act. Her chest heaved with angry pants.
"You are the one who kissed me! I did not ask for that!" Camilla yelled back.
"You showed your stupidity by walking into the lion's den with a mouth full of lies. You were rejoicing in your head, thinking I was entranced by your words. Trust me, I knew your lies from the very start. I only tested you with that kiss to witness the true, disgusting depths of your deception. You are far more filthy than I anticipated. Save your tricks for someone else and get out of my sight." Dario delivered the brutal truth.
Desperate and stripped of her dignity, Camilla pushed herself off the ground. Her grand ambitions were shattering right before her eyes. She abandoned her victim act and stepped closer to his boots, pathetically begging for a chance.
"I apologize, Dario! I lied. But please, give me a chance." Camilla cried out, reaching her hands toward him in a futile gesture. "I like you. I want to be with you. I want to attach myself to your family name and your undeniable might. You are the only man in this city worthy of my devotion. I will do whatever you ask. I will be whatever you need. I will never lie to you again. Just let me stay by your side. Please!"
Dario stared down at her with a merciless, disgusted glare. He was the god of might in their world, the one who could both steal and give life, and he had no pity for a treacherous rat.
"Despite your treacherous trickery, I am giving you the greatest chance possible by allowing you to leave this room safely with your pathetic life intact. Now, if you utter a single word to me ever again, I will wipe your family name from the planet by tomorrow morning. Your precious Falcone clout will burn to ashes before sunrise." Dario issued the lethal command. His eyes burned with a dark wrath, ready to swallow her whole.
Terrified by his ungodly rage, Camilla scrambled backward. Her tears fell genuine this time, fueled by pure terror. She tried to speak, but the words died in her throat. She did not dare utter another syllable. She turned and fled the room, her designer heels clicking frantically against the hardwood floor. Her heart crashed into pieces as the heavy doors slammed shut behind her, leaving her ambitions in ruins.
Left alone in the suffocating silence, Dario breathed heavily. The air in the penthouse felt thick and stagnant, tainted by the lingering smell of Camilla's artificial perfume. He slowly approached the large glass window, his jaw clenched so tight his teeth ground together. He placed his hands in his pockets and gazed out at the pitch-black lake reflecting the silver moonlight. His mind spun in relentless circles. His simmering rage rapidly morphed into a maddening, clawing disappointment over his subordinates' continued failure to locate the real girl. How hard could it be to track down one woman in this city?
The scent of the mysterious woman still haunted his senses, mocking him from the shadows of his own memory. The recollection of her soft skin and her authentic, intoxicating taste drove a fresh spike of obsession into his brain. He needed to find her. He needed to possess her again, to figure out why she had run away from his bed and vanished without a single trace. The thought of another man finding her first made his blood boil with a territorial fury he had never experienced before.
"Fuck this shit! I will not waste time tearing you apart for conspiring against me. Let me grab your neck first," Dario muttered into the darkness, unable to find an ounce of peace.
