The Scars of Betrayal

"Let me go! What you're doing is illegal!" Nara screamed.

She fought viciously against the security guards pinning her down to the floor. The harsh wooden stage scraped against her bare knees. She kicked her legs and twisted her torso, her wrists burning against their unyielding iron grip. Her chest heaved as she fought for every breath, refusing to surrender to the overwhelming physical weight crushing her down. The blinding flashes of the cameras fired off like rapid gunshots, capturing her humiliation from every possible angle.

She lifted her head, staring straight through the flashing bulbs directly at Kaelen.

"Kaelen, can you look me in the eye and swear to the world that Shaya is Aura?" she demanded.

Her exposed back bore the jagged whip scars of her past. The raised, mutilated flesh formed a crisscrossing map of unspeakable torture. It was a visual slap to Kaelen's conscience. His hands curled into tight fists by his sides. The trimmed nails dug sharply into his palms until the skin nearly broke. He was the one who had meticulously treated those exact wounds five years ago. He had sat by her bedside for countless sleepless nights, listening to her feverish whimpers. He had wrapped her bleeding back layer by layer with white bandages, swearing on his life to protect her from ever feeling pain again.

Yet, as he instinctively took a single step toward her, Shaya clung to his arm.

"Kaelen, my stomach... it hurts," Shaya whimpered.

She expertly leveraged her terminal illness. She leaned her entire body weight against his side, forcing him to support her. Her face twisted into a mask of fragile agony, ensuring he could not take another step toward the girl bleeding on the stage.

Kaelen forced down his surging guilt. He rationalized the situation in his calculating mind. Nara was young and perfectly healthy. She possessed the resilience to bounce back and would easily recover from this public humiliation. Shaya, however, was dying. Her days were numbered. He convinced himself that he could not deny a dying woman her final moments of glory on the stage. Steeling his handsome features into a mask of ice, he leaned into the microphone.

"Shaya is my designer. She is Aura, the chief designer of Kardos Global," he declared.

A silent tear slipped down Nara's cheek. The drop of moisture traced a path over her pale skin, gathering at her chin before hitting the cold floor. Even after discovering his secret marriage, she had desperately tried to protect the sanctity of their five shared years. She had tried to hold onto the memory of the man who had pulled her from the darkness of the Vance family basement. Only now, staring into his indifferent eyes, did she realize what a pathetic fool she was.

Emboldened by Kaelen's public backing, Shaya pointed a manicured finger at Nara's kneeling form. "Do not just stand there! Strip her, or do I have to do it myself?"

Kaelen swallowed hard. His gaze flicked away from Nara's broken expression, unable to meet the devastation in her eyes.

"If you did not steal anything, you have nothing to hide. Take her backstage and search her," Kaelen barked at the guards.

The guards moved to drag her off the stage, grabbing her bare arms. Nara wrenched herself free from their grip with unexpected feral strength. She shoved the men backward, her chest rising and falling with raw fury as she scrambled to her feet.

"No need!" she sneered, her voice echoing through the massive hall.

She stood tall, refusing to break under the weight of their collective judgment. "If you truly believe I need to be searched, why should I hide backstage like a common criminal? Strip me, right? Fine. I will do it myself."

With a vicious tug, she intentionally tore off the rest of her ruined gown.

Deafening gasps erupted across the hall. The heavy fabric hit the floor with a soft thud, leaving her exposed to the cold air. Nara stood defiantly before the blinding flashes of the cameras in nothing but her minimal black undergarments. Her porcelain skin glowed under the spotlights, fiercely contrasting the horrific lash marks carved across her back and legs. The ugly grid of dead tissue wrapped around her ribs, a monstrous testament to her suffering that she could never wash away.

"Come and search me," she challenged, extending her arms wide to the room.

A cold spike of terror hit Kaelen's chest. The traumatized girl he had carried out of the Vance's basement had never allowed him to see her bare back in the light. She had been terrified of her own reflection, preferring to undress in total darkness and hide beneath the sheets. Yet now, she was exposing her deepest trauma to the entire world without a single flinch. The psychological barrier she was breaking terrified him.

Shaya moved swiftly to twist the dangerous narrative before the crowd could feel any sympathy. "Do not pretend to be a tragic heroine, Nara! My parents kicked you out of our home because you were a diseased tramp. Those brutal scars are just proof of your wild lifestyle. You brought this on yourself!" Shaya proclaimed to the press.

The crowd's initial shock melted into echoing disgust.

"Did she get those from sleeping around?"

"She must have been completely wild to get thrown out."

"How disgusting. To show that off on stage?"

Listening to the murmurs of the reporters, Kaelen stared at Nara. His eyes widened in sudden realization as Shaya's poisonous words took root in his mind.

"So that's where the wounds came from," he muttered.

Nara's blood ran cold. The unadulterated disgust in Kaelen's look hit her with enough force to kill her on the spot. The man who had gently cleaned her bloody wounds now looked at her as if she were a piece of rotting garbage on the street. He actually believed Shaya's lies over his own memories of her innocence.

Turning her gaze to Shaya, Nara saw the exact same sadistic cruelty radiating from the woman's eyes. It was the same sick joy she had seen five years ago in that damp basement when the leather whip first struck her skin.

Nara let out a bone-chilling laugh that silenced the murmuring crowd. "Shaya, just because no one was there to witness the horrific abuse doesn't mean you get to rewrite history. You really think you can spit filth and they will all swallow it?" she declared, her voice ringing with cold vengeance.

Slowly and deliberately, Nara lifted her hand to display the moonlight diamond bracelet. The gems caught the harsh venue light, casting sharp reflections across the dark room.

"If this is truly your design, you must tell the world exactly what the bracelet does," Nara challenged, staring Shaya down.

Absolute silence fell over the venue. The flashing cameras paused. The reporters held their breath, waiting for the golden child of the Vance family to prove her undeniable genius.

Shaya stood cornered and clueless. She darted a panicked glance at Kaelen, her confident facade shattering into sheer terror. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. She had no idea what the jewelry was capable of doing.

Sensing the rapidly escalating tension and Shaya's impending public exposure, Kaelen frowned deeply.

"Stop this right now. Return the bracelet so we can let you leave quietly," he issued an authoritative warning.

Nara let out a small, icy laugh that cut through the heavy tension like a knife. "You two might forgive and forget. But I won't."

She raised her slender wrist under the glaring lights and tapped the center of the diamond bracelet exactly twice.

A sharp, mechanical click sounded through the quiet room.

The diamond centerpiece physically shifted aside. It instantly shot a highly focused blue beam of light straight up into the air. A massive holographic projection burst to life, overriding and illuminating the giant display screen at the front of the venue.

The entire stunned crowd froze in breathless silence as the video began to play.
