The Triton Estate
"There is no logical reason for me to turn down such a generous offer. I will do my best." Vespera kept her voice steady, masking any surprise at the sum.
Kaelen pulled a leather checkbook from his breast pocket. He swiftly wrote out the details, signed his name with sharp strokes, and handed the slip of paper to her.
"Five million dollars upfront, Dr. Larkin. Please take it."
"I will gladly accept." Vespera smiled lightly. She tucked the check into her pocket with nonchalance.
Kaelen found his gaze lingering on her. The confidence radiating from her was magnetic. She was undeniably beautiful, but it was that razor-sharp competence that truly drew his attention. The rumors painted her as the pathetic, disowned foster daughter of the Larkin family. Those rumors were evidently garbage. His curiosity deepened.
Vespera felt the heavy weight of his stare. She looked away, redirecting her focus to the medical charts Aris had abandoned at the foot of Zoran's bed. She flipped through the dense pages, scanning the vital metrics and laboratory results.
"With just these test results, surgery is not possible yet. I will order a comprehensive set of fresh scans later today. Have the nurses administer this specific medication tonight. It will relieve the pain and help stabilize his condition before we operate. As of right now, his body is far too weak to survive the anesthesia. The earliest we can open him up is tomorrow morning." She tapped a line on the chart as she spoke.
Kaelen nodded. "Understood."
Ryker stood quietly near the doorway. He discreetly observed his boss. Kaelen Thorne was a man who ruled the corporate empire with calculated skepticism and cold logic. He never placed his trust in anyone this fast. Yet here he was, following a young stranger's medical directives without a single word of doubt or a demand for a second opinion. This woman possessed an unusual authority.
Vespera closed the medical folder. "That will be all for now. I have operated at Dravos Medical Center in the past, but during my last visit, Cyrus handled all the bureaucratic paperwork for me as an external consultant. Mr. Thorne, I will arrive early tomorrow morning. Please make sure the surgical theater arrangements are handled properly. I do not want anyone interfering with my procedure."
"Consider it done." Kaelen smiled faintly. He knew exactly which incompetent doctors she was referring to.
That shift in his expression softened the harsh, dominant lines of his face. The usual aura of quiet danger surrounding him gave way to a devastating charm. Vespera suppressed a brief flutter of genuine appreciation. He was easily the most striking man she had ever encountered.
She checked the silver watch on her wrist. "I really must go now. Someone is waiting for me at home. I will see you tomorrow, Mr. Thorne. If there is any sudden medical emergency tonight, call me anytime."
She reached into her bag, handed him a business card, and walked out of the VIP room without looking back.
Kaelen stared down at the card in his hand. A slow, unreadable smile curved his lips.
Cyrus pointed a stern finger at him from the neighboring bed. "Kaelen, do not even think about making a move on her. I have grand plans for her to meet my grandson the moment I get discharged from this place. You stay far away from her."
Cyrus had been plotting this exact match since the moment he woke up feeling energized. There was zero chance he would let another powerful family snatch up a medical prodigy like Vespera.
"Cyrus, thank you. If it were not for your intervention today, my grandfather would not have made it." Kaelen slipped the card into his pocket.
Cyrus puffed out his chest with pride, turning his head toward the older man. "Damn right. If those useless hacks had operated on him, Zoran would not have even made it off the table alive. Guess God wants you alive today, old man. You are lucky."
"You talk too damn much. Go away." Zoran rolled his eyes, though the monitor showed his heart rate remained steady.
The two elderly veterans devolved into bickering like a pair of schoolboys over who owed who a life debt.
Kaelen shook his head with quiet amusement. He stepped out into the hallway and motioned for Ryker. "Find out everything you can about Vespera Larkin."
Kaelen thought back to her parting words. If she had just been publicly kicked out of the Larkin household, who exactly was waiting for her at home? His sharp instincts flared. Vespera's background was a puzzle he intended to solve.
"Yes, sir." Ryker gave a curt nod and vanished down the corridor to begin his intelligence gathering.
Vespera took the private elevator down to the expansive ground floor lobby. She assumed the day's drama had finally concluded. She was wrong. Aris was pacing furiously near the glass exit doors.
The moment he spotted her, he lunged forward. His face was twisted into a mask of pure rage.
"Vespera, you ruined everything for me! I will make you pay for this!"
Aris felt his medical career slipping through his fingers. The prestige, the wealth, the Thorne family's favor—all snatched away by the worthless foster sister he had always looked down upon. Logic abandoned him. He charged at her, raising his hand high to grab a fistful of her hair and drag her to the floor.
Before his outstretched fingers could even graze her shoulder, Vespera moved. She shifted her weight with lethal precision. Her left hand shot out, clamping down on his wrist with an iron grip. She pivoted her front foot, dropped her center of gravity, and hauled him up. Aris went flying clean over her shoulder in a flawless martial arts throw.
He crashed onto the polished marble tiles with a brutal thud.
A strangled scream tore from his throat. The impact sent a blinding jolt of agony shooting up his spine. He felt as if every organ in his torso had ruptured. He curled into a pathetic ball on the cold floor, gasping desperately for air between pained moans.
"Vespera, what the hell! You can fight? Since when do you know martial arts?" Aris choked out the words, his eyes wide with shock and fear.
"Are you seriously trying to mess with me?" Vespera casually brushed a speck of invisible dust off her hands. She stared down at him with undisguised disgust. He looked like literal trash discarded on the hospital floor.
She stepped forward and planted the heel of her shoe squarely onto the center of his chest. She pressed down hard.
"When I was still living under the Larkin family roof, I operated under the foolish delusion that we were actual family. I held back. I let you parade around with your unearned arrogance. But now that the truth is out and I know we share zero blood, do you really think I will keep playing the obedient sister?" She shifted more of her body weight onto her foot.
The intense pressure crushed down on Aris's sternum, forcing the remaining oxygen from his lungs. His face rapidly shifted from pale white to an unhealthy shade of purple.
"Let me go! Please!" Aris rasped out, his hands weakly clawing at her ankle.
Vespera did not ease up a fraction of an inch. She leaned forward, her voice dripping with mockery. "Go run home and tell your greedy parents. Every single ounce of prestige, wealth, and status they have been leeching off me for free all these years, I will be taking it all back. Piece by piece. They will have nothing left."
Aris whimpered, tears of pain pricking the corners of his eyes.
"If your pathetic family wants to keep living their sheltered lives, then you had better stay far, far out of my sight. Because the next time you try to raise a hand to me? It will not be this simple. I will break you." Vespera ground her heel down just a fraction harder, savoring his sharp gasp of pain.
Only then did she casually lift her foot and step back.
Aris remained curled up on the cold marble, shivering and clutching his bruised chest. He could not summon the breath to make another sound, let alone utter a threat.
Vespera gave his pathetic form one final, dismissive glance. She turned on her heel and walked out the glass doors with commanding pride.
She remained unaware that Ryker had witnessed the entire brutal encounter from behind a marble pillar. He noted her lethal efficiency, pulling out his phone to add this fascinating development to his boss's dossier.
Soren stood waiting by the black sedan parked outside. He opened the rear door for Vespera as she approached.
Once she slid into the leather seat, Soren cast a quick, evaluating glance at her through the rearview mirror. He had not caught the specific identity of the man writhing on the lobby floor, but he had watched her deliver that ruthless takedown. The sight of her standing over her defeated enemy with such fearless authority ignited a strong spark of respect within him.
She truly possessed the Vane bloodline. The years spent growing up far away from her true heritage, surrounded by mediocrity, had not erased the inherent fire in her veins. She was a natural predator.
Soren merged the heavy vehicle smoothly into the bustling city traffic. He steered them directly toward the most exclusive, heavily guarded residential district in all of Dravos.
Vespera gazed out the tinted window as the city landscape dramatically shifted. The urban skyscrapers faded, replaced by towering iron gates and pristine private roads. Everywhere she looked, opulent villas dotted the lush landscape. Each masterpiece was vastly more luxurious than the last. The Larkin family, despite all their boasting and minor corporate successes, would never have qualified to purchase even a tiny guest house in this neighborhood.
The reality of her situation settled heavily over her. Her biological parents were clearly operating on a vastly different level of wealth and power.
The sedan began a slow, winding ascent up a manicured hill. They finally rolled to a smooth halt at the absolute summit, parking in front of the grandest estate in the entire neighborhood.
Vespera stepped out of the vehicle and stared upward. In the exact center of the sprawling grounds stood a magnificent seaside castle. Its striking blend of modern luxury and classic stone architecture was designed to dominate the skyline. Anyone standing down in the city of Dravos could easily spot this fortress from miles away.
The locals reverently referred to it as the Triton Estate. It commanded a breathtaking view of the crashing ocean waves and stood proudly at the peak of Aurelian Heights. It was universally recognized as the single most prestigious plot of land in the entire city. Persistent rumors claimed the mysterious family residing here traced their elite lineage back hundreds of years, representing a dynasty of true power.
Vespera felt a rare flicker of shock. She could hardly believe Soren had driven her to this specific legendary location.
Soren closed his driver's side door and offered her a warm, polite smile. He noted her stunned silence.
"Ms. Vane, shall we go in?"
"Alright." Vespera quickly masked her surprise. She had navigated high-stakes environments and witnessed immense luxury before in her professional life. She gave a firm nod, adjusted the strap of her bag, and followed Soren toward the towering double doors of the main entrance.
As they walked up the wide stone steps, Vespera noticed the staff. Two straight lines of uniformed servants stood at strict attention on either side of the grand entrance.
The very second her shoe touched the top step, the entire line bowed deeply in perfect synchronization.
"Welcome home, Ms. Vane." The chorus of voices echoed loudly across the quiet courtyard.
Vespera blinked. Home? This behemoth of a property felt vastly more like a royal palace than a place people casually lived in. The scale of the estate was intimidating.
Just as she prepared to cross the threshold and meet the people who claimed to be her true family, the low purr of a heavy engine broke the silence. A sleek, midnight-black Maybach glided up the driveway and parked directly behind Soren's vehicle.
Vespera turned her head, puzzled by the sudden arrival. She watched as a young woman, draped elegantly from head to toe in the latest high-end designer brands, stepped gracefully out of the luxurious back seat.
Soren froze mid-step. His usual professional composure slipped for a fraction of a second. "Ziva?"
Ziva Vane was the biological child of Vivienne Vane's late sister. Years ago, when Vivienne received the devastating news that her own infant daughter had allegedly perished in a horrific hospital fire, the grief nearly destroyed her mind. Shortly after that tragedy, Vivienne's sister passed away due to severe complications during childbirth. That back-to-back double loss shattered Vivienne's spirit.
Desperate to anchor his wife to reality, Alistair Vane formally adopted the orphaned newborn, Ziva. Raising the child became the sole focus that eventually pulled Mrs. Vane out of her deep depression. For her entire life, Ziva had happily called Alistair and Vivienne Mom and Dad. High society and the household staff treated her exactly like the true, undisputed heiress of the Vane empire.
But the truth had finally surfaced. Vespera had never died in those flames. The babies had simply been switched at birth in the chaotic hospital ward.
Now, the true biological daughter and the cherished adopted daughter stood face-to-face in the grand driveway. The impending collision of their worlds was bound to spark a massive domestic firestorm.
Ziva remained blissfully oblivious to Soren's rigid posture and the heavy tension filling the air. She swung her designer handbag over her shoulder and smiled playfully at the man.
"Well, this was supposed to be a surprise. Soren, how did you find out I came back early?"
