The Million-Dollar Offer
Zoran managed a weak, yet genuine smile. The alarming gray pallor had faded from his weathered skin, replaced by a steady flush of returning circulation. He looked up at the young woman standing over his hospital bed. "Vespera, you truly have incredible skills. On the way here, I genuinely thought today was my last day on earth. I had accepted it. I did not even have the strength left to speak a single final word to my family. To think that a mere ten minutes of your unconventional treatment pulled me right back from the brink... it is nothing short of miraculous."
Vespera maintained her absolute professionalism. She picked up a sterile white cloth, took her time wiping down her delicate silver needles one by one, and began sliding them securely back into her soft leather kit. "You are flattering me. My intervention has successfully stabilized your condition, which improves your statistical odds for the necessary upcoming surgery. If you had been rushed into the operating room in your previous, critical state, your chances of survival would have been a dismal twenty percent at best."
Aris watched this undeniable success unfold from the sidelines. His expression darkened, consumed by a bitter, raging jealousy that twisted his features. He refused to accept defeat at the hands of a young, disowned girl. He lunged forward, pointing a rigid finger at her. "How can you be so sure it is twenty percent? Are you even a legitimate doctor? I will report you for illegal medical practice right now. I demand to know if you even possess a medical degree!"
Amused by his desperate flailing, Vespera retrieved her smartphone from her pocket. She tapped the illuminated screen a few times, pulled up a high-resolution digital copy of a gleaming, certified medical license, and shoved the bright screen into Aris's line of sight. "Dr. Larkin, this is the exact license you have spent your entire life dreaming of earning. Take a close look at the official seals. I secured mine three full years ago. You can try reporting me, but I doubt you will ever get the opportunity to do so."
Aris froze in his tracks. His eyes darted across the digital document, searching for a flaw or a sign of tampering. "No way. That has to be a forgery. There is no way you earned this."
Cyrus sneered at Aris's disgraceful, petty character. He stepped closer, towering over the younger doctor with an imposing stance. "You cannot match her extraordinary skills, so you resort to pathetic slander instead? A doctorate degree does not mean a thing when your character remains an utter disgrace to the medical field."
Aris choked on his own venom. He was far too intimidated by the combined physical presence of Cyrus and the irrefutable digital proof glaring at him from the phone screen to continue arguing. The other medical staff shifted uncomfortably, eager to defuse the mounting tension in the high-tech VIP ward. A senior nurse stepped forward with a clipboard. "Dr. Larkin, let us just focus on Mr. Thorne's stabilized condition for now."
Vespera considered her immediate part in the emergency concluded. She snapped her leather kit shut and slung her bag over her shoulder. She turned her attention back to Cyrus. "I have done my part and stabilized him. The rest is up to the hospital staff now. Someone is waiting for me downstairs, and I do not want to keep Soren waiting any longer. I will take my leave."
She strode toward the doorway, ready to exit the stifling hospital room. However, a commanding, broad-shouldered figure stepped right into the frame, physically blocking her exit path. It was Kaelen Thorne. The harsh ambient lighting caught the sharp angles of his jaw as his piercing gaze locked intensely onto her. "Vespera? Please stay."
Upon recognizing the powerful Mr. Thorne, Aris shifted gears. He rushed forward in a desperate, pathetic attempt to steal the credit for stabilizing the old man. He needed this prestigious connection to the Thorne family to secure his future career. "Mr. Thorne, you are here! Mr. Thorne's condition has stabilized for now. Next, we will wait for the rest of the test results and plan the surgery in detail. Please do not worry. I will be performing the operation myself, and I can assure you he is in the best possible hands."
Kaelen exuded an aura of freezing authority. He ignored Aris's existence. He did not spare the frantic doctor a single passing glance. His unwavering attention remained fixated on the disowned Larkin daughter standing before him. "I have been meaning to meet Cyrus's attending doctor. I did not expect we would cross paths today. This must be a stroke of fate. I would like you to personally handle my grandfather's impending, high-risk surgery. Name your price."
Aris was shocked to his core. He was desperate to salvage this fast-slipping chance of a lifetime to become the lead surgeon for the prestigious Thorne family. He waved his hands to grab attention. "Mr. Thorne, you already told Director Evander Baine that I would be in charge of this operation! I hold a medical PhD. I am Professor Linden's star student!"
Kaelen continued to treat the noisy doctor like empty air.
Aris's fragile ego shattered into pieces. He snapped, pointing a trembling, accusatory finger at Vespera. "Are you doing this out of spite because you were kicked out of the Larkin family? Mr. Thorne, she is a vindictive undergraduate! Her medical license is forged! You cannot trust a single word she says!"
Kaelen had lost whatever microscopic sliver of patience he possessed for the obnoxious man. He gave a slight nod to his men stationed in the hall.
His trained assistant, Ryker, materialized in the doorway. With ruthless efficiency, Ryker grabbed Aris, twisted his arm painfully up behind his back, and shoved him toward the exit. "Watch your mouth and get out."
Aris stumbled out the door. He crashed face-first into the hard hallway wall with a loud, sickening thud. The healers who had followed him looked mortified, scrambling out of the VIP room to help the disgraced doctor peel himself off the floor. Behind them, Ryker firmly pulled the heavy wooden door shut, clearing the room of any lingering annoyances.
Vespera watched Aris get physically dragged away. This was the golden boy who had strutted around her family's house with unearned superiority for over a decade. Seeing him get humiliated in public improved her mood. A genuine smirk graced her lips as she turned her attention back to Kaelen. "Alright. I can perform the surgery. But I must warn you, my surgical fees are far from cheap."
Kaelen did not hesitate for a microsecond. "Three million dollars upfront for the surgery alone. Furthermore, if you can successfully restore my grandfather to the vibrant health Cyrus currently enjoys, you will receive an additional five million dollar completion bonus."
Zoran's eyes widened on the hospital bed. He had never expected his grandson to drop such a staggering sum just to save his aging life. However, he was in no shape to argue about finances. He knew perfectly well that without Vespera's swift intervention earlier, he would already be a corpse on a metal table.
Cyrus chuckled at Kaelen's sheer boldness with his vast wealth. "That is Kaelen for you, always bold with his money. But honestly, Vespera's extraordinary skills are worth every single penny of that offer."
Finding the financial offer fair and highly lucrative, Vespera gave a short nod. "I accept. Since we are now technically acquaintances, I can offer you a small discount on the final bill. Zoran's specific heart condition is significantly more complicated to repair than Cyrus's earlier ailments."
Cyrus was taken aback by the casual revelation. He crossed his arms over his chest. "Wait, Zoran's case is tougher than mine? Well, I suppose that tracks. He once took a serious hit back in the day just to save me on the battlefield."
Kaelen simply smiled. He waved away the very notion of a discount with a casual display of immense wealth. "There is no need for any discounts. Vespera, as long as you can get my grandpa back on his feet, fifteen million is no problem at all."
