Begging for Mother's Life

The devastating truth finally registered in my mind, dropping like a lead weight in the pit of my stomach. It all made sense now. As I stared at the guilt etched deeply into Zane's face, the blindfold was brutally ripped from my eyes. I could see the signs I had spent the last thirty days ignoring. The late-night meetings with the Alpha triplets that stretched longer and happened far more often than they ever used to. The faint, unfamiliar scent of sweet, floral perfume clinging to his shirts when he crawled into our bed. The vibrant smear of red lipstick I found on his collar just last week, which he had laughed off as a clumsy accident at the pack house. For an entire month, my boyfriend had been hiding his fated mate from me. He had found Vanessa, claimed her in the shadows, and gotten her pregnant while still playing the role of my devoted lover.

"So this whole time... this past month, you have been cheating on me with her? You found your mate and hid it from me? Is that what you are telling me right now?" I stared at him, my voice trembling as the betrayal tore through my chest.

Zane lowered his head in profound shame. He refused to meet my gaze, looking flustered and cornered. "I did not know she was pregnant. I swear to you, Elara, I had no idea about the baby."

"But you know now. So what are you going to do? Cut ties with her... or lose our child?" Vanessa stepped forward, her voice sharp and commanding, instantly cutting off his pathetic excuses.

Both of us turned to look at her. She stood tall, her hands planted firmly on her hips, her red lips curled into a deep, furious frown as she glared at the man who was supposed to be mine. My lungs constricted in pure, suffocating panic. I watched her face, terrified by just how far she was willing to go to force Zane into cutting me off. We were never best friends, but I used to consider Vanessa a decent acquaintance. We had hung out together a few times in the past. But the moment tragedy struck my family, the moment the pack deemed me unworthy of their social class, she had distanced herself like everyone else.

But threatening to stop the payments keeping my dying mother alive? This went beyond standard pack politics. This was pure cruelty. She knew exactly what those payments meant. She knew the hospital machines were the only things forcing air into my mother's lungs. Without that money, the administration would pull the plug and my mother would die before the week was over. What did I ever do to her to deserve this kind of calculated malice? Hot, relentless tears spilled over my eyelashes and burned a path down my cheeks. My shoulders shook as I lowered my head, the crushing reality of the situation settling over me. There was no way Zane would continue paying for my mother’s care when his unborn child was placed on the chopping block.

Zane turned toward his mate. He took a desperate step forward, reaching his hand out as if to soothe a wild animal. "Vanessa, please. Please be reasonable. Aunt is the only person Elara has left in this world. The hospital bills are astronomical, and she cannot afford them alone. If she is left on her own, Aunt will die. I promise to cut off all ties with her. I will never speak to her again. But do not make me do this. Do not make me stop the funds."

Vanessa yanked her hand out of his reach. Her upper lip curled into a vicious snarl, her eyes burning with sheer jealousy and hatred. "What does that have to do with me? Why do I always have to be the one who acts understanding? Why should I care about her?" She pointed a trembling, accusing finger in my direction. "I cannot believe that for a whole month, I let you hide me in the dark because you did not want to hurt her precious little feelings! You kept saying it was not the right time to tell her, that her mother’s health was declining. Enough is enough. I am your mate. I will never be the other woman. So it is your choice, Zane. You either cut off all ties with her right now, or we reject each other and lose this pup!"

Zane stammered, stumbling backward as if physically struck. The threat to his unborn child paralyzed him. He looked taken aback, clearly blind to the depths of her rage. "But... I..."

He could not finish the sentence. He could not find a single word to fight her. The silence in the room threatened to suffocate me, and in that agonizing pause, I made the hardest decision of my life. My mother desperately needed her upcoming surgery. It might not cure her, but it would buy her enough time for me to find a skilled witch doctor. If I lost Zane’s financial support today, I lost the only family I had left. My waitressing job paid barely enough to cover rent; I could never raise the surgical fees in time.

I cast aside the very last shred of my dignity.

My legs buckled beneath me, and I sank to the cold, unforgiving floor. The impact sent a sharp pain shooting up my knees, but I ignored it. Trembling from head to toe, I placed my hands on the polished tiles and crawled. I dragged my shaking body across the ground, lowering myself like a defeated animal until I was mere inches from Vanessa’s shoes.

I caught her off guard. She stared down at me in shock as I slowly lifted my hands, clasping my palms together in a desperate, silent prayer. Tears blurred my vision, streaming down my face as I looked up at the woman who had spent the last month sleeping in my boyfriend's arms. Ever since my eighteenth birthday, my life had been nothing but a cruel, unending joke. But no matter how much pain the universe threw at me, I refused to let my mother die.

"Please, Vanessa. I am begging you. Do not do this to me. I know you are upset, and you have every right to be angry. But I promise on my life, I will cut all ties with Zane. I will walk away and never look back. Just please do not let him stop the payments." My voice cracked, breaking into a pathetic, desperate sob. "My mom needs this surgery. He does not even have to give me the money for free. I swear to the Goddess I will work and pay him back every single cent. So please, I am begging you to have a little mercy. Do not do this to us."

Zane turned his face toward the wall. He squeezed his eyes shut and clenched his hands into tight fists at his sides, incapable of watching me debase myself for his charity.

Vanessa narrowed her eyes, studying my tear-streaked face. Then, in the blink of an eye, her expression shifted. The anger melted away, replaced by pure delight. The corner of her mouth twitched into a cruel, mocking smirk. She loved this. She was enjoying the sight of me kneeling in the dirt at her feet. She took a deliberate step closer, placing her hands on her hips as she gazed down at me like a queen inspecting a peasant.

"Aww, this is really sad, and I truly feel sorry for you, Elara," she cooed, her voice dripping with fake, sugary sweetness. She trailed a hand down to her stomach, rubbing her pregnant belly with a triumphant stroke. "But I am not the one who makes that decision. That is Zane’s choice to make. Right, mate? What will you choose?"

She did not need to ask. Her tone was brimming with supreme confidence. She already knew what choice he was going to make.

The agonizing seconds ticked by. I held my breath, keeping my clasped hands raised, praying for a miracle that would never come. Zane let out a long, ragged sigh of frustration. I watched as the tension bled out of his frame. His tightly clenched fists slowly unfurled. He had made his choice.

Fresh tears flooded my eyes, blurring the sterile hospital lights into a harsh glare. My chest heaved as my body was wracked with heavy, painful sobs. I pressed a trembling hand over my mouth, trying to hold in the sound of my breaking heart.

"Elara... I am really sorry, but this is my child. I cannot do it." His voice was a weak, pathetic whisper.

"Of course you cannot. Of course you cannot reject your mate when she is pregnant." I cut him off with a harsh, bitter laugh that scraped against my throat.

I placed my hands on the freezing tiles and forced my shaking legs to stand. My muscles screamed in protest, feeling far too weak to support my own weight, but I refused to stay on my knees a second longer. Any other werewolf in his position would have made the exact same choice. I had been foolish and selfish to hope otherwise. The mate bond was an absolute law of nature, and blood would always come first.

I drew in a deep, shaky breath, letting the cold air fill my lungs. I reached up and wiped the wetness from my face, forcing myself to look him in the eye. I locked my gaze onto those familiar blue eyes that I once thought held my entire future.

In that fleeting moment, the veil was finally lifted. I saw it. I saw the exact emotion swirling in the depths of his blue irises, and the realization hit me harder than a physical blow.

It was pity.

My mind raced backward, replaying every pivotal moment of our relationship. When the tragedy first struck and my family lost everything overnight... when the medical bills started piling up in a mountain of debt and he stepped in to pay them without hesitation... when he held my tear-stained face in his hands and whispered those beautiful, hollow lies in the dark. *I love you. I will never leave you. You are enough for me.* It was always this exact same look staring back at me. The look a person gives a wounded, starving animal freezing in the snow. Zane never loved me. He pitied the poor, tragic girl who had nothing left. He played the role of the noble savior, and I was the blind fool who believed it.

"Elara..." Zane stepped toward me, his hand reaching out once more.

I shook my head, taking a firm step backward to keep out of his reach. "Do not say anything. Please." I swiped another stray tear from my cheek, standing as tall as my battered pride allowed. "Even if all you have done is hurt me in the end, I am still thankful for the help you gave my family all these years. You kept my mother alive when no one else would. So... thank you, Zane. And congratulations on becoming a father."

I turned my back on them and walked toward the exit. I did not look back at the man who broke me. I did not look back at the woman who replaced me. I pushed through the heavy doors and stepped directly into the raging storm outside.

The heavy rain crashed down from the black sky, instantly soaking through my clothes and chilling my skin. The freezing wind howled in my ears, but beneath the noise of the storm, I heard him.

"Elara..." His voice was a fragile, haunting whisper carrying through the open doors.

But I knew the truth. He would not follow.
