Zane's Ultimate Betrayal

First Person POV.

What is the ultimate form of betrayal? It is a simple, crushing truth. It is when the one person you loved, trusted, and built your entire world around becomes the very instrument of your destruction. It is standing in a brightly lit, sterile hospital corridor, inhaling the sharp scent of bleach and medicine, while the man who swore to protect you guts you without a weapon.

Right now, I was living that exact nightmare.

My boyfriend of four years stood before me. He stood steady and resolute, his broad shoulders squared, delivering words that tore my reality to shreds. He wanted to throw me away. He wanted to discard our shared history for a woman he claimed to have just met the day before.

I stood rooted to the linoleum floor, frozen in a suffocating haze. The fluorescent lights overhead buzzed, a harsh and grating sound that barely cut through the ringing in my ears. I heard the syllables leaving his mouth, yet my brain refused to process the meaning. Nothing he said made sense. My chest tightened until it felt like a steel band was wrapping around my ribs, squeezing the air from my lungs.

"Elara, you need to understand. I know I promised to mark you as my mate when we get married, but that was before I met Vanessa yesterday. She is my real mate, and I cannot ignore the bond between us. I cannot reject her. I am sorry, but I have to break up with you." He spoke with a steady, measured tone, as if he were simply canceling a dinner reservation rather than tearing my heart out.

A single tear broke free, tracking a scalding path down my numb cheek. I sucked in a sharp, jagged breath. I could not breathe.

Zane had found his fated mate.

The day I had dreaded, the terrifying shadow that loomed over every wolf without a mate, had finally arrived. He was casting me aside. Yet the cruelest twist of the knife was that she was right here. She stood flush against his side, cradled within his arms as he looked me in the eyes and ended us.

I had always known this was a biological possibility. Werewolves lived by the decree of the Moon Goddess, bound by a pull so primal it defied reason. But I had chosen to live in a delusion. I had trusted his words. Over the years, Zane had looked into my eyes time and time again, swearing that even if his fated mate crossed his path, his love for me would triumph. He promised he would choose me. He promised he would never leave me behind.

It took less than twenty-four hours for a feral biological urge to erase four years of history.

My fingernails dug crescent moons into the flesh of my palms. I forced my chin up, refusing to let him see me crumble into dust right away. My gaze shifted from his guilt-ridden face to the woman pressed against his ribs.

Vanessa. A woman who, in another lifetime, before my existence descended into a waking nightmare, used to be my friend. We had shared secrets. We had laughed together. Now, her beautiful cascade of fiery red hair fell over her shoulders, framing a face twisted into a mask of faux pity. She looked at me the way one might look at roadkill. But beneath those wide, sympathetic eyes, I caught the slight, unmistakable upward tilt of her plush lips.

She was enjoying this. She reveled in watching my destruction.

My gaze slid downward, snagging on the pale skin of her neck, and the last surviving piece of my heart stopped beating.

There, sitting pretty against her scent gland, was a fresh, raw bite mark.

The skin around the puncture wounds was a bruised, angry purple. The tissue was still swollen, the indentations of his canine teeth deep and permanent. He had not just met her and felt a pull. He had taken her to bed, laid his body over hers, and unleashed his teeth into her flesh. He had claimed her in the physical, messy, irrevocable way of our kind. He had fucked her, tasted her blood, and sealed their souls together while I sat at home, oblivious and waiting for him.

"Elara." Zane took a hesitant step forward, reaching his hands out toward me. His eyes were shadowed with guilt, yet beneath it lay an immovable resolution. "I know you are hurt right now, but you know rejecting my fated mate would anger my inner wolf. It would drive him feral. I cannot risk the uncontrollable pull and go against my nature..."

"I do not care about the mate bond, my love! I do not care if the mate bond affects me! The love we have is more than some mystical bond. I would never leave you! I want us to be together, to grow old together and have little pups who look like us!" I screamed his own ancient promises back at him, my voice cracking and echoing down the barren hospital hallway.

He had fed me those exact sentences. He had poured those sweet lies into my ears for years.

"So do not worry. Do not think about it. I would never betray you." I dropped my voice into a broken whisper, mirroring the exact tone he used in the dark of my bedroom. The hot tears broke through my defenses, flowing in an endless, blinding stream.

"Elara..." Zane breathed out, his fingers brushing against the fabric of my sleeve.

I ripped my hands out of his grip with enough force to snap a tendon. The mere brush of his skin sent a wave of physical nausea crashing through my stomach. The hands I had kissed, the hands I had held during my darkest nights, now felt like branding irons. They were dirty. They had touched her, gripped her hips, and held her down while he marked her. The phantom sensation of his touch disgusted me to my core.

"Yet all it took was one single night to throw away everything you said to me for four years, Zane! Four years of promises, and you forgot every single word just to spread her legs, sleep with her, and sink your teeth into her neck!"

I threw myself forward. I raised my fists and slammed them into the solid wall of his chest. Bone met muscle in a hollow thud. I struck him again, letting out a raw, shredded wail that tore at my throat. I pounded my knuckles against his sternum, seeking some kind of physical release for the suffocating agony expanding in my chest.

Zane did not block my hands. He did not grab my wrists or push me back. He stood like a stone pillar, lowering his head and locking his jaw, taking every punch in silence. His silence was worse than a shouted defense. It was the silence of a guilty man who knew he was a coward.

"Why, Zane? Why did you have to reassure me every single time? Why did you make me trust you when you were always going to betray me anyway? Why did you string me along? Why?!"

I shoved my palms hard against his chest, sending myself staggering backward. My knees gave out. I hit the hard linoleum floor, the impact sending a dull ache up my shins, but it meant nothing compared to the bleeding crater in my chest. I folded into myself, choking on harsh, ugly sobs as the sterile hospital corridor blurred around me.

He had been my anchor.

After my father was slaughtered. After my mother destroyed her own body. Zane remained the only tether keeping me attached to the world of the living. To be betrayed by the one man who held the pieces of my fragile existence was a wound too deep for anger. I wanted to hate him. I wanted to feel a burning, righteous fury. But beneath the screaming and the tears, I was just fundamentally, hopelessly broken.

"Please do not be upset, Elara."

A sickeningly sweet, high-pitched voice cut through my weeping. The sharp, rhythmic clicking of stiletto heels echoed against the floor tiles, approaching my curled-up form.

"I know you have every right to be upset, but this really is not Zane's fault, you know? You understand how strong the mate bond is, right? When Zane and I locked eyes, we could not control it. We just had to mate. It was a primal necessity. We could not stop the mating process." Vanessa paused, her shadow falling over me.

"But I guess it is something you would not really understand... since you are a wolfless pariah."

My sobs stalled in my throat. I lifted my heavy head, glaring at her through the wet, blurred shield of my eyelashes. My fingers curled into tight fists against the floorboards.

She knew exactly where to aim the knife. She had zeroed in on my deepest, darkest trauma and twisted the blade without hesitation.

I was not born a pariah. My father was a man of honor, the esteemed Beta of the Blackspire Pack. Three years ago, he marched alongside our late Alpha into a brutal war against a legion of rabid rogues. They fought to protect our lands, our families, our future.

They did not march back holding trophies of victory. They returned in heavy, sealed body bags.

The sight of my father's shredded corpse broke my mother's mind. The grief consumed her in an instant. On that very same day, unable to bear a life without her mate, she got her hands on concentrated wolfsbane. It was a potent, agonizing poison designed to rot a werewolf from the inside out. She drank it down.

She did not die. The poison ravaged her nervous system and threw her into a deep, unending coma. For three years, her fragile life had hung by a singular thread, sustained by the endless beep of hospital machines in the room just down this very hallway.

And that day of blood and poison? That was my eighteenth birthday.

It was the sacred day my wolf was meant to awaken, to speak to me, to grant me the strength of my bloodline. But the sheer volume of psychological terror and grief annihilated the connection before it could even form. According to the myriad of desperate witch doctors I begged for help, the shock severed my bond. My wolf died in the dark. I never heard her voice. I never felt my bones shift. I was left human, hollow, and weak in a world dominated by apex predators.

Ever since I drained the last coin of my family's fortune seeking magical cures for my mother, Zane had stepped in. Our fathers had been close. Zane and I were already in love. He took over the astronomical hospital bills, keeping the machines pumping air into my mother's lungs.

"You know, it is actually pathetic how you thought you could hold onto my mate," Vanessa sneered, her voice dripping in mockery. "Even when he grew to become the Beta of the most powerful pack, and you remained a broken, wolfless nobody. I suppose you only have your own delusion to blame."

She was right about his power. After our fathers died in the dirt, the late Alpha's three formidable sons—the Alpha triplets—seized command of the Blackspire Pack. Since I had no brother to inherit the Beta title, the mantle passed down to Zane. He rose in rank, glory, and wealth, while I scrubbed floors and prayed over my unmoving mother.

"What are you doing? Why are you still trying to be nice to her, Zane?" Vanessa snapped, turning her harsh glare away from me and fixing it onto him. "Did you not tell me you never loved her? Did you not swear you only stayed out of pure, disgusting pity? I refuse to feel like I am the other woman when I am your destined mate and she is nothing!"

Zane flinched beneath her gaze. He shifted his weight, his eyes darting to my tear-streaked face before he quickly stared at the ceiling, a coward unable to withstand the judgment in my eyes.

A ragged scoff climbed up my throat. I bit down on my bottom lip, my teeth breaking the skin until the metallic taste of copper flooded my tongue. Pity. It had all been pity.

"Vanessa, stop." Zane reached out to grab her arm, but she slapped his hand away and crossed her arms over her chest.

"I do not care anymore! I am done listening to your excuses. You promised me you would cut all ties with this pathetic girl. You are going to start right now. You will stop paying for her mother's hospital bills this instant."

The cold air in the hallway vanished. The world ground to a terrifying halt. My heart missed a beat.

He could lie to me. He could sleep with another woman. He could shatter my heart and spit on our memories. But he could not cut the funds. He knew what that meant. The hospital board had warned me explicitly—the moment those payments stopped, they would pull the plug. My mother would suffocate in her own bed.

Zane stared at Vanessa, his jaw dropping in shock.

"Vanessa, I cannot do that to Aunt. If I pull the funding, Elara has no money. Her mother will not survive," Zane pleaded, a desperate edge bleeding into his tone.

A fleeting, pathetic sense of relief washed over my panicked mind. For a split second, I saw a ghost of the man who had loved me. The man who cared about my mother.

But Vanessa was ruthless.

"All right then, fine!" Vanessa bared her teeth in a snarl. "If you refuse to do it, then let us sever the bond right now. Let us reject each other in front of her! But you know the cost, Zane. The rejection will kill the child I am carrying in my womb!"

My breath hitched in my throat. My lungs froze.

Zane staggered backward, his boots squeaking against the polished floor. "Did you just say... child?"

I turned my head. I looked at the triumphant, vicious smirk stretching across Vanessa's beautiful face. The words felt like ground glass sliding out of my mouth.

"If you are pregnant..."

Vanessa lifted her chin, staring down at me from her towering vantage point.

"Yes, Elara. Yesterday was not the first time we met. Yesterday was not the first time we realized we were mates. We have been seeing each other, sleeping together in secret, for a whole month. Zane did not want to tell you because he was too much of a coward to hurt your feelings. But I am pregnant with his bloodline. So... what are you going to do about it?"

A month.

I clamped my hands over my ears. I squeezed my eyes shut, desperate to block out the venom pouring from her smiling mouth.

"You are lying. You are lying..." I whispered, oxygen refusing to enter my lungs.

I forced my eyes open. I looked at the man I had worshipped. I waited for him to shout at her. I waited for him to call her a liar, to swear he had not spent the last thirty days smiling in my face while burying himself between her thighs.

Zane did not shout. Zane did not defend me.

He lowered his head. A dark, ugly shadow of immense guilt and deep shame settled permanently over his features. He could not look at me.

A quiet gasp punched out of my chest.

It was not a lie. Every single word was the truth.
