The Abandoned Bride

The deafening applause of the grand ballroom washed over the newly minted couple, a stark contrast to the hollow vows exchanged at the altar minutes prior. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm, opulent glow across the extravagant reception, illuminating the elite guests of the Vitiello and Marchetti syndicates. Alessia sat rigid at the head table. The heavy platinum band on her finger felt like a shackle pulling her hand down. Beside her, Valerio sat in brooding silence, his attention focused solely on the glowing screen of his mobile phone.

She kept her gaze fixed on the pristine white tablecloth. She did not dare to look at him directly, but from the corner of her eye, she saw his jaw clench. The sharp lines of his face darkened into a stormy scowl. He brought the phone to his ear, his knuckles turning white.

Without a single glance in her direction, Valerio pushed his chair back. He stood up and strode away from the table, his strides long and urgent, still deeply engaged in the hushed phone call. He disappeared through the massive oak double doors, leaving Alessia anchored to her seat.

A few minutes ticked by. The murmurs in the ballroom grew louder, buzzing like a hive of angry hornets. A cheerful voice boomed over the speakers, announcing the highly anticipated first dance for the newlywed couple. The spotlight swiveled, sweeping across the dance floor before landing squarely on the grand table.

It illuminated a bride sitting by herself.

The groom was nowhere to be found. A thick, oppressive silence descended over the room. Alessia shrank under the blinding light, lowering her head as her cheeks burned with excruciating embarrassment. The whispers started immediately, rippling through the crowd. She could feel the weight of a hundred pitying and mocking stares crawling over her skin. It was a familiar isolation. She had spent her life being pushed aside, treated as an afterthought or a burden. Finding herself abandoned on her own wedding day was a tragic confirmation of her lack of worth.

Rosa Marchetti navigated through the whispering guests with a deeply disappointed frown creasing her elegant features. She stopped beside Alessia, her expression softening into a rare, genuine gentleness that caught the young bride off guard.

Rosa placed a comforting hand on Alessia's trembling shoulder. "Alessia, dear. I am afraid Valerio had to attend to an urgent matter and will not be able to join us. I am here to personally take you to your new home. You must be exhausted from the ceremony, so please rest and make yourself comfortable."

The unexpected shred of respect warmed Alessia’s chest. She nodded, swallowing the thick lump of humiliation in her throat, and allowed Rosa to guide her away from the suffocating stares of the ballroom.

They walked out to the driveway where a bridal car waited, heavily decorated with white roses. Rosa helped her gather the layers of her cumbersome dress and settle into the back seat. The door clicked shut. She watched Rosa wave goodbye through the tinted glass. As the driver put the car in gear, she realized she was riding into her new life solitary and abandoned.

The car glided through the dark streets, eventually pulling through the towering iron gates of the Marchetti estate. The mansion was massive and intimidating, a sprawling fortress of cold stone. The driver opened the door, and Alessia stepped onto the pavement, making her way toward the grand entrance.

A queue of servants stood in the grand foyer, ready to welcome the newlyweds. The moment they registered that the bride was walking through the doors unaccompanied, their welcoming smiles faltered. Their faces fell into expressions of deep pity. The subtle shift felt like a physical blow to her chest. Desperately masking her profound humiliation, Alessia kept her chin tucked and offered a fractured, polite smile.

A senior maid stepped forward and led her up the sweeping staircase, guiding her through the winding corridors to the master bedroom. The maid bowed and shut the door, leaving Alessia alone.

The space was a stark, intimidating domain dominated by masculine greys and pristine whites. A massive flat-screen television hung across from the king-sized bed, flanked by a gaming setup that felt alien to her. It was a room that clearly belonged to a powerful man, and she was merely a trespasser in his sanctuary.

A sudden surge of dread washed over her when she realized her luggage was missing. The prospect of sleeping in her heavy wedding dress weighed on her. The corset dug into her ribs, and the stiff tulle scratched at her legs. She turned her gaze toward the luxurious walk-in closet.

She walked over and peeked inside. The massive closet was lined with custom suits and crisp button-down shirts. A simple cotton t-shirt sat folded on a lower shelf. She reached her hand out, contemplating borrowing it just for the night so she could breathe.

Her fingers froze an inch from the fabric. A lifetime of severe neglect crashed over her. She remembered the brutal punishments for overstepping her boundaries. She had only ever survived on discarded items. Taking something that belonged to someone else was a cardinal sin that resulted in pain. The trauma paralyzed her. She yanked her hand back, terrified to lay a single finger on her new husband's pristine belongings.

Accepting her grim reality, she turned away from the closet. She climbed onto the very edge of the vast mattress. She curled into a tight ball, suffocating under the heavy layers of the intricate gown. Exhaustion dragged at her bones. Despite the biting discomfort, she closed her eyes and succumbed to a restless slumber.

The ominous creak of the bedroom door shattered the silence.

Alessia jolted awake, her heart hammering against her ribs. The room was plunged in dead-of-night darkness. Panic spiked through her veins. She blindly fumbled along the nightstand, her fingers frantic until they brushed against the bedside lamp switch. She pressed it down.

Warm light flooded the corner of the room. Valerio loomed near the doorway, casting a terrifying, long shadow across the carpet.

He looked miserable and disheveled. His suit jacket was gone. His tie hung loosely around his neck, and his crisp dress shirt was carelessly unbuttoned, exposing the smooth expanse of his chest. The sharp scent of expensive liquor drifted across the room. His cloudy gaze scanned the space before locking onto Alessia.

When he saw her occupying his bed, his stormy eyes darkened with pure, unadulterated fury.

In three long, aggressive strides, he crossed the bedroom. Alessia scrambled backward, but she was tangled in the heavy tulle of her dress. Valerio lunged forward and seized her chin. His large fingers dug into her delicate skin in a punishing, painful grip that made her gasp.

"How dare you sleep on my bed, bloody whore?" he sneered. His deep, menacing tone dripped with pure venom.

The vile insult hit her like a physical strike, sending a harsh shiver through her frail body. The degrading word forcefully unearthed the traumatic memories of her past abusers. She saw the raised fists of her father and heard the cruel taunts. The anxiety mounted rapidly in her chest, suffocating her. She dreaded the violence she knew was certain to come.

"I... I a.. am sorry. Please forgive me." Alessia stammered desperately, her voice cracking under the crushing weight of her fear.

She opened her mouth to attempt to explain about the luggage, to tell him she had nowhere else to go. Valerio did not give her the chance. He shoved her backward. Her spine hit the mattress with a heavy thud. His heavy, masculine frame covered hers, pressing down against her petite body. He pinned her to the bed without a single ounce of mercy, trapping her under his wrath.

Her eyes flared in pure horror. A paralyzing panic consumed her mind as she thrashed against his unyielding hold.

"No, please, let me go," Alessia begged desperately.
