Veil of Deceit
Nadia paused in the opulent hallway of the Vitiello mansion, letting the heavy evening shadows mask the vicious scowl twisting her features. She despised seeing her husband waste his energy stressing over his worthless daughter. Taking a slow, calculated breath, she smoothed the front of her tailored silk dress. She forced the anger down and painted a look of soft, radiant affection across her face before pushing the heavy oak doors open.
Pietro sat hunched behind his massive mahogany desk. The dim glow of a brass reading lamp cast harsh shadows across his lined face. He rubbed his temples, staring blankly at the leather-bound folder resting in front of him.
"What is troubling you, my love? You look exhausted." Nadia closed the door softly and crossed the room, letting her heels click against the hardwood floor.
Pietro looked up. His eyes carried a gloomy, heavy pity that made Nadia’s stomach churn with hidden disgust.
"I am agonizing over this contract and Alessia’s wedding. I hope this proves to be a good decision for her. She shows such strong reluctance to marry Massimo Marchetti’s son."
Nadia walked behind his chair. She placed her hands gently on his tense shoulders, kneading the tight muscles with practiced care. She injected her tone with deep, maternal concern.
"Pietro, darling. We are securing a good future for Alessia. Who else would marry her with her terrible reputation of sleeping around? We are doing what is best for her."
Beneath her sympathetic facade, she cursed her stepdaughter with pure venom. She needed Pietro to stay the course. If she had her way, she would have buried Alessia right alongside her mother years ago. The rumors about Alessia being a loose, shameful woman were not organic whispers. Nadia meticulously orchestrated every single vile story herself. She paid off socialites and planted the fabricated tales in the ears of high society gossips. Her drive came from an ugly, deeply rooted jealousy of Alessia’s beautiful, innocent mother, Rosalia. Rosalia had been a saint, and Nadia hated her for it. Nadia's ultimate, sinister plan was finally coming to fruition. She was going to guarantee that Alessia suffered a literal living hell by shackling her to Valerio Marchetti. Valerio was a ruthless, heartless playboy who ruined women for sport. Alessia would never survive him.
Pietro let out a heavy sigh, releasing the breath like a physical burden. He reached up, taking Nadia’s manicured hand from his shoulder, and held it affectionately against his cheek.
"I never loved Rosalia, and I do not even love Alessia. But she carries my blood. I have a lingering biological duty to provide for her, to ensure she does not drag this family name through the mud. I know you stepped up after Rosalia passed. Without you, we could not have changed the dirty blood running in her veins. You disciplined her. You taught her to be a noble lady. If you had not intervened, she would have turned out exactly like Rosalia, chasing after other men."
Pietro spoke in a dull, monotone voice, his coldness on full display. He remained blindly unaware of his wife's poisonous orchestrations. Nadia had been the one to convince him that his late wife was unfaithful. She had warped his reality to ensure his vast empire belonged solely to her.
Nadia forced a dramatic sigh to match his melancholy.
"We can only hope this marriage makes her responsible and teaches her loyalty."
Pietro tightened his grip on her fingers, his voice lacing with rare emotion.
"Nadia, please ensure all of Alessia’s wishes are fulfilled before she is banished from this house. Take her shopping. Buy her whatever she points at. Make the arrangements for a grand wedding. Give her a special day."
Nadia flashed her most charming, deceptive smile.
"Of course, my love. I will do everything in my power to make her day truly unforgettable."
She kept her smile bright while secretly praying for Alessia to endure an eternity of suffering in her new marriage.
The day of the opulent wedding arrived with a suffocating rush. The grand hall transformed into an architectural masterpiece. Brilliant crystal chandeliers hung suspended from the vaulted ceilings, casting warm, golden light across the polished marble floors. Massive, cascading arrangements of pastel flowers climbed the pillars and framed the altar, filling the vast space with a heavy, sweet fragrance. The extravagant setup served one specific purpose: to impress the relentless media and the snobbish high society elites packing the rows of white chairs. The air hummed with the eager chatter of the city's most powerful syndicates waiting for the spectacle to begin.
Tucked away in the secluded bridal chamber, Alessia stood frozen before a full-length mirror. The pristine white gown she wore was a designer masterpiece, heavy with imported lace and intricate beadwork. Yet, the thick layers of silk and tulle felt more like a suffocating straightjacket than a wedding dress. Her reflection stared back at her, pale and shaking. She was paralyzed by the terrifying knowledge of her impending groom's dark reputation. Valerio Marchetti was a notorious brute in the boardroom and a careless monster in the city's underground scene. He destroyed people without a second thought.
A desperate, clawing urge to flee the premises consumed her. She wanted to rip the delicate veil from her hair, hike up the heavy skirts of her gown, and bolt through the back exit into the anonymous city streets. She paced the length of the plush carpet, her chest heaving with shallow breaths.
Then, the harsh reality of her situation slammed into her, anchoring her feet to the floor. She knew this marriage was not a union of souls. It was a high-stakes business deal forged in cold blood to merge two massive empires. The relentless media cameras were already flashing outside the venue, watching every single move the Vitiello family made. If she ran, the fallout would bring catastrophic ruin down upon her own family. She realized with a sickening clarity that she could not doom her father's empire. She was trapped in this pristine white cage.
The heavy wooden door to the bridal chamber creaked open. Nadia glided into the room, her face painted with a sickeningly sweet smile. She escorted Alessia out of the room and down the long, winding corridor toward the main hall.
Pietro waited at the entrance to the aisle. He stood tall in his tailored tuxedo, his hands clasped behind his back. As Alessia approached, he turned his head and gave her a smile.
Alessia’s breath hitched. A foolish, desperate surge of hope leaped in her chest. Her father rarely ever smiled at her. For a split second, she thought he might actually feel a sliver of warmth on her wedding day.
The illusion violently shattered the moment he offered his arm.
She slid her trembling hand into the crook of his elbow. Pietro leaned in, dropping his facade instantly. His voice cut through the air like a serrated blade, chilling her to the bone.
"I expect you to behave properly in front of these guests. I need you to stay in this marriage for three years. Do not enrage Valerio."
Numb with paralyzing fear, Alessia swallowed hard and nodded in obedience.
The massive double doors swung inward, revealing the breathtaking expanse of the hall. A classical string quartet began playing a soft, melodic tune, signaling the start of the procession. Pietro stepped forward, pulling her along. They walked down the long, intimidating aisle toward the elevated stage where Valerio awaited. Hundreds of eyes locked onto her fragile frame. The relentless click of camera shutters echoed over the music, documenting her march to the executioner's block. She was too terrified to even lift her head, keeping her chin tucked down. She stared exclusively at the tips of her white satin shoes peeking out from under the heavy gown with each agonizing step.
Her father’s footsteps stopped. They had reached the base of the stage. Alessia finally looked up, her vision obscured by the delicate lace veil draped over her face.
She saw a large, masculine hand outstretched in front of her. Valerio was offering to help her up the stairs.
She hesitated, her fingers twitching at her sides. Reluctantly, she reached out and placed her small hand in his. His grip was firm and unyielding. As she took a step up, the heavy fabric of her gown caught on the edge of her heel. She stumbled forward, letting out a sharp gasp.
Instinct took over. She threw her free hand out and gripped his broad, muscular shoulder for balance.
For the first time, she looked up and met Valerio’s face. He was strikingly handsome, with sharp, aristocratic features carved from stone. But his expression was unreadable. His cold grey eyes narrowed, attempting to pierce through the sheer fabric of her delicate veil to see the woman trembling beneath it. The sheer intensity of his stare sent a shiver down her spine.
Intimidated by his imposing presence, she quickly stepped back, dropping her hand from his shoulder as if the dark fabric of his suit had burned her.
She took her place beside him at the altar. The officiant stepped forward and began reciting the hollow, meaningless rituals. He droned on about eternal commitment, unity, and unwavering loyalty. Alessia tuned out the empty words, her mind buzzing with a loud, deafening static. She focused only on surviving the next five minutes.
When the gorgeous wedding rings were finally presented on a velvet cushion, Alessia’s hands shook under the immense pressure of the crowd's heavy stares. It was her turn. She turned toward Valerio, clutching the platinum band between her thumb and index finger. He held his left hand out, his palm steady and relaxed. Alessia went to extreme lengths to avoid daring to touch his bare skin. She carefully aligned the metal band with his ring finger and slid it on in one swift motion, jerking her hands back to her sides the second the platinum cleared his knuckle.
Valerio picked up the smaller ring and slid it onto her finger with mechanical precision.
The officiant smiled at the audience, raising his hands.
"I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."
Alessia fell into an instant panic. Her breath caught in her throat. The thought of this terrifying stranger kissing her in front of a thousand flashing cameras made her stomach twist into painful knots. She stood rigid, bracing for impact.
A long second passed. Then another. A wave of profound relief washed over her when Valerio made absolutely no move toward her. He stood there, his jaw clenched, staring out at the crowd with cold indifference.
The silence stretched, turning the air thick with awkward tension. A sharp-looking associate in a dark suit stepped up behind Valerio. He leaned in, whispering urgently into Valerio's ear regarding the importance of keeping up appearances for the hungry press.
Valerio frowned. The annoyance radiating from his rigid posture was palpable. He shifted his weight and stepped closer to Alessia.
He raised his hands and cupped her pale cheeks. His palms were incredibly large and surprisingly warm against her freezing skin. He tilted her face up, his thumbs lightly grazing her jawline. Alessia squeezed her eyes shut.
He slowly descended his head. The scent of sharp cologne and mint washed over her.
His lips brushed the extreme corner of her mouth with such a light, fleeting touch that she could not even tell if it was real, stealing her first kiss just like that in front of the watching crowd.
