Striking Resemblance

The heavy silence in the steel box felt thick enough to choke on. The smooth mechanical hum of the elevator idling on the first floor faded into the background, drowned out by the thunderous rushing of blood in Clara’s ears.

"Going up or heading out?"

Declan’s voice. Deep, gravelly, wrapped in that signature freezing edge. The sound scraped against her nerve endings, ripping open scars she had spent five grueling years trying to stitch shut. Clara stood paralyzed. Her phone remained pressed hard against her ear. Edgar’s muffled voice squawked from the speaker, demanding to know what was happening, but she registered none of it. She couldn't form a single word.

She just stared.

The man dominating the threshold was a ghost ripped straight from her worst nightmares. He wore a pristine charcoal suit that molded flawlessly to his broad shoulders and narrow waist. Every detail was agonizingly unchanged—the sharp cut of his jawline, the arrogant tilt of his chin, the piercing, unforgiving eyes that used to gaze at her with feigned affection before sentencing her to burn. Looking at him brought the crushing despair of the past crashing down on her all over again. She could almost feel the cold needles drawing her blood to save Vanessa. She could almost smell the roaring smoke of the warehouse where she was left to die.

The scent of expensive cedar and crisp mint rolled off him, invading the cramped space. Clara’s knuckles turned bone-white. Her chest squeezed tight, a physical ache radiating through her ribs.

Declan didn't step back. He stepped forward, commanding the space like a king claiming his territory.

The cluster of massive, muscle-bound bodyguards flowed into the elevator behind him, instantly suffocating the small cabin. The sheer size of the men forced Clara to take a sudden step back, her spine hitting the cold mirrored wall of the elevator.

Declan swept his gaze over her. He saw a pale, wide-eyed woman gripping her phone, her gaze locked onto his face with an intense, unblinking focus. His expression hardened. A flicker of blatant disgust twisted his lips. He was accustomed to women staring at him in public spaces—the desperate, gold-digging types hoping to catch the eye of Aldenova’s most ruthless billionaire. He had zero patience for it tonight. He had a mission to accomplish.

He turned his head slightly, addressing the closest guard. "Get her out."

The command was casual. Dismissive. Like she was a piece of trash blocking his path to the upper floors.

The bodyguard immediately stepped toward Clara, reaching out a massive hand to grab her arm and physically remove her from the cabin.

The threat of rough physical contact snapped Clara out of her paralyzed state. The raw terror morphing instantly into defensive fury. She smacked the guard's hand away, her eyes flashing with sudden heat.

"Excuse me?" Clara's voice rang out, sharp and loud, echoing off the steel walls. She glared directly at Declan, refusing to shrink under his oppressive presence. "Do you own this elevator? I was here first, and I’m going up."

Declan paused. He turned his attention back to her, his jaw tightening. His dark eyes narrowed, scanning her defiant posture. He noted how she had originally looked like she was about to step out into the lobby, but the moment she saw him, she suddenly declared she was going up. To him, it was a painfully obvious tactic. Another pathetic ploy to stay in his vicinity.

The temperature in the cabin seemed to drop ten degrees. Declan said nothing. He simply reached into the breast pocket of his suit, pulled out a pair of dark designer sunglasses, and slid them onto his face, hiding his eyes. He turned his back to her, dismissing her existence as he faced the closed doors.

Clara let out a profound breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. Her shoulders slumped a fraction of an inch against the cold mirror.

He didn't recognize her.

The relief was dizzying. Five years ago, she was a naive, soft-spoken girl with a different style, a different demeanor, and a face that hadn't yet been hardened by near-death and motherhood. Her appearance had altered. Her hair was styled differently, her makeup sharp and professional, her posture screaming confidence rather than submission. To Declan Mercer, she was just another annoying stranger trying to ride his coattails.

The elevator doors slid shut, sealing them inside as the car began its ascent.

Clara discreetly lowered her phone, ending the call with Edgar. She needed her wits about her. Leo was roaming around this hotel somewhere. She had to find her wandering son and get out of Aldenova before this ruthless man realized his ex-wife was breathing the same city air.

"Mr. Mercer," one of the men in black suits spoke up, breaking the tense silence. The guard pressed a finger to his earpiece, listening intently to the encrypted chatter before reporting. "We’ve checked the perimeter and the guest logs. There is no trace of Night. It’s likely she hasn't shown up to the event."

Clara stiffened. *Night.*

Her professional alias.

She stared at the back of Declan’s head, her mind connecting the dots with blinding speed. He was hunting her. Over the past few years, she had built an untouchable reputation in the underground medical world as Doctor Night, a genius who could cure the incurable. And now, Declan was tearing apart a luxury hotel looking for her.

Why? The answer made her stomach turn. The gossip columns had been relentless lately. Vanessa—the woman Declan had betrayed Clara for, the fling he had protected at the cost of Clara’s life—was reportedly sick.

He was trying to capture Doctor Night to save Vanessa.

A bitter, venomous smirk curled the edges of Clara’s lips. *This disgusting bastard.* He was actually hunting her down to provide medical miracles for the very woman who had helped destroy her life.

"Tonight," Declan’s voice cut through the silence, cold and devoid of any human empathy. "We must find her. I don't care what it takes. Once we locate her, even if you have to resort to tying her up and dragging her out of here by force, she is coming back with me."

The sheer arrogance of his command sent a jolt of dark amusement through Clara.

He wanted to tie her up. He wanted to drag her back. The ruthless tyrant was issuing violent threats against the elusive medical genius, unaware that the very doctor he was plotting to kidnap was standing mere inches away, staring daggers into his spine. He was so pathetically clueless. Clara bit the inside of her cheek to keep from laughing out loud at the irony. *Let him search. Let him tear the city apart. He’ll never get what he wants.*

*Ding.*

The elevator chimed, signaling their arrival at the lavish banquet hall floor.

The polished steel doors parted, revealing a sprawling corridor lined with crystal chandeliers and thick velvet carpets. The muffled sound of orchestral music and clinking champagne glasses drifted from the main ballroom ahead.

Before the bodyguards could even shift to make a path, Clara bolted.

She practically sprinted out of the metal box, her heels sinking into the plush carpet as she bypassed the men in suits. She didn't look back. She couldn't care less about Declan's hunt for her alter ego right now. A far more terrifying reality was clawing at her mind.

Leo.

She had to find Leo immediately. Her five-year-old son was a mischievous force of nature, but more dangerously, he was a miniature, exact replica of the icy man standing in the elevator. Genetics were an undeniable, terrifying force. Clara had spent years looking at Leo’s face, seeing the ghost of his father in every sharp angle and dark gaze. If Declan caught even a fleeting glimpse of Leo's face, questions would undoubtedly arise. The hereditary connection was too strong to ignore.

Clara navigated the crowded corridors, pushing past waitstaff carrying trays of hors d'oeuvres and guests draped in expensive silks. Panic tightened her throat. She scanned the opulent surroundings, her eyes darting between towering floral arrangements and velvet-draped columns.

Meanwhile, Declan stepped out of the elevator bank, adjusting the cuffs of his pristine suit. His focus was razor-sharp, his mind consumed by the search for the elusive doctor. He needed Night. Vanessa’s condition was deteriorating, and patience was a luxury he no longer possessed.

He strode authoritatively down the corridor toward the bustling bash. His imposing figure parted the crowd of socialites and businessmen like a blade through water. His bodyguards maintained a tight perimeter, their eyes scanning the faces of the attendees.

Declan rounded a corner near the entrance of the main ballroom.

Suddenly, a small, fast-moving blur careened out from behind a marble pillar.

The impact was immediate.

A solid, tiny body slammed directly into Declan’s long legs. The harsh collision sent the young boy stumbling backward, his small sneakers skidding on the polished floor.

"Whoa!" the boy yelped, losing his balance.

He crashed hard into a passing waiter. The waiter, caught off guard, frantically tried to stabilize the large silver tray balanced on his hand, but the momentum was too much. The tray tipped.

Four crystal goblets of expensive, dark red wine launched into the air.

The crimson liquid splashed down like a harsh rainstorm, splattering ruinously all over Declan’s pristine charcoal suit. The dark stain spread instantly across the fine fabric of his trousers and soaked the crisp white cotton of his dress shirt.

A collective gasp rippled through the immediate crowd. The music seemed to pause.

Declan froze. He looked down at the sticky, dark red mess ruining his clothes. His face darkened instantly into a terrifying scowl. The veins in his neck popped. The aura of cold authority radiating from him morphed into a suffocating, lethal rage.

He opened his mouth to unleash his wrath on whoever had dared to crash into him.

But before he could utter a single freezing syllable, the kid scrambled up from the sticky floor.

"I'm sorry, sir!" the boy exclaimed urgently.

Leo didn't even look up at the man he had just hit. He was too busy frantically clutching his stomach, his little legs crossing and uncrossing in a desperate, squirming dance. His face was scrunched up in agony.

"I gotta go!" Leo cried out, hopping from one foot to the other. "Can you move? Please! I really, really can't hold it anymore!"

Declan’s furious gaze snapped down to the small, squirming figure blocking his path. He prepared to bark a harsh reprimand, but the words died in his throat.

Staring down at the boy, Declan recognized the face perfectly.

The dark hair. The sharp eyebrows. The exact shape of the eyes.

He immediately mistook the boy for Luke Mercer.

Luke and Chloe were the twin children Declan had raised single-handedly for the past five years. After Nora had dumped the kids at his doorstep, claiming she didn't want them, Declan had taken on the responsibility of raising them. He was a strict, demanding father, and he expected nothing but obedience from his household.

And right now, 'Luke' was supposed to be safe at the estate under the watchful eye of his caretaker.

Exasperation quickly replaced Declan's initial rage over the ruined suit. He glared down at the boy, his jaw clenched tight. This level of rebellion was unacceptable.

"Luke," Declan sternly demanded, his voice dropping to a dangerous, disciplinary octave. "Who allowed you to come out here?"

Leo stopped his frantic hopping for a fraction of a second. He blinked, his brow furrowing in deep confusion. *Luke?*

"Where is Chloe?" Declan barked, stepping closer, his imposing shadow falling over the small boy. "Why are you running around a hotel without your security detail?"

Leo found the unfamiliar names odd. He didn't know anyone named Luke, and he certainly didn't know a Chloe. He clutched his crotch tighter, desperately trying to keep his bladder from giving out, and finally tilted his head back to look at the angry man yelling at him.

The moment Leo’s eyes locked onto Declan’s face, the little boy was struck speechless.

The desperate need to find a restroom vanished for one stunned second. Leo stared. He blinked. He stared again.

The man towering over him had his face.

It wasn't just a passing resemblance. It was a mirror-like replica. The slope of the nose, the intensity in the dark eyes, the shape of the jawline. It was like looking into a magical, fast-forwarding mirror.

Leo’s mouth fell open. He murmured to himself in pure, unfiltered shock, his young mind trying to process the impossible visual in front of him.

"Sir... you look like me," Leo whispered. Then, scratching the side of his head, he wondered aloud, "When did Mommy secretly have such a giant, grown-up son?"

Declan heard the bizarre muttering, and his expression turned dangerously icy.

A giant, grown-up son? What kind of nonsense was this boy spouting?

Declan had noticed Luke acting distant and unhappy over the past few days. The boy had been giving him the cold shoulder at home. But Declan had not anticipated his son being this defiantly disobedient in public. Not only was he sneaking out to a dangerous, crowded event without his bodyguards, but he was also spewing nonsense and blatantly refusing to address him as 'dad.'

The disrespect was intolerable.

"You think this is a game?" Declan’s voice was a low growl.

He didn't hesitate. Reaching down with lightning speed, Declan scooped the squirming boy up off the floor effortlessly. He tucked the child securely under his arm.

"Hey! Put me down!" Leo yelled, thrashing his little legs in the air. "I need to pee! Let me go!"

Declan ignored the protests. He adjusted his grip, his large palm landing firmly on Leo's rear end in a sharp, resounding spank.

*Smack.*

Leo gasped, his eyes going wide with shock. No one ever spanked him!

Declan’s eyes blazed with stern, unyielding authority as he glared at the struggling child.

"Do you still remember that I'm your father?"
