The Devils Doorstep
{Harper’s POV}
The massive front doors slam shut behind my back with a deafening thud. The heavy, booming sound echoes through the cavernous space, vibrating in my chest and leaving me frozen in place. I blink against the sudden barrage of bright light, feeling like a confused extra who just wandered onto the wrong movie set.
If I were forced to leave a Yelp review for this kidnapping experience so far, I would generously give it a solid three out of ten. I mentally deduct several points for the crude use of duct tape currently binding my wrists together. It chafes my skin and feels incredibly unrefined. But I have to add points back for the sheer, awe-inspiring aesthetic of this location. The place my captors have just dragged me into is not a normal house. It is a breathtaking, literal palace.
I tilt my head back, craning my neck to take in the impossibly tall ceilings. Massive chandeliers the size of small cars hang from above, casting glittering rainbows across pristine marble floors. I look down at my bound wrists, then back up at the crystal fixtures. With the luxurious surroundings I am currently witnessing, I feel like I deserve at least a pair of shiny handcuffs. Standing here in my faded, oversized sweatpants and worn-out sneakers, my hostage situation feels out of place. It feels like a bad joke interrupting a high-society gala. They could have at least kidnapped someone wearing a cocktail dress.
A heavy hand shoves my shoulder from behind.
"Move." The bald, joyless kidnapper barks the order.
I stumble forward. My cheap sneakers squeak loudly against the polished marble floor in the quiet hall. Great. Even the floors are judging my footwear. I am forced to march down an endless maze of hallways. The interior of this estate is just as ridiculous as the exterior I saw from the driveway. Tall marble columns line the corridor, and every wall holds priceless, museum-quality art. They are the kind of abstract paintings that demand respectful whispers from people pretending to understand them.
Security cameras track our movements from the upper corners. The corridors are heavily guarded by silent, imposing men clad in impeccably tailored suits. They stand along the walls like expensive statues. Every single pair of cold, hardened eyes tracks my awkward progression. They do not look at me with casual curiosity. They stare at me the way one might observe a wild animal that is either dangerous or incredibly stupid. Which, in my defense, I am currently neither. I think.
I try to ease the suffocating tension in the air. I turn my head slightly toward the bald kidnapper marching beside me.
"So. Just to clarify, are we going to talk about the kidnapping situation and the specific role I am playing here?" I ask.
He does not react. He keeps his gaze locked straight ahead, his jaw tight.
"You are being unnecessarily rude, you know." I mutter under my breath.
My efforts are ignored, met only with a chilling, disciplined silence. We keep walking. The polished marble reflects the overhead lights, creating a bright mirror effect on the ground that I really do not appreciate. My reflection looks exactly like a disheveled hostage in baggy loungewear. My life has taken a very weird turn tonight.
Up ahead, two men in rugged street outfits stand near a weird-looking male stone statue. They are huddled together, engaged in a hushed, frantic conversation. As we approach, my ears catch a fleeting snippet of their hushed voices.
"…so Moretti is not going to take things lightly." One thug whispers.
The second man nods in agreement. "He shouldn’t. This shit has gone on for too long."
My ears perk up instantly. Moretti. That is the mysterious, authoritative name from the van. I slow my pace, dragging my squeaking sneakers against the floor to eavesdrop. I need to gather any shred of information about this Moretti person.
Before I can process the threat in those words, a rough hand grabs my arm and propels me forward again.
"Keep moving." The bald kidnapper growls.
We pace down the remainder of the corridor and stop in front of a set of massive, intricately carved double doors. They are fashioned from dark wood and feature ornate panels. They look exactly like the kind of doors leading into rooms where serious people make lethal decisions.
One of the suited men stationed near the entrance glances down at my taped wrists, then up at my kidnappers. He frowns, his hand drifting toward his jacket.
"Is that…?" The guard asks.
"Just open the door." The bald man interrupts, waving a dismissive hand.
The guard pushes the heavy wood open. I am unceremoniously escorted inside, and I immediately hate every single choice in my life that led me to this specific moment.
The space is vast. It is not normal-conference-room large; it looks exactly like a secret war council for billionaires. A tremendously long black table dominates the center of the room. Surrounding it are at least ten men in sharp, expensive suits radiating a dark, lethal energy. They look fully capable of ruining entire lives before they even have their morning coffee. Flanking the perimeter are more heavily scarred, aggressive thugs who look like they solve problems exclusively with violence.
As I am pushed into the center of the room, every single conversation dies. Every pair of hardened eyes snaps toward me.
For the very first time since this crazy night started, my sarcastic shield cracks. A tangible, icy streak of genuine fear hits my chest, freezing the blood in my veins. The sheer magnitude of this setting is too powerful not to have dire implications. I pour out a heavy breath and stand awkwardly in the middle of their heavy, judging stares. I shift my weight from one foot to the other, my worn-out sneakers squeaking once more against the floor.
If you are going to kidnap someone, the least you can do is offer a chair. Desperate to break the unbearable silence, I offer a weak, trembling greeting.
"Uhm… Hi. Nice suits." I say.
The room offers no response. The silence is absolute, heavy, and suffocating. Fantastic. Tough crowd.
The bald-headed kidnapper releases my arm. He takes a large step backward, leaving me isolated in the center of the floor. I am standing alone in a room full of powerful strangers, waiting for something terrible to happen. One of the men leans toward another, whispering behind his hand. Another man casually checks his expensive watch.
I open my mouth to attempt speaking again, but the atmospheric pressure in the room suddenly shifts.
It is subtle at first. A chair scrapes quietly against the floor. Then, it feels as if the oxygen has been sucked out of the space. The postures of the hardened criminals around me instantly stiffen into rigid attention. The guards near the wall stand straighter. The palpable tension in the air sharpens into something almost electric. It feels like every person in the room just remembered the same terrifying fact at the exact same moment.
A man standing near the heavy doors whispers in a tone laced with reverence and fear.
"He’s here."
I roam my gaze toward the doors. The silence grows heavier, becoming even more silent if that is physically possible. Slowly, the sound of measured, deliberate footsteps echoes sharply against the marble floors outside. They do not sound hurried. They belong to a man who does not rush for anyone. The heavy doors swing open wider behind me.
I turn my head, my breath catching in my throat.
Stepping into the room is a tall, broadly built man cloaked in a tailored black suit. He moves with the fluid, calm confidence of a predator who has never once in his life been intimidated. He possesses a dangerously charismatic, overwhelming presence. Just by standing there, he instantly dwarfs everyone else in the room, making these lethal crime bosses look like mere subordinates. The men at the table straighten their spines automatically. No one dares to speak another word.
Unfortunately for my fragile emotional stability, he is also annoyingly, strikingly attractive. He possesses intense, piercing green eyes and a jawline sharp enough to cut through my debt papers in one swing. He looks younger than the other men, but his composed expression suggests absolute authority.
The CEO of Kidnapping has officially arrived.
He stops his advance. His imposing figure stands still as his intense gaze sweeps analytically over the room. He takes everything in with a single glance before his green eyes land directly, and heavily, upon me.
They stay there.
I stare back. What else am I supposed to do?
My brain scrambles to process the situation. This must be Moretti. The mysterious, terrifying person everyone has been whispering about is now standing just a few feet away. The silence stretches out, pulling tighter and tighter into an uncomfortable, vibrating wire. Everyone else waits for his command, making the situation disturbingly uncomfortable. My heart hammers against my ribs, but my mouth moves before my brain can stop it.
I clear my throat loudly.
"Okay. Before this tense meeting continues, can someone explain why I’m here? Also, are you the boss or the intimidating assistant? I want clarity on that." I announce, shattering the silence and drawing every single horrified eye back to me. To make matters worse, I raise my taped hands and point directly at the beautifully imposing man in the suit.
The room freezes in undisguised horror. Reality pauses. The suited men stare at me as if I have just signed my own death warrant. One of the scarred thugs is gaping so widely his jaw is practically resting on the floor.
The man standing in front of me does not flinch. He does not show a hint of anger or panic.
He simply raises a single, dark eyebrow. His green gaze intensifies, piercing through my bravado and dismantling me down to my core. He studies me for a long, agonizing moment before he finally speaks. His voice is a rich, total calm, devoid of any hesitation.
"This isn’t the Scorpion’s daughter. Who is this?" He mutters, his eyes never leaving mine, locking me in place.
