The Wrong Girl
{Harper’s POV}
The transition from unconsciousness to waking reality is a jarring, unforgiving process. The very first sensation that forcefully registers in my groggy mind is the harsh, stinging bite of heavy-duty duct tape. It is wrapped tightly around my wrists in thick, overlapping layers, pinning my hands together in a restrictive bind. Every slight movement of my fingers only reinforces the sticky, unyielding friction of the adhesive pulling against my sensitive skin. I try to pull my wrists apart, but the tape holds firm, locking my joints in place.
Immediately following this physical discomfort is an aggressive, mechanical vibration. It rumbles through the cold floorboards directly beneath my aching body, rattling my teeth and shaking my bones. As the dense fog slowly clears from my brain and my eyes flutter open, I take in the claustrophobic sight surrounding me. I am boxed in by dark, utilitarian metal walls. The air smells heavily of stale sweat, exhaust fumes, and cheap leather.
Seated directly across from me in the shifting shadows are two massive mountains of men. Their huge frames resemble human refrigerators stuffed awkwardly into dark tactical clothing. They take up an unreasonable amount of space in the cramped vehicle.
The chilling realization crashes down upon me with a suffocating weight.
I have been kidnapped.
Instead of demonstrating any cinematic grace or resilient bravery, a very real, very human panic sets in. My heart begins to hammer against my ribs with such frantic force that I am genuinely concerned it might break something on the way out. My breathing turns shallow and rapid. I frantically scramble to retrace my final moments of freedom, digging desperately through the blank spots in my memory. The very last memory I can scrape together is finishing my grueling evening shift at the campus library. I remember logging out of the computer system, stepping out into the freezing night air, zipping my jacket up to my chin, and walking across a cold, deserted parking lot. I remember the sound of my own footsteps echoing on the concrete.
After that, there is just a terrifying void of nothingness.
Now, I am trapped in the back of a moving van, bound with silver duct tape like a hostage in a bad crime movie, and accompanied by two terrifying strangers who look like professional hitmen.
Deciding that silence is my enemy, I nervously clear my throat. The raspy sound echoes loudly in the small, enclosed space.
It instantly earns me a menacing glare from the bald man sitting directly across from me. He looks joyless, like a man who has never laughed a single day in his miserable life. The hard, unforgiving lines of his face suggest he would rather snap my neck than listen to me breathe.
“Good evening.” I offer a hesitant but polite greeting, trying my best to keep my voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through my veins.
He greets my attempt at basic manners with a sharp frown. “Stop talking.”
“Well, since you kidnapped me, talking is essentially the only form of compensation I have left.” I point out the logic reasonably, refusing to be subdued without putting up at least a verbal fight.
The second man scowls. He crosses his massive arms over his broad chest, visibly annoyed by my mere existence. “Don’t engage with her. Just make sure she shuts up.”
“I can technically shut up, yes, but the chances of that happening right now are practically zero.” I sigh, shifting my weight uncomfortably on the unforgiving metal floor.
Suddenly, the van hits a brutal bump in the road. My shoulder slams against the hard metal wall with a sickening thud. Pain flares sharply down my arm, making me wince and bite the inside of my cheek.
“Ouch. If you guys are running a professional kidnapping operation, you desperately need to invest in better seating arrangements.” I offer my unsolicited feedback while rubbing my bruised shoulder against my knees.
The bald guy rubs his face in an expression of soul-crushing defeat. He looks like a man pushed to the edge of his sanity by a single conversation. He leans forward slightly, projecting his deep voice toward the front of the vehicle.
“Rocco. She doesn’t look or act like the quarry. I think we grabbed the wrong girl.”
A muffled voice floats back from the driver’s seat. Rocco sounds impatient and dismissive over the hum of the engine.
“That is the correct target. Moretti will deal with the situation when we reach the base.”
The name *Moretti* rings with an undeniable sense of dangerous authority. It sounds like someone who gives orders that end in people disappearing into rivers. I mentally file the name away for later, forcing myself to ignore the tape painfully digging into my bruised wrists.
“So, who exactly is this Moretti person?” I adopt a casual, conversational tone, hoping one of them might slip up and give me some much-needed context.
I am met with stony silence. Both human refrigerators just stare at me with flat, dead eyes.
The second guy shifts in his seat, muttering in clear distress under his breath. “The boss is going to end us when he finds out we bungled the Scorpion job.”
*Scorpion job?*
Intrigued and terrified, I sit up straighter. A Scorpion job sounds like something involving poison, international assassins, or illicit weapons deals. It definitely does not sound like something a broke college student trying to pay off student loans should be involved in.
“Excuse me, but what does a Scorpion have to do with any of this? Because if there is a Scorpion involved, I, the victim, deserve to be informed.” I demand answers, my heart picking up its frantic pace all over again.
“Stop talking right now!” The bald man furiously barks the order, leaning forward as if to physically intimidate me into silence.
“I am just trying to point out the vital importance of communication in high-stress environments.” I preach to him, keeping my chin raised despite the knot of fear twisting my stomach.
Slowly, the van's engine shifts gears. The mechanical roar drops to a lower, rumbling register. The vehicle slows down as the tires crunch heavily onto a gravel surface. Deep, metallic groans echo from the outside, sparking an intense wave of curiosity that momentarily overrides my sheer terror.
I manage to push myself up on my knees, balancing awkwardly, and peek through the tiny, grimy back window. My breath catches sharply in my throat at the sight outside.
Massive, imposing iron gates are slowly swinging open. They are the exact kind of intricately wrought gates reserved for cinematic billionaires and supervillains living on secluded cliffs. We roll smoothly down an endlessly long driveway. The path is meticulously lined with perfectly trimmed hedges, softly glowing landscape lights, and a massive, functioning water fountain adorned with elegant stone statues. The sheer opulence is dizzying. I find myself wondering what kind of ruthless criminals have the time and budget for such immaculate landscaping. This is a far cry from the shady warehouses or abandoned factories I had mentally prepared myself for.
The van finally lurches to a halt. The engine cuts out, plunging the back of the van into a heavy, tense silence.
The rear doors fly open. The biting cold night air rushes inside, stinging my flushed cheeks. The bald man reaches in, grabs me tightly by the arm, and unceremoniously drags me out into the gravel driveway.
I stumble over my own feet, barely catching my balance before I hit the ground. My eyes widen in shock as I am confronted by the staggering sight rising before me. It is an enormous, sprawling stone mansion. Warm, inviting golden light spills outward from towering, floor-to-ceiling windows. The rich glow beautifully illuminates grand balconies, pristine glass doors, and massive gold columns supporting the front portico. The entire estate looks less like a criminal hideout and more like the ancestral home of a European royal family. It is a luxurious palace designed to showcase unimaginable wealth and power.
Overwhelmed by the brazen display of riches, I stare down at my pathetic taped wrists. Then I look back up at the luxurious palace standing in front of me.
“Wow.” A quiet, awe-struck whisper escapes my lips.
The bald man roughly shoves my shoulder from behind, propelling me toward the towering entrance doors.
“Walk.”
I am forced forward, taking step after reluctant step across the expansive entryway. As I am guided inside the grand doors, a very clear, persistent thought crosses my mind. If I was destined to be kidnapped tonight, I genuinely expected a damp basement with flickering bulbs, not a billionaire's paradise.
But as I step into the breathtaking foyer, the most pressing mystery remains unsolved.
Who exactly is my kidnapper?
