The Treant Overlords

The world of *Dusk of Divine Lords* materialized around Varek, the familiar bustling sounds of the Novice Settlement washing over him. He didn't spare a single glance at the crowded monster farming zones. Instead, he adjusted the grip on his starter bow and headed straight for the treacherous, craggy cliff looming behind the town.

In his past life, it took the massive player base an entire week of blind wandering to stumble upon the obscure secret hidden here.

The rocky path was steep, the digital wind howling against his skin. He reached a secluded plateau devoid of regular monsters. His eyes scanned the thick, twisted vegetation. According to his memories, the trigger for the hidden labyrinth was subtle, a needle in a haystack for anyone not looking. He paced along the edge of the dense brush, scrutinizing the bark, the leaves, and the shadows.

There. A thick tree blending into the foliage, its roots shifting just a fraction of an inch against the dirt.

"Found you," Varek muttered, a smirk touching his lips.

He drew his bowstring back. The Level 10 Disguised Treant had minimal stats—only 2,100 HP and a basic disguise skill. It was a pitifully weak gatekeeper. Varek loosed three arrows in rapid succession. The projectiles buried themselves deep into the thick bark, shattering the illusion into a burst of green pixels.

*Ding! You have killed a Disguised Treant. Experience points +43.*

Before the experience notification even faded from his peripheral vision, a grand chime echoed in his ears, shaking the very air around the cliffside.

*Ding! Due to your killing of a hidden monster in the Novice Settlement, the hidden dungeon Warped Thicket will now open.*

*Ding! You are the first player to open the labyrinth. A server-wide announcement will be made. Do you wish to hide your name?*

"No," Varek said. Let the world know.

The sky above the starter zones flashed with golden text, broadcasting his achievement to every corner of the game.

*Server-wide announcement: Congratulations to player Glacial King for successfully opening the hidden dungeon Warped Thicket in the Novice Settlement. He is the first player to do so. Special rewards: Attribute Points +10, Gold +10, Black Iron equipment +1. This announcement is made with the hope that all players will continue to strive forward.*

Instantly, the global chat channels exploded into a frenzy. Players who had already grinded their way out of the Novice Settlement let out collective groans of regret, furious that they had arrogantly abandoned the zone too early. They realized they had missed out on pristine, untouched content that could offer a monumental head start. The top-tier guilds would be scrambling, demanding their tanks and healers rush back to claim a piece of the pie.

Varek ignored the uproar. He opened his character menu and dumped all ten reward attribute points straight into his attack speed. His eyes then shifted to his inventory to inspect the shiny new Black Iron loot.

*Savanna Longbow: Black Iron*

*Equipped Requirements: None, Archer class*

*Effect 1: Attack +65*

*Effect 2: HP +500*

*Effect 3: Vital-Leech +2%*

*Durability: 100*

Varek rubbed his temples. He let out a long, frustrated sigh. The stats were decent for a beginner, but the bow lacked any attack speed boosts. For his specific build, it was a tragic joke. His loot luck remained as terrible as he remembered.

He equipped the new weapon anyway to secure the raw damage boost and turned toward the cliff face. The solid rock had split open, revealing a swirling, dark portal. The entrance to the Warped Thicket.

Varek stepped up to the glowing prompt. Four difficulties appeared in the interface: Easy, Hard, Nightmare, and Hell.

"You're it. Hell Level," Varek declared.

*Ding! Warning. Hell Level dungeons are not recommended for solo play. Are you sure you want to continue?*

Varek tapped 'Yes', dismissing the stark warning. Fortune favored the bold. His current level might scream suicide, but his decade of past-life tactical expertise more than compensated for his numerical disadvantages.

He stepped into the swirling darkness.

The first floor of the labyrinth was a damp, claustrophobic expanse of twisted roots and glowing moss. The air smelled of ancient soil. The second his boots touched the muddy ground, the shadows writhed. A massive horde of Elite Warped Treants swarmed his position, their bark groaning as they lumbered forward.

*Warped Treant (Elite): Level 10*

*HP: 8,500*

*Attack: 129*

Varek didn't flinch. He drew his bow and fired into the dense center of the mob.

*Critical Hit! -1812!*

His Lightning Jump passive triggered. Arcs of blue electricity chained through the clustered horde.

*-362!*

*-362!*

With his upgraded passive, the damage spread like wildfire, jumping from one target to the next in blinding flashes of blue. He strafed along the damp cavern walls, unleashing rapid-fire arrows that tore through the elites. Each pull of the bowstring landed massive, debilitating critical hits. It only took five precise arrows to drop a single Treant, and the chain lightning decimated the rest.

*Ding! You have killed an Elite Warped Treant. Experience points +351.*

The experience bar surged. Varek tore through the entire floor without breaking a sweat, keeping the lumbering beasts at a safe firing distance. The sheer volume of experience points pushed him over the edge.

*Ding! You have reached level 8. Attribute Points +5.*

He allocated every single point into his attack speed to further amplify his build. The last elite crumbled into dust, revealing a glowing portal gate at the far end of the cavern.

Varek stepped through, confident and hungry.

The portal deposited him onto the second floor. The air here was thicker, heavy with the scent of rotting wood and ozone.

Before he could even register the new layout, the challenge level spiked. Dozens of standard Warped Treants erupted from the ground. Behind them, ten towering, heavily armored Treant Overlords rose from the shadows.

*Treant Overlord (Elite): Level 10*

*HP: 35,280*

*Attack: 412*

Varek narrowed his eyes. He leaned on his Basic Attack Amplification passive, stepping backward to kite the massive mobs in a wide circle. He fired a volley of arrows, chunking their health bars.

But as he backpedaled, the sluggishness of his base movement speed became glaringly obvious. He had funneled every attribute point into attack speed, neglecting his legs.

Three massive Overlords tracked his slow retreat. They raised their thick wooden arms, predicting his path perfectly.

Varek tried to sidestep, but his avatar moved too slowly.

The ground erupted beneath his feet. Thick, thorny vines lashed out, wrapping around his ankles and dragging him down.

*Thorn Bind.*

He was immobilized. The UI flashed a glaring red.

*-823!*

*-821!*

*-823!*

Terrifying damage numbers flared across his vision. The vines squeezed tighter, crushing his armor and digging into his flesh. Varek gritted his teeth, a sharp hiss escaping his lips as the sensory pain feedback hit him.

*-123!*

*-421!*

*-423!*

His health bar plummeted. In just two agonizing seconds, he bled out over 13,000 HP.

*There's no dispel skill. This hurts. My movement speed is just too low,* Varek thought grimly, struggling against the thick bindings.

He braced for the killing blow. The horde of regular Treants lunged for him. But their massive, clunky frames worked against them. They bottlenecked, physically blocking each other from closing the remaining distance to crush him into the dirt. Their heavy branches slammed into one another, creating a chaotic wall of bark that shielded Varek from the fatal crush.

The magical bind finally snapped. The vines withered into ash.

Varek didn't waste a millisecond. He desperately threw himself into a roll, scrambling away from the encroaching wall of wood. He hit the ground, spun around on one knee, and drew his bow.

Another Overlord was raising its arms, green energy gathering in its palms.

Varek released the string. The arrow cut through the air and struck the Overlord squarely in its core. The casting animation shattered.

"Phew," Varek exhaled heavily.

A cold sweat broke out across the back of his neck. His heart hammered against his ribs. He looked at his decimated health bar and realized just how close he had come to a humiliating death.

Losing a level early on was a setback. But failing this run and letting some rival elite guild swoop in to steal the server's prestigious first clear? That would be a devastating blow to his pride.

Varek stood up slowly, maintaining his distance. He centered his breathing, letting the adrenaline sharpen his focus.

The initial arrogance of his overwhelming damage output melted away. Raw stats were not going to carry him through the rest of this hellish labyrinth. If he just relied on out-damaging them, he would die.

He shifted his grip on the bow. His gaze locked onto the remaining Treant Overlords. He had to rely on razor-sharp, hyper-focused reflexes. He needed to manually dodge incoming spells while precisely interrupting their deadly magical abilities with pinpoint archery. There was no room for error. Every step, every shot had to be perfect to survive the rest of the grueling dungeon.
