Paying It Forward

Varek’s fingers hovered over the system interface, the glowing holographic panels illuminating his face in the dim forest, ready to initiate the logout sequence.

"Hold up, Glacial King!" Highreach Guard’s voice rang out across the clearing, his heavy footsteps crunching against the forest floor.

Varek paused, his avatar’s dissolution halting. He turned to face the warrior, dropping his hand from the menu. "What’s up?"

Guard hastily intercepted him, straightening his posture. He dusted off the dark wooden armor he had just purchased. "Glacial King, I'm the heir of the Highreach Guild. I'd like to officially invite you to join us. How does a ten-million annual salary sound?"

Varek barely registered the astronomical figure. Ten million was a fortune to most, enough to buy a lifetime of luxury, but in the grand scheme of *Dusk of Divine Lords*, it was pocket change. He knew his true worth.

"Sorry, I've already set up my own team," Varek declined smoothly with a polite shake of his head. "But I appreciate the offer."

Guard masked his disappointment quickly. "Fair enough. But how about this? We could still partner up long-term. You farm the gear, Highreach buys it."

"Works for me," Varek nodded, securing a lucrative business partnership for future gear sales.

He turned back to the interface to finally leave, but a sudden, dark memory from his past life forcefully surfaced in his mind. Highreach Guard. Heir to the Highreach Guild. Three months after the servers went live, Guard’s brakes failed in the real world. A fatal car accident. Guard survived but was left permanently paralyzed. Six months later, the truth leaked out. The ruthless assassination was covertly orchestrated by Guard’s own flesh and blood over inheritance disputes.

Deciding to intervene in fate, Varek dropped his hand again.

"Wait, did you just say you're the heir of the Highreach Guild?" Varek asked.

"Yeah, why?"

Varek stepped closer, his tone dropping to a deadly serious cadence. "Since we know each other, let me give you a heads-up. Watch out for your sister."

"My sister?" Guard frowned, profound confusion masking his features. "What about her?"

"Just remember what I said." Varek waved him off. He had done enough. Whatever happened next was on Guard.

Rather than logging out in the wilderness, Varek summoned his town portal. He was unwilling to risk a sudden, fatal ambush from the lingering assassin, Umbra-Sunder, during the vulnerable logout timer out in the open forest.

Light enveloped him, depositing him within the protected borders of the Novice Settlement. Shielded by the absolute safety of the zone, Varek swiped his interface and logged out.

The real world rushed back in a wash of sterile sensory input. Varek opened his eyes, pushing the lid of the standard gaming pod upward. He stepped out, his bare feet hitting the cold linoleum floor of his cramped rented apartment. The digital clock on the wall read 8:00 a.m.

He stretched, his joints popping. A subtle, undeniable current of energy coursed through his muscles. *Dusk of Divine Lords* was a groundbreaking neural link game. Experts currently claimed the pods merely induced a deep REM sleep state, but Varek knew the truth. Leveling up and gaining stats in the virtual world provided a subtle spiritual and physical enhancement in reality. His mind felt sharper. His focus, razor-thin.

Bram’s pod in the corner hummed quietly. Varek walked into the tiny kitchen, opened the fridge, and pulled out eggs and bread to prepare a simple breakfast. The sizzle of the pan filled the silence.

Ten minutes later, a hiss sounded from the living room. Bram emerged from his pod, his face beaming with pride.

"Hey, Tank! Wash up and come eat," Varek called out, plating the food.

"You were right, Varek!" Bram practically skipped into the kitchen, grabbing a piece of toast. "Soloing is definitely the way to go. Making money is way easier this way. Guess what? I scored a Level 7 piece of gear today and flipped it for twelve grand. Twelve thousand dollars! The whales in this game are out of their minds!"

Varek merely smiled knowingly, taking a bite of his eggs. The astronomical real-world market prices for low-level virtual gear weren't driven by random rich kids. The major international guilds, massive corporations, and governments were covertly preparing for the game's inevitable global dominance. They knew the truth of the neural link and were pouring billions into securing an early advantage, hoarding resources like dragons.

"That's just the start," Varek said.

"Oh, it gets better." Bram slammed his hand on the table, uncontainable excitement radiating from him. "I'm level 9 now, and I got three passive skills!"

Varek kept his expression neutral. Armed with his future knowledge, he knew exactly how Bram had acquired them. After leaving the Novice Settlement, Bram had encountered an obscure NPC minstrel reciting nonsensical poetry. Bram, in a stroke of sheer luck, had recited ancient Eldorian poems back at him. The minstrel, wildly impressed, took Bram as a disciple and gifted him three class-specific passives.

Double Armor, Double Shield, and Double Strike.

Varek also understood just how overpowered that infinite-stacking combination would become. Double Armor reflected a percentage of damage. Double Shield granted a health-based barrier upon using any control skill. Double Strike gave every attack a chance to trigger multiple effects. Since Double Shield and Double Strike could stack infinitely, Bram’s warrior tank build would soon become an unkillable, self-sustaining fortress. Every time he used a charge skill, multiple shields would proc.

"That's huge," Varek said.

"I'm telling you, I'm going to get even better gear soon," Bram announced. "We're going to be rich."

"No rush," Varek replied calmly. He reached into his pocket and smoothly slid a folded piece of paper across the kitchen table.

Bram picked it up, unfolding it. His eyes scanned the impossible numbers printed on the massive hospital payment receipt, tracking the zeros. He froze, his breath catching in his throat.

"I've already paid for Liora's surgery," Varek stated. "I got lucky and soloed a boss."

Bram stared at the total, his jaw slacking. "Wait... hold up..." The pieces suddenly clicked together in Bram’s mind. The timing, the money, the boss kills. His eyes went wide in sheer, unadulterated disbelief. "You're Glacial King?"

Varek gave a slight nod. "Eat your breakfast."

Bram gripped the receipt, staring at his friend like he was looking at a stranger. "Wow... you're incredible, Varek. If Silas knew about your achievements, he'd probably regret everything."

Brushing past the absolute shock radiating from his friend, Varek reached over to the counter, pulled out a worn notebook, and handed it to Bram.

"What's this?" Bram asked.

"Hidden quest guides for the Novice Settlement. There are hidden rewards tailored for every class." Varek pointed at the open page. "Listen to me carefully. Log in, go directly to the tavern in the Novice Settlement, and buy two bottles of the most expensive liquor. Do not cheap out. Take them straight to the blacksmith and have him craft the best warrior weapon for you. He will give you a lucrative chain quest. The further you progress, the better the scaling rewards."

Bram nodded eagerly, not questioning how Varek possessed this meticulously detailed knowledge. The trust in Varek’s leadership of their new studio was instantly cemented.

"I've got detailed guides in there for Simian and Specs, too," Varek added firmly. "Make sure they get them."

"Got it." Bram stuffed his face with the remaining eggs. "I'll hop back on right now."

"You log in first," Varek said, grabbing his jacket from the back of a chair. "I'm going to check on Liora."

Bram stood up, wiping his mouth. "I'm coming with you. The game can wait."

Putting the game discussions aside, the two men left the apartment and took the transit to the local hospital. The bustling city streets felt distant, muted compared to the vibrant reality of the digital world, but the sterile hospital corridors grounded Varek immediately. The smell of antiseptic and floor wax filled the air.

They walked into the ward. Standing quietly beside Liora’s bed, Varek looked down at her. Her pale, unconscious form rested among a tangle of tubes and monitors. The rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor was the only sound in the room.

Varek’s usually sharp, calculating gaze softened. A profound sense of relief washed over him, loosening a knot in his chest that had been tight for years.

The door opened, and the attending doctor stepped in, holding a clipboard.

"Mr. Varek," the doctor greeted.

"Doctor. When does Liora's surgery start?" Varek asked, his voice steady.

"It's securely scheduled for this afternoon. We have our best surgeon on standby. I just need you to sign right here." The doctor extended the clipboard and a pen.

"Okay." Varek took the pen. He didn't hesitate. With a steady hand, he smoothly signed the surgical consent form, the ink sealing his sister's future.

He handed the clipboard back. The doctor gave an affirming nod and left to finalize the preparations.

"She's going to be okay, man," Bram whispered, placing a heavy hand on Varek’s shoulder.

"I know," Varek said. The critical real-world formalities were finally handled. The heavy burden of real-world debt and impending loss was lifted from his chest. He felt as though he could finally breathe again.

They stayed for another twenty minutes before heading back to the cramped rented apartment. The morning sun now streamed through the single window, illuminating the small living space.

Bram climbed directly into his pod, ready to execute Varek’s master plan and scale their core team’s power.

Varek stood alone in the quiet room for a moment. He breathed in, feeling lighter, sharper, and utterly focused. The real world was secure. Now, it was time to prepare for his team’s future dominance in the game. With his real-world burdens lifted, he was mentally unchained, ready to push his in-game avatar to terrifying new limits.

He stepped into his gaming pod, the lid sliding shut, and seamlessly logged back into the game.
