A Fleeting Kindness

Valeria’s POV

I pull the heavy wooden door open a fraction wider. The kind-eyed old woman steps over the threshold, bringing a rush of cold air with her. I lock my features into a blank, silent mask, desperately burying the fresh betrayal and pain tearing at my insides. The forged legal documents sit like a curse on my mattress, but I refuse to let my torment show. She studies me for a second, her gaze heavy with a sorrow I do not want to acknowledge.

She holds out a small, worn wooden box. Inside sits a neat stack of folded clothes. "Here," she murmurs. "They belonged to my daughter. She is gone now, so you can have them."

Her voice is calm, yet laced with a heavy, undeniable grief. I hesitate. My boots feel glued to the floorboards. A deep, suffocating sense of unworthiness anchors my feet. I open my mouth to refuse the gift, but her eyes soften with genuine empathy. She steps closer and pushes the box firmly into my hands.

"Please," she insists, her tone leaving no room for argument. "It is cruel to make a young girl pay for her father’s sins. I will not stand by and watch. Please, let me help you."

I blink, absorbing her quiet strength. She explicitly knows the hell I am trapped in. Before I can process the weight of her words, she lifts a woven basket from her arm. The rich, salty scent of warm soup hits my nose, making my empty stomach cramp in desperate, hollow hunger.

"There is fresh bread, warm soup, and hot tea in the flask," she continues. "Tomorrow, you can come work at my herbal shop. I cannot pay you wages. But I promise you will be fed and clothed."

A job. Food. Clean clothes. It is a massive, vital lifeline tossed into the freezing dark ocean I am currently drowning in. My throat tightens. I cannot find the words to speak, so I give her a single, profound nod of silent gratitude.

When she finally slips out of the cramped room, I sink onto the hard floorboards with the basket. I tear off a chunk of the crusty bread and take a long gulp from the flask. The soothing heat of the tea slides down my raw throat. It is the very first glimpse of physical comfort I have felt in days. I chew the bread, staring up at the legal papers scattered across my bed. The three Alphas stole my Meridia inheritance. They trapped me in a forged marriage to legally steal my lands and strip my title. Fine. My only remaining objective is absolute survival in this freezing wasteland.

The next morning, a gentle hand shakes my shoulder. The old woman wakes me before the sun rises. We step out into the early Boreal morning, heading toward her shop. The frigid air bites at my exposed skin. Halfway across the frozen courtyard, I spot them. The three Alphas are returning from the tree line. My jaw locks instantly. I square my shoulders, lift my chin, and keep my gaze fixed dead ahead. I actively refuse to acknowledge their existence with even a passing glance. I walk right past them, maintaining my defiance, treating the men who ruined my life like empty air.

We reach her shop on the edge of the settlement. It is a simple, earthy haven. The rich scents of damp soil from potted plants and bundles of dried herbs fill the tight space. I stand near the counter, watching her sort dried leaves into glass jars. She moves around the tight space with intimate familiarity. She does not look at my hands or attempt to give me a single task.

The truth clicks in my mind. She doesn't actually need an assistant. The job is merely a quiet, generous excuse to keep me sheltered and safe from the hostile pack outside. That realization tugs hard at my damaged heart, granting me a fleeting, fragile sense of peace.

But before we can fully settle into the rhythm of the day, a shadow blocks the doorway.

A young boy steps inside. He has rich brown skin, soft woolly hair, and striking blue eyes. He looks distinctly out of place in the Boreal territory, but his posture is rigid.

"You are summoned by the Alphas," he informs me. His tone is polite, yet firm.

My blood turns to ice. I glance back at the old woman. She gives me a slow, encouraging nod. I force my leaden legs to move, stepping out from behind the safety of the herbal counter to follow him.

He leads me straight to the main Packhouse. We climb up into the Alphas' personal living quarters. He pushes open double doors, ushering me deep into a grand, sprawling apartment. It is vastly different from the stark room I first saw. This shared living space is massive, decorated with heavy furs and dark wood. Lining one side of the room are three closed doors, distinctly marking the separate domains of the three Alphas.

The boy gives me a brief, innocent smile, pivots on his heel, and walks out. The heavy doors shut behind him with a solid thud.

I stand entirely alone in the center of the quiet, intimidating space. Sharp anxiety claws at my chest, stealing my breath. My heart hammers against my ribs. The forged marriage documents flash in my mind. The legal claim they now have over my life. A cold, violent shiver runs through me at the terrifying thought of what this summons means. Consummation. The harsh reality of three brutal men demanding to fuck me, expecting to strip me naked, spread my legs, and shove their cocks inside my pussy to cement their theft of my territory.

I curl my hands into tight fists, digging my nails into my palms until the skin nearly breaks. My internal resolve hardens into unbreakable stone. They will have to snap my neck and kill me before I let a single one of them touch me.

I remain rooted to the floorboards, waiting in fearful suspense for what the Alphas intend to do with me.
