The Price of a Secret

The heavy, agonizing silence stretched across the main table, suffocating the air out of Damon’s lungs. His arm remained suspended, the crystal glass trembling slightly in his grip. The elite guests surrounding them watched with bated breath, waiting to see how the untouchable billionaire would react to this audacious approach.

Just as Damon felt his chest tighten with impending failure, Gideon broke the quiet. He spoke with deliberate slowness. "Winslow? Winslow Construction?"

A sudden jolt of foolish excitement spiked through Damon’s veins, making his heart leap. He misread the room. He took Gideon's acknowledgment as a sign of interest rather than a trap. Dropping his arm, Damon leaned in, practically vibrating with corporate ambition.

"Yes," Damon answered, seizing what he believed was a perfect, golden opening. "My grandfather always calls you a business genius. He mentioned that teaming up with Kensington Group on the Eden Resort project would be a monumental honor for our family."

He pushed his pitch aggressively. He ignored the unspoken rules of the banquet, desperate to secure a multi-billion-dollar partnership right then and there. If he could plant the seed of Winslow Construction in Gideon’s mind, he would secure his position as the heir apparent.

Gideon swirled the amber liquid in his glass, watching the vortex form. He leaned back in his plush chair, projecting an aura of absolute superiority. His sharp features remained unreadable for a split second before his voice dropped into a cold, drippingly sarcastic tone. He projected his next words, ensuring every single guest at the table caught the blow.

"The Eden Resort project is willing to partner with anyone," Gideon stated unequivocally. He paused, letting his gaze sweep over Damon. "With the sole exception of Winslow Construction."

Loud, collective gasps instantly filled the opulent room. The surrounding elites, who had been glaring at Damon with burning envy just moments prior, now stared with blatant schadenfreude. They recognized a ruthless public blacklisting. Whispers erupted as guests speculated on what catastrophic error the Winslow family had committed to earn such a swift, merciless rejection.

Damon froze. The blood drained from his face, swiftly replaced by a deep, humiliated flush that crawled up his neck. His mind scrambled for answers. His family had never interacted with the Kensington Group. They had never crossed paths with Gideon.

"Mr. Kensington," Damon stammered out a plea, his voice tight with desperation. He lowered his glass, his knuckles white. "May I inquire how my family's company managed to offend you?"

Gideon stood. The sheer commanding presence of the man forced several guests to take a subconscious step back. His icy, predatory gaze bypassed Damon. His dark eyes shifted and locked directly onto Vivienne. A cruel smirk played on his lips.

"You should ask Mrs. Winslow about that," Gideon suggested.

Instantly, the oppressive weight of a hundred stares slammed into Vivienne. She stood frozen in her ethereal, light dress. The murmurs grew louder. Her flawless beauty had already captivated a significant portion of the room, making her the center of attention. Now, she was the prime suspect in a corporate disaster.

She was caught off guard by the targeted attack. Her pulse pounded hard in her ears. Her mind raced, desperate to construct a believable lie. She had to hide the scandalous reality of their past. She could never let these people—especially her husband—know that she and Gideon had engaged in a three-year secret sexual affair. The memory of their intertwined bodies, the countless nights of raw, uninhibited fucking, clashed harshly with the sterile, judgmental glare of the ballroom. She had dumped the billionaire unceremoniously just days ago, and now he was out for blood.

Damon turned on her, his expression hostile and accusatory. "Vivienne, what is going on here?"

Panic clawed at her throat, but she forced it down. She stepped forward and painted a beautifully composed, fake smile on her lips. She wove a quick narrative to save face.

"I bumped into your luxury vehicle three years ago," she lied smoothly, fluttering her eyelashes to play the naive girl. "I had no idea who you were at the time. I left three hundred dollars on the windshield as compensation and simply walked away. I did not expect a man of your immense stature to hold such a petty grudge over a minor scratch, Mr. Kensington."

The lie hung in the tense air. The crowd murmured again, their expressions softening as they bought the fabricated story. A minor traffic incident explained the billionaire's petty annoyance without hinting at any sordid romance.

A massive wave of relief crashed over Damon. He had spent the last thirty seconds terrified that his wife was hiding a dark, scandalous secret with the billionaire. But that relief instantly twisted into an agitated rage. He needed someone to blame for the loss of the Eden Resort deal.

Desperate to salvage the business arrangement, he glared at his wife. He raised his voice, scolding her aggressively in front of the silent room.

"Three hundred dollars is an egregious insult to the Kensington name!" Damon barked, his words lashing out. "You acted like a careless fool. That scratch probably cost a fortune to fix. Get over here and apologize to him right now."

The high-society crowd exchanged shocked glances. Damon displayed zero instinct to protect his stunning wife. He tossed her to the wolves, reprimanding her harshly without a second thought for her public dignity.

Vivienne swallowed her pride. Her heels clicked softly against the polished floor as she walked confidently toward the head of the table. She raised her crystal glass, maintaining her poise.

"Three years ago, I failed to recognize you," she offered a polite, articulated apology. "That was my mistake. I sincerely apologize. I hope you will choose to be gracious and dismiss the issue. Please do not hold a grudge against a nobody like me."

Instead of accepting, Gideon let out a sharp, chilling laugh. It held zero humor. The sound dropped the temperature in the banquet hall. He leaned forward, a dangerous glint flashing in his dark eyes as he stared her down.

"You think one drink wipes away three years of deep resentment?" he mocked, his voice a low rumble.

Vivienne took a deep breath, meeting his predatory stare head-on. "What will it take to appease your anger, Mr. Kensington?"

Gideon did not hesitate. His hand reached out and wrapped around the neck of an expensive, unopened bottle of strong whisky resting on the table.

"One drink will not cut it," Gideon declared with lethal calm. "But a whole bottle might."

The banquet hall fell into a deathly, horrified silence. Asking a delicate woman to consume that volume of hard liquor was a brutal, physical punishment. It was a dangerous amount of alcohol. Before anyone dared to object, servers rushed forward under Gideon's silent command. They popped the cork and meticulously poured the strong, amber liquor until ten full glasses lined up flawlessly in front of her. The sharp scent of alcohol permeated the air.

Gideon gestured toward the lineup. "Mrs. Winslow. Go ahead."

Vivienne weighed the massive corporate stakes against her own physical limits. Her stomach churned at the sight of the ten overflowing glasses. She looked Gideon dead in the eye, deciding to strike a formal deal.

"If I manage to drink every drop," she stated her terms clearly, her voice steady. "Our past issues vanish. You will officially drop your personal biases against Winslow Construction and grant us, at the very least, a fair shot at the bidding process."

A hint of dark amusement flashed across Gideon's face. "Of course."

Vivienne rolled back her shoulders. She mentally prepared her body to consume the dangerous amount of liquor. She reached out, her delicate fingers hovering over the first glass.

Around them, the fragile silence broke. Loud murmurs swept aggressively through the crowd of elites.

"Look at her husband. He just stands there doing nothing."

"What a pathetic coward. He lets his woman step up to take the brutal punishment meant for his company."

"She is trying to defend his family name, and he acts like it does not concern him. If he cannot even defend his wife, what kind of man is he?"

The snide comments echoed, piercing Damon's fragile ego. His face flushed a sickly, volatile red. A sickening mixture of intense anger and profound public embarrassment boiled in his gut. His reputation was being shredded right in front of the city's most powerful figures. He realized he had to act to save face.

Surging forward, Damon aggressively snatched the first crystal glass directly out of Vivienne's delicate hand. Liquor sloshed over the rim, stinging his skin. He puffed out his chest, desperate to reclaim his shattered masculinity.

"She is my wife," Damon declared loudly to the room, projecting a false sense of bravado. "I will take full responsibility for her past mistakes. I will drink the liquor in her place."

He lifted his chin, staring defiantly at the untouchable billionaire. He fully expected Gideon to sternly refuse the substitution. He figured Gideon wanted to torture Vivienne, to force her to suffer the humiliation firsthand. Damon waited for the rejection that would let him off the hook while looking like a protective hero to the whispering crowd.

Expecting a refusal, Damon was met instead with Gideon's smirk. "You're quite the supportive husband, Mr. Winslow. Go ahead and drink."
