The Familiar Stranger
Vivienne spun on her heels. Her wide, frantic eyes locked onto Gideon’s tall, intimidating figure as he moved effortlessly through the crowd.
Her mind rejected the image before her, screaming that there was no way this man could be him. Her 'Beau Boy' was a creature of the night. Wild. Reckless. Radiating an intoxicating, primal warmth. A vivid memory flashed through her panicked brain. She pictured the dim light of Maplewood Villa. She remembered lazily poking at his hard muscle, tracing the sharp lines of his torso, playfully teasing him by calling him a 'temptress.'
He had reacted in a heartbeat. A dark, wicked smirk pulled at his lips. His large hand reached out, firmly grabbing her chin to pull her close. His warm breath brushed her mouth. "So, you're the queen waiting to be seduced, huh?"
How could that carefree, passionate rogue possibly be the same man as this refined, icy prince who just commanded a room of hundreds with a single step? The dichotomy was dizzying, breaking her sense of reality.
Forcing her stiff legs to work, Vivienne walked to table 99 and took her assigned seat. The birthday ceremony commenced around her, a blur of polite applause and clinking silverware. Yet, a strange creeping shiver slithered down her spine. The sensation set her nerves on edge. She felt eyes on her.
She tilted her head and looked toward the second-floor balcony. Her breath hitched. She locked eyes with Gideon. He stood near the railing, staring down at the crowd, his gaze an unreadable abyss.
Her heart hammered against her ribs. She needed confirmation. Her trembling fingers dug into her evening bag and pulled out her phone. She scrolled to the contact 'Beau Boy' and hit dial. She kept her eyes glued to the balcony. Gideon remained still. A brief wave of immense relief washed over her chest. It isn't him. It's just a coincidence.
That relief shattered a millisecond later. The call connected the exact moment Gideon raised a sleek cell phone to his ear.
A click sounded through the speaker. His familiar, horrifyingly icy voice echoed into her ear. One commanding word: "Speak."
Vivienne lost the ability to breathe. Speechless and paralyzed by dread, she stared up at him. The background noise of the banquet faded into a dull roar. Endless seconds ticked by. Her thumb finally twitched, hitting the red button to hang up the call.
Up on the balcony, Gideon lowered his device. He pocketed his phone in perfect, terrifying synchronization with her action.
Vivienne’s chest squeezed tight. The reality of the situation crushed her. Gideon Kensington, the sole heir to the wealthiest family in the nation, was the man she had kept as a secret, paid lover for three long years.
A torrential flood of memories invaded her mind. She transported back to that agonizing night. Damon had mercilessly packed his bags and taken Clara abroad, leaving Vivienne behind. Drunk, broken, and consumed by spiteful grief, she had stumbled into the Black Stag Club. She ended up spending the night with a gorgeous, nameless male model. She remembered the heat of his skin, the raw intensity of his touch that chased away her despair. Waking up the next morning, she pulled out her checkbook. She boldly handed him a thirty-thousand-dollar check and teased, "How about I take care of you from now on?"
For three years, she faithfully paid him a monthly stipend. She hid him away at Maplewood Villa. She visited him late in the dead of night to use his body, seeking out his warmth as a secret escape from her miserable reality. Whenever the wild, intoxicating ride of their affair felt like it was spiraling out of her emotional control, she decisively ended things. She always assumed she held the power.
Now, sitting in this grand hall, abject horror washed over her. The prey she genuinely believed she had conquered and discarded was a lethal predator. He had been silently watching her every move from the shadows.
Damon returned to table 99. He pulled out his chair and paused, finding his wife looking deathly pale. Deep distress etched lines around her mouth and hollowed out her usually bright expression. Arrogantly assuming her sudden sorrow stemmed from her ongoing family drama with the Carters, he awkwardly took the seat beside her.
Vivienne ignored him. She grabbed a crystal decanter and began to frantically knock back glass after glass of hard liquor. The amber liquid burned her throat, but she needed the numbing effect. She poured another generous measure, the glass clinking erratically against the bottle.
Watching her reckless consumption, Damon frowned heavily. His voice held a sharp warning. "You are drinking far too much."
Vivienne took another gulp.
"This is an important occasion," Damon reminded her, his posture rigid. "Do not embarrass the Winslow family by getting wasted in front of the city's elite."
Slowly turning her head, Vivienne shot him a dizzy, heavily flirting smile. Her eyes shone glassy under the chandelier light. She slurred softly, "What does it matter to you? Are you actually worried about me, Damon?"
He stiffened.
She pouted her lips in a mock display of sadness, swirling the liquor in her glass. "I just went through a tough breakup. Is it a crime to drink a little to ease the intense pain?"
A sudden, unexpected flicker of genuine concern briefly crossed Damon's face. But just as quickly, he masked it. He recoiled, snapping at her. "Drop the dramatic act. Even if you pass out right here on the floor, I wouldn't so much as blink an eye."
Stung but unsurprised, Vivienne fell silent. She lifted her glass again, allowing herself to be consumed by spiraling, chaotic thoughts. The alcohol did nothing to quiet the terrifying questions haunting her.
Did Gideon know all along that she was Damon's wife? What did this untouchable billionaire really want from her?
The extravagant dinner progressed. Waiters moved silently between the tables, clearing plates and refilling wine glasses. The ambient chatter swelled as business deals and alliances took center stage.
Damon stood up. He straightened his suit jacket and shot Vivienne a pointed look. Reaching down, he forcefully grabbed her by the arm, his grip unyielding. "Get up. We are going to offer a formal toast."
He led her through the labyrinth of circular tables toward the main section of the hall. Vivienne stumbled slightly, her mind foggy from the liquor and her knees weak from dread. Every step closer to the front felt like a march toward the gallows.
Eleanor had retired for the evening due to fatigue. Gideon was left in charge, sitting at the head of the main table. He embodied the picture of aristocratic grace. He was currently engaged in politely accepting toasts and respectfully clinking glasses with the other powerful elites. One after another, the city's most influential figures approached him, bowing their heads in deference. Gideon acknowledged each one, his demeanor composed and flawless.
Damon released Vivienne's arm as they reached the perimeter of Gideon's circle. Stepping forward confidently, Damon presented his finest corporate smile. He extended his crystal glass with both hands in a display of total respect, eager to make a lasting impression.
"Mr. Kensington," Damon introduced himself, his voice clear and carrying over the low hum of conversation. "I'm Damon Winslow. Great to finally meet you. Let me raise my glass in your honor."
Vivienne held her breath, her pulse throbbing in her temples. She stared at the polished floor, terrified to meet the gaze of the man sitting at the table.
Gideon's eyes remained cold and flat. His sharp features betrayed zero emotion. He stared directly at Damon, the silent intensity of his gaze freezing the air around them. He showed no intention of reaching out to pick up his own drink.
Damon's smile faltered. His extended arm remained suspended awkwardly in the air, the crystal glass trembling slightly in his grasp. A heavy, suffocating silence settled between the two men.
