The freezing air in the clearing vanishes, leaving my lungs burning for oxygen as the blood-soaked snow beneath my boots begins to feel like suffocating quicksand. It pulls me downward into a bottomless dark void. I stand frozen, staring fixedly at Lucien. A sickening wave of betrayal turns my stomach, twisting my insides until I feel physically ill.
