The Black Invitation
Releasing Arthur's bruised wrist with a final, disdainful shove, Valerie turned her back on her sputtering father. She reached down, enfolding Leo's small, warm hand securely within hers. The cool night air brushed her skin as she strode toward the grand entrance of the Aurum Auction House, radiating an aura of untouchable grace.
Trailing right behind her like a bitter, spiteful shadow, Chloe nursed her stinging cheek. She refused to let Valerie walk away without enduring a crushing public humiliation. As they neared the velvet ropes guarding the heavy ornate doors, Chloe’s voice dripped with malicious sarcasm.
"Valerie, do you really think you can just stroll into the Aurum Auction House?" Chloe sneered, intentionally raising her voice. She wanted to ensure the gathering crowd of onlookers caught every single word. "Only Eastport's top-tier elite are ever granted the strictly issued white invitations. You need one to gain entry."
Chloe eagerly expected the penniless ex-convict to be ruthlessly turned away at the door. She wanted Valerie to become the ultimate laughingstock of the evening, disgraced in front of the very people she once called peers.
Instead of showing a flicker of embarrassment or hesitation, Valerie simply halted. She turned to face her sister, offering a calm, mysteriously serene smile that set Chloe's teeth on edge.
"Who said I don't have an invitation?" Valerie asked, her voice steady and smooth.
Holding Chloe's venomous gaze without blinking, Valerie gracefully reached into her designer clutch. Her fingers withdrew a striking, unique black card, elegantly adorned with intricate, gleaming platinum edges. The dark surface caught the ambient light from the chandeliers inside the foyer.
Assuming the unusual card was a cheap, poorly researched forgery created by a desperate woman trying to save face, Chloe burst into harsh, mocking laughter. The surrounding sycophantic onlookers quickly joined in, their gazes heavy with disdain and degrading pity.
"Valerie, if you're going to forge an invitation, at least do your homework," Chloe remarked, her eyes shining with malicious glee. "Don't you know the invitations for Aurum Auction House are always white?"
Valerie remained oblivious to their mockery. Her dark eyes glinted with a sharp, calculating intelligence. "Chloe, dare to make a bet with me?" she challenged, her tone casual but laced with danger.
Leo looked up, noticing the faint smirk on his mother's face. He squeezed her hand, sensing the trap she was expertly laying out.
"What's the bet?" Chloe demanded, crossing her arms.
"I bet this invitation is authentic, and I can gain entry into Aurum Auction House with it," Valerie stated, holding the platinum-edged card up for all to see.
Confident that such absurd black invitations did not exist within the strict rules of Eastport high society, Chloe smelled undeniable victory. "Alright. And what if you lose?"
"If I lose, I'll kneel and apologize to you," Valerie proposed, laying out the stakes with chilling calm. "But if you lose, you have to kneel and bow to me three times."
Chloe didn't just agree; she loudly enlisted the surrounding wealthy guests to act as official witnesses. She needed to ensure Valerie wouldn't be able to back out of her impending humiliation. "We'll need witnesses for this bet," Chloe declared to the crowd.
"Don't worry, Miss Chloe. I'll be a witness," a man in a tailored suit chimed in readily.
"We will, too," a woman beside him agreed, covering her mouth to hide a condescending smirk.
Chloe thanked them, casting a triumphant glare at Valerie.
Ignoring the escalating taunts, Valerie turned and stepped up to the imposing entrance. She handed her platinum-edged black card to the uniformed door staff. The man barely glanced at the sleek material before his lip curled into a dismissive sneer.
"I'm sorry, but this invitation is counterfeit," the staff member declared in a loud, condescending voice. "You cannot enter."
Chloe immediately erupted into triumphant gloating. "Valerie, you've lost."
Valerie merely cast Chloe a cold, pitying smile. "Not necessarily," she replied smoothly. Her demeanor remained unbothered as she pulled out her smartphone. Her fingers tapped out a quick, decisive message.
"A loss is a loss," Chloe pressed, laughing openly at her sister’s apparent downfall. "You're not thinking of calling for backup, are you?"
"You'll find out soon enough whether it's real or not," Valerie said, her posture relaxed.
Moments later, the heavy ornate doors of the auction house swung open with a resounding thud. Carter Brooks, the distinguished and respected manager, hurried out in a state of visible urgency. He bypassed the velvet ropes and made a beeline directly for Valerie.
The chattering crowd fell into a stunned silence.
Leo lifted his chubby finger, pointing directly at the arrogant staff member who had just rudely refused them entry. "Mr. Brooks, they won't let us in. This gentleman here insists our invitation is fake," the boy explained.
Under Carter's sudden terrifying gaze, the staff member's knees visibly went weak. Panic washed over his pale face.
Carter’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. He stared the man down with an icy, unforgivable coldness, ignoring the staff member's frantic stammers for mercy. "You're fired," Carter declared.
The man collapsed to the marble floor in fear. The brutal, instantaneous dismissal left the wealthy onlookers whispering furiously, wildly speculating about Valerie’s true hidden identity and how she commanded such immediate subservience from the elusive manager.
Carter turned back to Valerie, bowing slightly. "Let's go inside," he said, respectfully inviting her to step into the exclusive space.
Chloe's composed facade shattered into pieces. Indignant and frantic, she forcefully intervened, stepping forward to block their path before Valerie could cross the threshold.
"Wait a minute!" Chloe screeched, her voice shrill with dissatisfaction. "Sir, my sister's invitation is fake! Are you sure she can enter? Even if you work for Aurum Auction House, you do not have the authority to let someone in with a fake invitation!"
Carter paused. He slowly turned to face Chloe, letting out a low, condescending chuckle at her sheer unadulterated ignorance.
"Ms. Kensington, you have no idea what you're talking about," Carter stated smoothly, his voice echoing in the sudden quiet of the entrance. "Just because you've never personally seen a black invitation doesn't mean they don't exist. It simply means you are not important enough to ever receive one."
Standing tall before the stunned elite, Carter continued his public dismantling of Chloe's arrogance. "Only those of the highest status get black invitations. Besides Valerie, Gideon also has one."
He deliberately and expertly kept Valerie's true overarching identity as the rightful owner of the entire auction house a deeply buried secret. He didn't mention that her card, adorned with those gleaming platinum edges, was far more exclusive than the standard black cards.
"Impossible!" Chloe gasped, her heavily made-up face draining of color. She took a staggering step back, shaking her head in frantic denial, refusing to believe the crushing reality unfolding before her.
The surrounding guests stood frozen in equal paralyzed shock. Their minds desperately reeled, trying to comprehend how a disowned, impoverished former prisoner could possibly possess such unimaginable, world-class prestige. They stared at the black card in Valerie's hand, the platinum edges gleaming under the entrance lights, marking a status none of them could ever hope to reach. Chloe's chest heaved as the heavy silence stretched, the crushing weight of her lost wager bearing down on her shoulders.
