A Dazzling Return

The opulent exterior of the Aurum Auction House was bathed in the warm, golden glow of extravagant lighting, creating a perfect stage for the city's elite to parade their wealth and status. Standing right at the center of this sycophantic attention, Arthur Kensington and his meticulously styled daughter, Chloe, eagerly basked in the unyielding admiration of the assembled crowd. Acting every bit the popular, beloved star and the widely presumed impending bride of the formidable Prescott family, Chloe gracefully relished the lavish praise showered upon her. Her carefully crafted smiles hid a calculating mind, as her thoughts eagerly and ambitiously drifted toward the anticipated arrival of Gideon Prescott.

However, this cheerful, self-congratulatory atmosphere was shattered when a sharp, astonished voice called out from the fringes of the crowd. "Hey, isn't that Valerie, who was sent to prison seven years ago?"

The elegant crowd instantly parted like the Red Sea. Valerie confidently approached, stepping directly into the brilliant light like a dazzling, otherworldly vision. Dressed impeccably in a breathtaking, custom-tailored black strapless evening gown that flawlessly accentuated her graceful, elegant figure, she looked nothing like the ruined, defeated woman the city remembered. The smooth fabric highlighted her swan-like neck and delicate collarbones, enhancing her voluptuous frame. Beside her, maintaining a posture of aristocratic poise, stood a delicate, striking little boy in a sharp plaid suit. With his dark hair and refined features, he resembled a charming, disciplined young prince.

Chloe’s radiant smile instantly froze into a grotesque mask. Her carefully maintained facade cracked to reveal a sudden storm of sheer shock and venomous hatred. In Chloe's mind, Valerie was supposed to have miserably perished in the brutal confines of the men's prison she had orchestrated. Yet, against all odds, here she was, standing more radiant and powerfully composed than ever before, blatantly flaunting a bastard child before the entirety of Eastport’s high society.

Disdainful, vicious whispers quickly rippled through the shocked onlookers. "It really is her. Weren't there rumors she died in prison?" one socialite muttered. "Not only did she go to prison, but she brought back a bastard child," another sneered. The crowd mocked Valerie's audacious and shameless return to the pinnacle of high society, loudly recalling the scandalous, unforgettable night when the omnipotent Gideon Prescott had personally handcuffed her seven long years ago. Seeing the handsome little boy standing by her side only served to reinforce the old, malicious rumors of her alleged infidelity.

Furious at what he perceived as a catastrophic, unforgivable disgrace to their carefully maintained family reputation, Arthur stepped forward. His face turned purple with rage, his chest heaving as he glared at her with deep disgust. "You shameless woman! How dare you come back! Take your bastard and get out. You think you can enter Aurum Auction House?" he spat venomously.

Seizing the opportunity to play her favorite role, Chloe quickly adopted a flawless facade of innocent, deeply concerned surprise. "Valerie, I can't believe you're back. I thought you left us to run away with that man. Is this your child? He's grown so much." Her calculated, sweetly poisonous words expertly fueled the surrounding crowd's disgust, vividly painting Valerie as a deceitful, dirty woman who had cowardly absconded to give birth to an illicit child. Smug and inwardly triumphant, Chloe firmly believed she could easily, effortlessly crush Valerie underfoot in front of everyone, exactly just like she did in the past.

But before Chloe could fully savor her manufactured victory, a sharp, ringing slap suddenly echoed fiercely through the cool night air. The impact snapped Chloe's head to the side, leaving a stark red mark on her pale cheek. The entire crowd was left utterly stunned in a breathless, paralyzed silence. Valerie stood tall, her hand slowly lowering, a cold, defiant, and terrifyingly calm sneer playing on her lips.

"Chloe, don't play games with me, or you'll regret it," she warned, her voice dripping with an icy, lethal detachment.

"You wicked woman!" Arthur roared, his paternal rage exploding. He lunged forward, his fists tightly clenched, intent on physically avenging his favorite, beloved daughter.

But Valerie was no longer the weak, fragile, easily manipulated girl from seven years ago. With terrifying speed and seamless precision, she caught Arthur's incoming wrist mid-air. Her grip tightened relentlessly, a vise of iron digging into his skin, until his face rapidly drained of all color.

"Let go! Are you trying to break my hand?" Arthur gasped, his facial features contorting in a pathetic display of sudden, sharp pain as he struggled in vain to free himself.

"I suggest you refrain from provoking me unless you want your hand broken," Valerie stated evenly, her voice devoid of any warmth as she tightened her merciless hold even further to emphasize her point.

Thoroughly humiliated and gingerly nursing her vividly red, stinging cheek, Chloe immediately retreated into playing the tragic victim. Her face transformed into a pathetic picture of exaggerated worry and sorrow. "Valerie, how could you stoop to this? You're only disappointing and hurting Dad," she cried softly.

"Chloe, enough with the act," Valerie retorted, her tone heavy with dripping, undisguised disdain. "I've hit you once, and I won't hesitate to do it again if you push me."

Observing the dark, hidden venom and absolute reluctance burning deep in Chloe's eyes, Valerie offered a chilling, predatory smile. "Don't fret. I'll reclaim whatever the Kensington family owes me."

As she stared down her treacherous family members, her internal resolve hardened into impenetrable steel. Since inheriting this life and this body, she was unyieldingly determined to ensure that every single person who had ever maliciously wronged the original host would face brutal, severe, and inescapable consequences. She had openly declared war on the Kensington family, leaving the silenced crowd and a seething Chloe waiting to see how she planned to bypass the strict auction house entry requirements.
