The Wrong Alpha

POV: KALLIRA

The massive ballroom doors clicked shut behind us, trapping me inside a sensory overload. The sheer wall of noise and overwhelming scents from hundreds of dominant wolves swallowed me the second I stepped inside. Elaborate crystal chandeliers bathed the polished marble floors in golden light, illuminating the elegant clusters of Alphas, Betas, and Lunas from across the territories. They moved in graceful, calculated circles, their voices a low, powerful rumble that vibrated through the floorboards.

Every single one of them represented immense authority and influence.

I kept my arm linked firmly, almost desperately, through the thick bicep of the rigid stranger I had brazenly claimed as my escort at the door. I gripped his dark suit fabric like a lifeline, letting him pull me deeper into the opulent room. The physical contact laid bare the sheer density of his wolf aura. It was heavy, suffocatingly dark, and radiated a specific, ancient kind of power that did not need to bare its fangs or roar to demand total fear and respect.

I forced my breathing to steady, trying to match his composed, unhurried grace.

We navigated past several velvet-draped tables where high council elders conversed. Their sharp eyes flicked toward us, assessing the stranger’s towering frame before glancing dismissively past me. As long as I stayed in his massive shadow, no one recognized the broken, disgraced Luna of Ironhold.

Finally, as we reached a quieter expanse near the center of the grand hall, the stranger broke his silence.

"Are you going to explain what you just did out there?" His voice was a low, smooth rumble that rolled over my skin.

I tipped my chin back to look at his sharp profile. Up close, his cold, gray eyes calculated every micro-expression on my face. He looked even more dangerous under the chandeliers.

"I needed a way inside," I kept my tone even, refusing to cower.

His gaze dragged down to my pale fingers still locked tightly around his arm. "That much is obvious. Now explain why you chose me, out of every powerful man standing in that courtyard, to bluff your way through those doors."

Because your aura terrified the elite guards. Because you looked like a predator who answered to no one. Because I was desperate and running out of time.

Instead of offering a panicked excuse, I gave him a single, uncompromising truth.

"Instinct."

A flicker of genuine amusement chased away the stoic frost in his steel eyes. He found my blunt honesty interesting. The corner of his mouth twitched upward. "Fascinating instinct."

Before he could press the matter further, our quiet, loaded exchange was abruptly severed. A booming, magically amplified voice echoed from the grand balcony, slicing through the ambient noise of the hall.

"Presenting Alpha Torin of the Ironhold Pack!"

My breath hitched hard in my throat. Every muscle in my body locked into stone.

The sea of elite wolves parted in a fluid wave, making way for the grand entrance. Torin descended into the space with a sickening, practiced confidence. His tailored black ceremonial coat fit him flawlessly, the silver Alpha crest gleaming proudly on his lapel under the bright lights. He carried himself like a king, flashing charming, arrogant smiles to the murmuring crowd.

Walking intimately beside him was Giselle.

My sister draped herself in a breathtaking, deep blue silk gown that hugged her curves and pooled like liquid twilight around her heels. She held her head high, offering gracious nods to the surrounding elites, looking exactly like every inch the rightful Luna of Ironhold.

My stomach twisted into harsh, agonizing knots.

I watched them mingle effortlessly with the powerful crowd at the base of the stairs. Several prominent Alphas immediately approached Torin, clapping his shoulder in greeting, while their mates showered Giselle with welcoming praise. They looked so flawlessly natural together. They looked exactly like they belonged in the life they had brutally stolen from me.

My escort leaned down slightly, tracking my frozen stare. "You know them," he said. It was a statement, not a question.

"Yes." I forced the word through tight lips.

"And they know you?"

"Yes."

His sharp gaze shifted from my pale face back to the laughing couple across the room. "Then your entrance tonight just became the most entertaining event of the evening."

Then, the inevitable happened.

Torin turned his head to scan the room for his next political target. His arrogant sweep paused. Across the expanse of the crowded hall, our eyes met.

A profound shock flashed rapidly across Torin’s usually composed face, melting his charming smile into pure, unadulterated disbelief. He stopped breathing. Beside him, Giselle followed his frozen stare. All color instantly drained from her perfectly painted face the moment she spotted me standing among the elites.

Without a second of hesitation, Torin abandoned the senior Alpha he was speaking to. He marched directly toward me, his heavy boots eating up the distance across the marble floor.

My inner wolf snarled, weakly clawing at the surface of my mind, demanding I stand my ground. The stranger beside me did not tense or step away. He simply stood there, observing the approaching storm.

Torin reached us in seconds. His dark eyes burned furiously into mine, raw anger radiating from his skin.

"How did you get out?" Torin demanded softly. He immediately layered his words with a thick, suffocating Alpha tone designed to force me into submission. "You left your locked quarters without permission."

I bit the inside of my cheek hard, fighting the instinctual urge to lower my head.

Before I could fire back, Torin turned his attention to the surrounding eavesdroppers. He raised his voice just enough to ensure the nearby council members caught every word. "You are in no physical or mental condition to attend a high council gathering. You are embarrassing yourself."

Giselle, ever the flawless actress, stepped up beside him to play her part to perfection. She twisted her face into a masterful mask of beautifully crafted, sisterly concern. She reached out, hovering her hand near my shoulder.

"Kallira, please," Giselle whispered loudly enough for others to hear, her voice trembling with fake sorrow. "We know you are unstable. The deep grief of your loss has clouded your mind. You need to rest."

Every single whispered insult. Every disgusting lie. Every calculated gaslighting tactic they had used against me to break my spirit over the past weeks suddenly snapped a vital, restraining thread inside my mind. The fear vanished, replaced by a scorching, blinding fury.

I opened my mouth to shred her saintly facade, but the mysterious escort standing beside me calmly, almost casually, interrupted.

"You are causing an unsightly scene," the stranger said. His tone remained perfectly even, his voice smooth and untroubled as he addressed Torin directly.

Torin’s head snapped toward the towering man. His inner wolf flared with aggressive dominance, his canines lengthening slightly as he sized up the threat. "Step back," Torin commanded fiercely, his eyes flashing. "You are a guest. Stay out of private pack business."

The stranger did not flinch. He did not even blink. He simply offered a slight, chilling smile that promised pure destruction.

"She chose to make it my concern."

Torin scoffed, furious that this unknown man dared to defy an Alpha on council grounds. Torin turned his wrath back to me, lowering his voice into a lethal growl. "I am giving you one last chance. Leave this hall immediately."

Once, the sacred mate bond tying my soul to his would have dragged me out those doors in silent obedience. But that bond had rotted away. It lost its grip on my soul the moment he betrayed me.

I straightened my spine, refusing to back down a single inch. I met his furious gaze head-on.

"Actually," I said, making sure my voice rang clearly over the ambient noise of the hall. "I came here tonight for a very specific reason."

Torin narrowed his eyes, crossing his arms. "And what would that be?"

"To formally request a mate severance before the council."

The air immediately surrounding us froze solid. The soft string music playing in the background seemed to fade into nothingness. Nearby Alphas and their Lunas halted their conversations, turning openly to watch the dramatic confrontation unfolding in the center of the room.

Torin let out a soft, mocking laugh. But I could feel the furious, chaotic tension vibrating through our frayed mate bond. He clenched his jaw, his eyes blazing.

"You cannot do that," he insisted through gritted teeth. "You are my mate. You do not get to just walk away from me because you are upset."

"I am not upset." I shifted my unyielding gaze to my sister. "I am finished."

I watched with immense, undeniable satisfaction as Giselle's saintly mask finally cracked, revealing genuine fear beneath her porcelain skin.

"This conversation is over," Torin declared heavily.

He reached out swiftly, his large hand aiming to grab my arm and drag me out of the hall by force.

Before his fingers could even brush the fabric of my cloak, the stranger moved with blinding, supernatural speed.

One second the man was standing casually at my side; the next, his massive hand closed around Torin’s reaching wrist like a steel vice. He stopped the Ironhold Alpha dead in his tracks.

A shockwave of power rolled out from the stranger. His wolf presence suddenly expanded, crashing over the crowd like a tidal wave, utterly dominating the now dead-silent room. Even the elders sitting at the far tables went rigid.

Torin’s eyes darkened to pitch black as his own wolf rose to answer the challenge. He bared his teeth, straining against the unbreakable grip.

"Remove your hand," Torin warned, a dangerous, guttural growl vibrating in his chest.

The stranger remained wholly unaffected by the threat. His steel-gray eyes stared down at Torin with chilling indifference.

"She said no," he stated simply.

A tense, breathless standoff stretched between them. Dozens of powerful wolves watched in stunned silence. The unspoken challenge of a brutal death match hung heavy and thick in the air. The surrounding elites held their breath. For the first time in his arrogant, entitled life, Torin looked genuinely uncertain of his opponent. His chest heaved as he calculated the monumental strength pinning his wrist.

Slowly, begrudgingly, Torin pulled his arm free. He glared murderous daggers at the unknown man who had dared to physically interfere in a sacred mate bond.

The stranger ignored the glare. He turned his cold, analytical eyes down to me. The raw power rolling off him made my skin prickle, but it did not feel like a threat. It felt like an impenetrable shield.

"Earlier," the stranger said in a calm, calculating tone, "you called me your escort."

My heart hammered aggressively against my ribs. "Yes."

His gaze swept over my face, measuring my resolve. "Is that still true?"

I knew instantly what this meant. Saying yes would irreversibly escalate this situation from a personal dispute into a massive political nightmare. It meant I was publicly putting myself under his protection, defying my own Alpha in front of the most powerful leaders in our world.

I looked at the man who had stepped in front of me when no one else would.

"Yes."

A dangerous, deeply satisfied look flashed briefly across the stranger's stoic face. The subtle shift in his expression was terrifying and magnificent all at once.

He turned his full, crushing attention back to Torin.

"In that case, you should know something," the stranger said quietly. His voice carried a lethal, inescapable weight that echoed through the heavy silence.

He finally released my arm. He stepped forward deliberately, positioning his massive frame directly between Torin and me. The movement physically severed my connection to my former mate, casting me in the safety of his broad shadow.

"She is standing beside the wrong Alpha tonight."
