The Desperate Escape
POV: KALLIRA
The suffocating silence in the stone room threatened to crush my lungs. Giselle’s horrific confession hung in the stale air, thick and poisonous.
*Torin killed father.*
The very moment those words left her mouth, my inner wolf woke. She did not stir weakly like she had for the past several years. She roared to life. She rose inside my chest like an ancient, furious beast that had finally snapped her heavy iron chains. The sheer magnitude of the betrayal vibrated deep inside my bones, demanding blood. The Alpha who raised us, the man who taught us that true power meant responsibility, was dead because Torin found him inconvenient.
Fighting the explosive urge to rip my sister’s throat out, I forced my voice into a hoarse, ragged whisper. "You're lying."
Giselle’s cruel, victorious smile didn't fade a single inch. She simply tilted her head, her eyes gleaming with malicious delight. "Am I?"
Before I could lunge forward to physically demand the truth, the heavy chamber door swung open with a loud groan.
Torin stalked into the room. He was impeccably dressed for the evening’s gathering in a sharp black formal coat. The gleaming silver Alpha crest of Ironhold was pinned proudly to his broad chest. His overwhelming, dominant presence instantly suffocated whatever oxygen remained in the room.
The exact second he crossed the threshold, Giselle fluidly shifted her demeanor. She transformed from a gloating conspirator into a portrait of obedient, delicate softness. She took a submissive step back, lowering her eyes.
But Torin’s sharp, inherently suspicious gaze bypassed her. He zeroed in on me, his heavy weight settling onto my shoulders. He immediately sensed the volatile shift in the room's energy. His inner wolf stirred, a dark storm cloud rolling into the space between us.
"What did she tell you?" he demanded, his voice dropping into a low, rumbling growl.
I forcefully swallowed the imaginary shards of glass tearing at my dry throat. My heart pounded a frantic rhythm against my ribs. So he knew. He knew what she held over me.
"My father." I took a step toward him, my voice shaking with barely contained rage. "What happened to him?"
Torin didn't answer right away. He studied me with an expression of quiet, supreme irritation. He looked unbothered by my visible anguish.
"You are in no position to interrogate me about anything," he informed me coldly. He slipped right into his standard weapon of gaslighting, his tone condescendingly smooth. "You are overly emotional. You just lost a child. Your wolf is officially deemed unstable by the pack physician. Now is not the time for wild accusations."
Rage flared hot and bright in my chest. He was using my trauma as a shield.
"Then when?" I fired back, venom dripping from my words. "After you parade Giselle before the entire council in my place?"
Torin’s expression hardened into dangerous stone at my blatant insubordination. "Watch your tone," he commanded, lacing his words with heavy Alpha authority that made my knees want to buckle.
Giselle placed a light, delicate hand on his sleeve. "Torin, the elders will be waiting."
He gave her a single nod. Without another word to me, he turned on his heel. He looked at the armed guard stationed out in the corridor. "Lock the door securely," he ordered. "We will deal with her behavior later."
He offered his arm to Giselle. She took it with a demure smile, and they walked out together, dismissing me as if I were nothing more than a piece of broken, useless furniture.
The heavy iron lock clicked shut. Their footsteps faded down the long stone corridor.
Silence once again swallowed the room. But this time, I was not drowning in grief. A profound, boiling anger held me firmly above the surface, fueling every breath I took. My wolf paced restlessly inside my mind, her golden eyes burning.
If Torin truly orchestrated the murder of my father, then my life was a farce. My marriage, our pack, and the supposedly sacred mate bond were all built on a foundation of lies. The bond meant nothing. He was not my true partner; he was my captor and my father's executioner.
"Mate severance," I whispered to the empty room.
The words tasted strange, yet perfectly right and justified on my tongue. I knew what I had to do.
Moving with intense purpose, I crossed the room and dropped to my knees beside the window. I dug my raw fingertips into the cold floorboards, prying the loose stone away from its housing. Beneath it lay my father’s last, secret gift to me. I pulled out a small, intricately carved wooden box and popped the lid open. Inside rested a glowing totem shard, a fragment of an ancient relic from his original pack. The moment my skin made contact with the surface, a surge of warmth rushed up my arm.
My father’s stern warning echoed clearly in my mind, his deep voice slicing through the years. *Use it only three times, when your life depends on it.*
I gripped the jagged crystal shard tightly in my palm, feeling its ancient power pulse against my skin. "My life definitely depends on it," I murmured.
I closed my eyes and whispered the ancient runic incantation bound to the crystal. The language was older than any modern pack law. The air in the room shifted, making the hairs on my arms stand up. Instantly, an icy, disembodied voice invaded my mind, coldly asking for my intended destination.
"I want to reach the Primal Council convention," I commanded.
The physical world tilted with a sickening lurch. A rush of raw magic ripped me through space and time, turning my stomach inside out. The stone floor vanished from beneath my boots.
When my vision finally cleared, the stale, suffocating air of my locked chamber was gone. I was standing in a dim, damp street. The night air hit my face, crisp and cold. The faint sound of music and laughter drifted through the evening breeze. Just a short distance away, the massive, glowing glass windows of the grand council venue illuminated the dark sky. Golden light spilled onto the cobblestones.
However, my brief moment of relief shattered before I could even catch my breath.
"Who goes there?" a harsh shout echoed from the darkness.
Pack guards patrolling the perimeter. Panic spiked hot and fast in my chest. They had spotted my sudden arrival. I quickly pulled the heavy hood of my cloak low over my face to hide my identity and broke into a desperate run. I veered off the main street, dodging through a narrow, winding alleyway. My lungs burned with every ragged gasp, my boots splashing through dirty puddles. I kept pushing forward until I burst out of the shadows, emerging directly into the blinding, glamorous light of the main ballroom entrance.
Two heavily armed council guards stepped forward. They crossed their long silver halberds with a sharp clack, effectively blocking my path to the grand doors.
"Invitation," one of them barked gruffly, eyeing my disheveled cloak with deep suspicion.
I froze in panic. My mind went blank. I was unable to speak or produce the required documents because I had none. I stood there, trapped in the glaring light, the sound of pursuing guards echoing somewhere in the distance.
In that terrifying second of hesitation, the heavy, ornate doors of the venue swung open from the inside.
A tall man stepped out into the cool night air. He moved with a calm, terrifying grace. It was the distinct, unhurried authority of a predator who feared nothing in this world. He was dressed in a dark, impeccably tailored suit that stretched over broad shoulders. His eyes caught the light—sharp and unforgiving as winter steel.
As he stepped closer, his aura brushed aggressively against mine. It was suffocatingly dominant. Incredibly dangerous. Undeniably the aura of a supreme Alpha.
Before fear or doubt could stop me, sheer survival instinct took over. I stepped boldly forward, closing the distance between us in two quick strides. I smoothly slipped my arm firmly through his thick bicep, pressing myself against his side.
The formidable stranger’s massive frame stiffened in genuine surprise at my sudden audacity. He glanced down at me, his sharp gaze cutting through the shadow of my hood.
"There you are," I said smoothly, projecting a false, breezy confidence that I did not feel. "I’ve been looking everywhere for you."
Without missing a beat, I turned my chin up confidently to the baffled guards blocking the doors. "This is my escort. We’re already late."
The stranger stared down at the small woman clinging desperately to his arm. His inner wolf visibly stirred beneath the surface of his calm exterior, watching me with dark, predatory interest. But crucially, he did not pull his arm away. He did not expose my blatant lie.
The two guards, intimidated by the stranger's overwhelming Alpha presence and unyielding stare, stepped aside. They lowered their weapons and bowed their heads in submission.
Without giving him time to question anything, I guided him toward the ballroom doors. Tonight had just become far more dangerous.
