Come With Me
Startled but convinced by the sudden chill of Sienna's fingers tightly gripping his bare wrist, Kaelen paused. His footsteps halted abruptly on the pavement outside the chaotic hotel. His gaze flickered over her determined face, searching her eyes for a fleeting second. The raw, unfiltered concern radiating from her expression made him reconsider his swift exit. He looked down at the pale hand wrapped around him, the contrast stark against his own skin, then met her gaze once more.
"If it is truly that important to you, Ms. Caldwell," Kaelen stated, his voice carrying a smooth cadence that betrayed no rush, "I am in."
Within a rapid half-hour, the group was whisked away to the emergency wing of the nearest hospital. The ward buzzed with low, methodical activity as nurses processed their information. A physician ran thorough respiratory tests on both of them, ultimately deciding to hold them overnight for mandatory observation due to mild smoke inhalation. Warren did not put up a single ounce of resistance; he just wanted to ensure his loved ones were safe and suffered no hidden damage from the fire. The paperwork was handled swiftly, securing their stay.
Sienna and Kaelen were placed in adjacent, quiet rooms at the far end of the hallway. The night had taken a massive toll. Exhaustion hit Sienna like a physical blow the moment she stepped into the private room. She had intended to check on Kaelen to make sure he was settling in, but her body betrayed her. She crashed into the stiff mattress of the hospital bed, her battered mind surrendering instantly to the heavy weight of sleep.
Her rest, however, was far from peaceful. It was tormented by a relentless, horrific loop of nightmares dragged up from the darkest depths of her past life. Images flashed fast and unforgiving behind her closed eyelids. She saw the sterile lights of a different room, heard the frantic, terrifying beeping of medical monitors, and then the devastating climax played out again and again. A visceral, terrifying image locked onto her mind: dark crimson blood soaking Damon's hands. The memory of her baby being ruthlessly stolen away, the crushing helplessness that suffocated her, felt agonizingly real. The betrayal clawed at her throat.
Sienna jolted awake, gasping for air. Her chest heaved, pulling in jagged breaths as she fought her way out of the horrific dream. Cold, clammy sweat coated her skin. Her heart pounded a frantic rhythm against her ribs. The steady, quiet hum of the hospital room eventually grounded her, pulling her back to the present reality.
Beside her bed, Warren sat leaning forward, his face lined with deep worry. Seeing her snap awake in such a blind panic, he reached out, resting a warm, grounding hand on her arm. "Hey, sweetheart, you hanging in there?" His voice was thick with paternal concern.
Sienna took a shaky breath, nodding slowly as her vision cleared. But as she glanced past her father's broad shoulder, the atmosphere in the room turned instantly sour. The unwanted presence of her stepmother, Brenda, and her half-sister, Chloe, loomed near the doorway like a dark, suffocating cloud.
Sienna despised them. Just looking at their faces brought bile to her throat. In her agonizing past life, Brenda’s insatiable greed had caused devastating, irreparable chaos during Warren’s critical illness. While her father fought for his life, Brenda had scrambled to seize control of the family affairs, creating a disastrous mess. That rampant greed directly created the fatal vulnerability that allowed Damon to swoop in and steal Sienna’s baby while she collapsed from sheer exhaustion trying to hold the crumbling family together. To Sienna, these two women standing before her were not family. They were the true enemy, dangerous and parasitic.
Feigning exaggerated concern, Brenda rushed forward, her designer heels clicking loudly against the sterile linoleum floor. "Sienna, sweetheart, are you alright? We heard about the hotel fire and just had to rush over. We were so worried about you. How are you feeling?"
Sienna's sharp eyes saw right through the pathetic act. She took in their over-the-top, glamorous outfits—tight party dresses, heavy evening makeup, and glittering accessories. Beneath the medicinal scent of the hospital, her nose caught the faint, lingering smell of cigarette smoke and expensive liquor clinging to their hair.
She sneered openly, her voice dripping with venom. "You guys really showed up, didn't you? Even managed to hit the clubs on your way to a supposed family emergency."
Chloe flushed instantly. An ugly, angry embarrassment twisted her features as she took a defensive, aggressive step forward. "Sienna, don't be so ungrateful! Mom and I were up all night just to be here for you. Is this how you act? She is your stepmother, don't you remember?"
Warren immediately cut through the rising tension before Sienna could even open her mouth to fire back. His voice took on a firm, authoritative boom that echoed off the barren walls, commanding silence. "Watch your tone, Chloe!"
Chloe flinched, shrinking back as Warren stood up. His towering figure cast a harsh shadow over the two women.
He severely reprimanded his youngest daughter, his patience finally snapping. "Your sister just went through a traumatic ordeal, and you do not show a single ounce of genuine concern for her? You walk in here and pick a fight? That is not how our family speaks to one another."
Brenda grabbed Chloe's arm, her face pale. She attempted to smooth things over, her voice weak and shaking. "Warren, I know you care about Sienna, but Chloe is your daughter too. Can't you be a bit more patient with her? We hit the road as soon as we could, but we got the news late."
Warren’s expression only hardened into stone. He glared at Brenda, deeply disappointed by their transparent lack of genuine care. He rigidly laid down the law, his tone carrying a glacial chill. "I have always been patient. I treat them the same, but she listens to your bad ideas. Enough. Sienna needs her rest. If you are not here to show real concern, then you must leave. I will not have you causing any more disturbance in here."
Taken aback by Warren's uncharacteristic harshness, Brenda and Chloe exchanged a humiliated, trapped look. They did not dare challenge him when his temper ran this hot. Quietly and bitterly, they retreated from the room, their high heels clicking a frantic retreat down the hallway. A heavy, simmering silence lingered in their wake, the toxic energy slowly draining from the space.
Sienna leaned back against her pillows, watching her father rub his temples in frustration. Looking to soothe his lingering, palpable anger, she put on a sweet facade. "Dad, don't let this ruin your day," she said gently, her tone light and comforting. "It's not worth it, and you know it. Plus, I'm starving. Could you maybe go down to the cafeteria and fetch us some warm soup?"
Warren paused, taking a deep breath to steady his nerves. He looked at his daughter, his heavy frown finally softening at her thoughtfulness. "You got it, kiddo. Since you're not up for much, some warm soup sounds like it would hit the spot."
As he turned toward the door to grab his coat, Sienna added casually, "Oh, could you grab an extra bowl? Mr Vance next door might be hungry too."
Warren offered a small, tired smile, giving a quick nod. "Got it. Be right back."
The heavy wooden door clicked shut, leaving Sienna alone in the sterile, quiet hospital room. The ambient noise of the building faded into the background. She stared at the ceiling, her mind drifting back to the man in the next room. She quietly debated whether she should get out of bed and check on her handsome neighbor. He had stayed behind in the smoke for her, and dragging him to this hospital was her doing.
Just as the thought crossed her mind, as if perfectly on cue, a soft knock sounded at the door.
Sienna blinked, fully expecting it to be her father returning for a forgotten wallet or his keys. "Come on in," she called out casually, shifting her posture against the pillows to sit up a little straighter.
The heavy door pushed open, and Sienna found herself stunned. It was not Warren.
Kaelen stepped inside. He looked as though he had just rolled lazily out of bed. His dark hair was slightly tousled, lacking its usual rigid, intimidating perfection. He wore a stark white hospital gown, the clinical garment adding a rare touch of disarming vulnerability to his usually composed, untouchable demeanor. Yet, despite the thin cotton fabric and the late hour, his natural, predatory grace remained unmistakably evident in every single step he took into her room. The dim lighting caught the sharp angles of his jaw as he closed the door behind him with a quiet, deliberate click, his gaze locking directly onto hers.
