Blood on the Pavement

AUDREY'S POV

I paced across the intricate Persian rug in my parents' grand living room, my footsteps muffled by the thick wool. My fists were clenched tight enough that my nails bit into my palms, leaving deep crescent marks in the flesh. I welcomed the sharp sting. It was the only thing keeping me grounded, masking the raw anger and profound hurt coursing through my veins. I had just laid my soul bare. I tearfully poured my heart out, detailing exactly how I caught my husband, Gideon, cheating on our matrimonial bed with another woman. I told them about the coldness in his eyes, the lack of remorse, and how he had the audacity to threaten their company if I dared to leave him.

Yet, despite the devastation in my voice, they just sat there on their pristine velvet sofa. They looked at me with exasperated expressions, sighing heavily as if I were the one at fault for bringing this crisis to their doorstep.

“Audrey, you have to understand,” my mother reasoned. She crossed her legs and folded her hands neatly in her lap. Her voice adopted its usual manipulative, soothing tone, the one she always used when she needed me to fall in line, brushing over my shattered heart. “Gideon’s investments in the company, the money... it’s all for the family. We can’t afford to lose that. You know how precarious the market is right now.”

I stopped pacing abruptly. My chest heaved as I stared at them in disbelief. I spoke through tightly gritted teeth, my voice trembling with suppressed rage. “What about me? What about my happiness?”

My father shifted uncomfortably in his armchair, avoiding my tear-filled eyes. He reached up and adjusted his glasses, focusing on a spot on the mahogany coffee table rather than looking at his broken daughter. He insisted I put the family business first. “You need to look at the bigger picture here, Audrey. Gideon’s not perfect, but… staying with him, it’s the only way forward. We rely on his backing.”

“I’m not a business deal, Dad!” I snapped, my voice cracking under the strain. I was shattered by the horrifying realization that my own flesh and blood were blind to my emotional trauma. Every day I spent with Gideon slowly destroyed my self-worth, yet they only saw dollar signs. “What about my future? Do you expect me to just swallow my pride and share my husband?”

My mother’s contoured expression hardened instantly. All pretense of gentle sympathy vanished from her features as she stood up, closing the distance between us. Her voice rose sharply, echoing off the high ceilings. “You have a responsibility to your family, to this company! We didn't raise you to be selfish. Gideon’s your husband, whether you like it or not, and you will make it work.”

I stared at the woman who gave birth to me, feeling a cold numbness spread through my chest. I was suffocating under the crushing, undeniable reality that I was nothing more than a disposable business accessory to my own parents. A pawn meant to secure their luxurious lifestyle. Without another word, I turned around and stormed out of the house. I slammed the heavy front door behind me with enough force to rattle the windowpanes.

I wandered down the long, winding driveway of the opulent Ivory estate. The cool afternoon breeze brushed against my flushed, tear-stained cheeks, doing nothing to clear my chaotic mind. My thoughts raced as I desperately tried to figure out my next step in this living nightmare. Where could I go? Who could I trust when my own parents had just sold me out?

Gravel crunched beneath my shoes as I neared the grand estate entrance. That’s when I saw her.

Nora.

The very woman Gideon had brought into my bed. The homewrecker who had lazily stretched her limbs in my sheets just hours ago.

She was standing by the wrought-iron gates, leaning against the stone pillar. A venomous, triumphant smirk was plastered across her face as she watched me approach. She was waiting for me.

“Audrey,” she sneered. A fake smile etched deep into her face as she pushed herself off the pillar. “I didn’t expect to see you out here. Is everything okay at home? Or are you just too embarrassed to face Gideon after all that happened?”

My jaw clenched so hard my teeth ached. She took a slow, deliberate step closer, her heels clicking arrogantly against the pavement.

“I just wanted to see if you were still playing the dutiful wife,” she continued, her tone dripping with toxic sweetness. “Making a fool out of yourself while he funds your pathetic family.”

Boiling with a white-hot anger, I refused to shrink away. I stepped into her personal space, standing my ground until we were mere inches apart. I could smell the expensive perfume she had worn in my bedroom.

“Don’t think you’re better than me,” I spat the words directly into her face, my voice dripping with disgust. “You’re just a pathetic little whore.”

*Smack!*

Her hand swung rapidly, catching me off guard. She slapped my cheek fiercely, a sharp, resounding blow that sent a stinging heat radiating across my skin. The sheer audacity of her striking me on my own family's property snapped whatever restraint I had left.

Refusing to be the gentle, submissive victim for even one more second, I raised my hand and slapped her right back with equal ferocity. My palm connected solidly with her jaw, snapping her head to the side. I didn't bother waiting for her reaction or the inevitable shock to register in her eyes. I turned sharply on my heel, intending to walk proudly toward my parked car and leave this toxic mess behind.

I took three confident strides.

Suddenly, the ground disappeared from beneath me.

I was falling.

Nora shoved me from behind with all her strength. The unexpected force sent my body pitching forward, my arms flailing wildly in a desperate bid to catch myself. I crashed face-down onto the unforgiving concrete pavement. The brutal impact knocked all the air from my lungs in a single rush.

A jolt of blunt pain shot up my spine, but it was instantly eclipsed by a sharp, agonizing, and terrifying burning sensation deep within my lower abdomen. It felt as though a jagged blade was tearing through my insides.

I groaned, my vision swimming as I tried to push myself up on my scraped, bleeding hands. My arms trembled violently. As I shifted my hips, I realized with mounting horror that something was terribly, horribly wrong.

I felt the terrifying, wet, and unmistakable warmth of thick blood rapidly spreading across my inner legs. The metallic scent hit the air as the crimson liquid soaked through my clothes, dripping down to stain the pale concrete beneath me.

Pure panic flooded my senses. My breathing turned into shallow, ragged gasps as my heart hammered frantically against my ribs.

“Help me,” I managed to whisper weakly, my voice barely a rasp. My vision was already blurring at the edges as the excruciating pain intensified, locking my muscles in place.

Nora walked up slowly and stood directly over my paralyzed body. She looked down at me, her expression smugger than ever. She stared at the broken woman at her feet like she had just won the ultimate prize in a twisted game, devoid of empathy.

“Oops…” she mocked, her tone light and cruel, unbothered by the growing pool of thick blood beneath me. “Guess you’re just too fragile for this.”

I reached out, my fingers trembling weakly against the pavement. Her cruel words grew distorted and distant as I sank further into a heavy, dark blur. I lay there on the cold concrete, helpless. My body was failing me, shutting down rapidly from the severe trauma and blood loss. As the darkness crept in to swallow my consciousness, I caught only the faint, distant sound of an unknown bystander sprinting down the street, frantically shouting for help.

Then, I succumbed to the darkness and blacked out.
