Sanctuary Found
First Person POV.
My head was pounding relentlessly. It felt as if a heavy stone was repeatedly crushing against my skull from the inside out. I forced my heavy, exhausted eyes open. At first, there was only a blur of colors and shadows, but my vision slowly adjusted to the bright lighting of the room. As the shapes sharpened into focus, a gasp tore its way up my raw throat. A strange man was hovering directly over me.
Panic surged hot and fast through my veins. I instantly scrambled backward in sheer terror, kicking away the thick blankets. My back hit the wooden headboard with a solid thud, but I kept pressing myself against it, trying to merge with the wood to get as far away from him as physically possible. My chest heaved with desperate breaths.
He raised his hands, promising he wouldn't hurt me. His deep voice carried a soothing rumble, but I was too trapped in my trauma to trust it. He took a cautious step closer.
"I am Alpha Caspian Cross of the Iron Crest Pack," he stated, his tone steady and commanding, yet laced with an unexpected gentleness. "I give you my absolute word that you are safe here."
I stared at him, my mind racing to process his identity. He studied my confused expression and offered a small, reassuring smile.
"We met two days ago," Caspian gently reminded me. "In a cave on my pack's land. You collapsed." He paused, his brow furrowing as he recalled the moment. "You fainted from the agonizing bond of your mate bedding another woman."
Two whole days? The words echoed in my pounding head. I was utterly shocked. I had never been unconscious for that long. My hand drifted to my chest, pressing against the dull ache where the mate bond resided. The pain of my mate's cruel, remorseless rejection still stung deeply within my chest. Even after he had brutally cast me aside, even after I had felt him thrusting his cock into another female through our severed bond, my foolish, sick mind still missed his touch. I hated the treacherous biology of the wolf inside me that craved a male who saw me as trash.
Caspian’s voice, laced with unexpected and genuine worry, pulled me forcefully from my depressing thoughts. He stepped a fraction closer, his eyes scanning my pale face.
"Who is your mate?" Caspian asked. His gaze sharpened. "And what is the name of your old pack?"
I fiercely shook my head, my breathing picking up speed. Terror gripped my heart beyond belief. If I told him, he would send me back to Kael. He would send me back to the misery and bullying I had just escaped. I clamped my mouth shut. I would rather die than go back to that hell.
Caspian watched me, his broad shoulders rising and falling as he let out a heavy sigh of defeat at my silence. He didn't yell. He didn't use his Alpha tone to force my submission. Instead, he met my terrified gaze with a look of profound sincerity.
"I swear on my position as Alpha," Caspian stated solemnly, his voice resonating with ancient pack magic, "that I will not track them down. I will not send you back. Just tell me your name."
An oath sworn on an Alpha's title was sacred. It bound the wolf's honor to the words spoken. The tension in my shoulders fractionally loosened. I swallowed the dry lump in my throat, my vocal cords protesting as I finally spoke.
"Gia Vance," I breathed out, the sound barely above a whisper.
Caspian offered a gentle smile, clearly relieved that I had given him something to work with. But that warm expression quickly faded into a highly serious gaze. His eyes tracked downward, fixing intently on the undeniable curve of my swollen stomach pressing against the fabric of the nightgown I was wearing.
"Does your mate know you are carrying his pup, Gia?" Caspian asked directly, locking eyes with me once more.
The question hit me like a physical blow. Kael had no idea. If he knew, he would probably force me to get rid of it, or worse, take the pup and throw me to the rogues. My hands protectively curled over my belly.
"No," I firmly replied, my voice gaining a fraction of strength. "He doesn't know. And I want it to stay exactly that way."
Caspian held my gaze for a long moment, searching for any hesitation. Finding none, he nodded slowly. He was silently agreeing to respect my strict wishes. He didn't push for more details. He didn't demand explanations for the messy, broken life I had dragged onto his territory.
Silence settled over the room. I tore my eyes away from the imposing Alpha and took in my surroundings. Taking in the lavish, red-and-gold canopy bed and the beautifully furnished room, my jaw went slack. The thick, luxurious sheets pooled around my waist, softer than anything I had ever touched. The walls were painted a warm cream, and the heavy wooden furniture gleamed with polish.
This wasn't a guest room. This wasn't the pack clinic. The sheer size and grandeur of the space screamed power and authority. I realized with a sudden, jarring shock that I had been brought to the Alpha’s own personal quarters.
"Where am I?" I asked, though I already dreaded the answer.
Caspian ran a hand through his sandy blond hair, a slightly self-conscious gesture that felt out of place on such a powerful man. "You're in my home. In my room."
I stared at him, my eyes wide. Why would an Alpha bring a runaway, pregnant Omega into his own bed?
Sensing my rising panic, Caspian quickly explained. "When you collapsed in the cave, I couldn't just leave you there. You were completely vulnerable. I didn't know the extent of your condition, and I couldn't risk leaving you helpless. My men brought you here."
He didn't have to explain himself to me. He was an Alpha. I was an Omega. In my old pack, I wouldn't have been given the time of day, let alone an explanation from the highest-ranking wolf.
"Thank you," I said, my voice carrying a definitive tone of farewell. I gripped the edge of the mattress and swung my legs over the side, fully intending to stand up and leave. I had overstayed my welcome. I was a burden, a pregnant runaway with a severed mate bond. I needed to get out of his space before he realized what a mistake he had made.
Before my feet could even touch the hardwood floor, Caspian moved. His brow furrowed into a deep, stubborn frown. He planted himself firmly in my path, his large frame blocking my exit.
"I'm not letting you go," he firmly declared.
I froze, my heart skipping a beat. "Why?" I asked, a spark of defiance flaring in my chest despite my fear.
"Because you are pregnant and young," Caspian stated firmly. "Two things that make you an incredibly easy target for predators. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself knowing I let you go out into the dangers of the world in your delicate condition."
His words hit a raw nerve deep inside me. Tears quickly blurred my vision, pooling hot and heavy in the corners of my eyes. No one had ever worried about me like this. No one had ever considered my safety over their own convenience. My throat tightened painfully.
"Why are you being so kind to me?" I asked, my voice cracking, a tear slipping down my cheek. "I am just an Omega. You are an Alpha."
Caspian stopped. Realizing the massive extent of the abuse and neglect I must have suffered, his face softened dramatically. A look of deep sorrow and fierce determination crossed his features as he looked at my defensive posture.
He stepped closer, moving slowly so I could track his movements. He reached out, his large, calloused hand surprisingly gentle as his fingers found my face. He gently lifted my trembling chin, forcing my tearful eyes to meet his intense, amber gaze.
"You are safe now," Caspian vowed, his voice a low, steady rumble that vibrated straight through to my bones. "No one will hurt you here. Not your Alpha. Not your mate. Not your pack members. Nobody."
I stared into his eyes, searching for the lie, the catch, the hidden cost of his protection. But there was nothing but pure, unadulterated sincerity.
"I swear on my life and the moon, Gia," Caspian continued, the weight of his oath pressing into the very air around us. "I will protect you until my very last breath."
More tears spilled over my lashes, tracing wet paths down my cheeks. His thumb caught one of the tears, wiping it away with a startling tenderness. Seeing the undeniable honor and pure sincerity radiating in his eyes, I knew in my soul I had found the kind of leader I so desperately craved. The kind of leader who protected the weak instead of preying on them.
I forced back a sob and offered a tearful smile, my lips trembling. "Thank you, Alpha Caspian," I whispered, the gratitude threatening to overwhelm me. "You will not regret this."
He smiled warmly back, his thumb trailing away from my cheek as he finally stepped back. "I know I won't. And please, just call me Caspian when we are in private."
I blinked, surprised by the request. Before I could ask why, a faint, endearing blush stained his sharp cheekbones. He rubbed the back of his neck, suddenly looking flustered.
"Since the pack house is entirely full right now," Caspian hurriedly explained, his words tumbling out a bit faster than before, "you will be living directly under my roof. Here."
My eyes went wide again, but the panic from earlier was gone, replaced by a blossoming sense of awe. I was going to live in the Alpha's house. I was going to be under his direct protection.
Caspian cleared his throat, the blush lingering on his cheeks. "I'll let you rest. I need to go prepare for dinner. I will come get you when it's ready."
Without waiting for my response, he turned and rushed off, the heavy wooden door clicking shut softly behind him.
The room fell into a peaceful silence. I let out a long, shaky breath, the tension finally draining from my sore muscles. Sighing deeply, I turned back and sank into the luxurious, soft bed. The red-and-gold sheets enveloped me like a warm embrace. I pulled the blanket up to my chin, staring up at the ornate canopy overhead.
I could easily get used to this immense comfort. For the first time in years, the crushing weight of survival didn't sit heavy on my chest. I placed my hands back over my swollen stomach, feeling a tiny flutter of movement from my pup. A fragile, tiny spark ignited in the dark corners of my heart. I was finally daring to hope that my life would no longer be a messy, painful nightmare, now that I was far away from my old pack and the mate who had completely shattered me.
