The Annulment Condition

Clara sneered. The harsh, sterile lighting of the police station cast long shadows across the hallway, highlighting the naked fury contorting her father's face. The sickening reality that her fiancé, Elias, had been sleeping with Lila, her own half-sister, still gnawed violently at her insides. The sheer audacity of their betrayal made her blood run cold. She swallowed the metallic taste of copper lingering on her tongue.

"Just the truth," Clara said, her voice a steady blade cutting through the heavy air.

"You little wretch!" Vera shrieked. The elderly woman’s frail chest heaved. She raised her thick wooden cane, aiming a punishing strike right at Clara’s shoulder.

Before the heavy wood could connect, Sylvia swooped in. She intercepted the blow, grabbing the older woman’s arm as her own face twisted into a mask of sickeningly sweet concern. "Mom, please. Let’s just talk. Don’t upset yourself. Your health matters the most."

Sylvia turned her gaze toward Clara. The fake gentleness in her eyes made Clara’s stomach turn. "Clara, you shouldn’t upset your grandmother like this. Lila is at fault here, yes. You can give her a piece of your mind later. But your grandma is old. Be the bigger person. Do not talk back."

A passerby might have seen Sylvia’s soft, considerate expression and assumed she was a saint trying to mend a broken family. Clara knew better. She let out a short, hollow sound. The corners of her lips curled into a sharp, mocking smile.

Seeing that smirk, Arthur lost whatever thin shred of restraint he had left. He ignored his daughter's split lip and the obvious pain radiating from her posture. His mind remained fixed solely on the immense public humiliation the prestigious Vance family now faced.

"Are you proud of yourself?" Arthur roared. His voice bounced off the concrete walls. "You dragged your own sister and your fiancé into a police station! You turned the Vance family into a public spectacle. Do you even remember who you are? Your sister is a rising actress! How is she supposed to show her face on a set after the mess you created today? Did you even spare a single thought for her career? Or the relationship between the Vance and Thorne families?"

Clara stood her ground. "Is that all you care about? The family name? The stock prices?"

Arthur stiffened.

"They are the ones who slept together," Clara said. Her tone carried no warmth. "Why are you blaming me? What did you expect me to do? Should I have quietly shut the hotel door, turned a blind eye, and wished them a happy life?"

Arthur’s jaw clenched. The veins in his neck bulged under his collar. "You cannot even keep your own man, and yet you stand here blaming others for stealing him! If you had any worth, he never would have looked at your sister. Instead of reflecting on yourself, you point fingers. You are just like your useless mother!"

A tremor ripped through Clara’s frame. The insult struck deep, shattering the numb facade she had tried to build. She stared at the man who was supposed to protect her.

Five years ago. The memory surfaced with the force of a drowning wave. The devastating discovery of Arthur’s illicit affair. The sudden arrival of Sylvia and a teenage Lila. The horrifying realization that her father had maintained a second family for years. The sheer despair had driven Clara's mother to the edge. Unable to bear the betrayal, she drove her car straight into the freezing currents of the river, ending her own life.

The Vance family barely waited for the funeral to end before they packed Clara away. They shipped her abroad, washing their hands of the grieving daughter, leaving her abandoned in a foreign country. If not for the small inheritance her mother left behind, Clara would have starved on the streets.

Hearing Arthur spit on the memory of the woman he destroyed froze the last lingering embers of warmth in Clara’s chest. The agonizing sorrow hardened into an impenetrable armor of ice.

A dark, mocking laugh tumbled past her lips. It echoed down the empty corridor.

"You are right," Clara said, embracing the insult. Her gaze locked onto Sylvia. "I am useless. After all, I didn't have a professional mistress for a mother. I failed to inherit the treacherous ability to seduce other women's men. A skill Lila clearly perfected. She truly surpassed you, Sylvia. My eyes are opened to a whole new world today."

Sylvia’s face drained of all color. Her gentle mask shattered.

"What did you just say?!" Arthur bellowed, taking a threatening step forward. He raised his hand, ready to deliver a physical retaliation for her biting words.

"You heard every word!" Clara fired back, not flinching an inch.

"That is enough!" Vera barked, her cane slamming against the floor tiles.

Arthur paused. Sylvia quickly tugged at his sleeve, pointing down the hall.

The heavy metal door of the interrogation room swung open. Footsteps echoed against the linoleum. Elias Thorne stepped into the harsh light of the hallway, followed closely by Lila and Elias’s father, Robert Thorne.

Lila clung to Elias’s arm like a lifeline. Her delicate features were pale, her eyes rimmed red from fresh tears. She looked the picture of tragic fragility.

Seeing the crowd of Vance family members, Lila bit her trembling lip. "Clara," she called out in a weak, muffled voice. She took a hesitant step forward, looking at Clara guiltily. "I am so sorry. I didn’t expect you to come. Elias and I... we didn’t mean for this to happen. Please forgive us."

Clara stared at her sister. The fragile apology held zero remorse. It was a calculated performance meant to garner pity. Clara offered no response, keeping her expression locked in stone.

Robert Thorne cleared his throat. He smoothed the lapels of his tailored suit, stepping forward with the pragmatic, business-like demeanor of a man walking into a boardroom negotiation.

"The Thorne family is at fault here," Robert stated, his voice even and detached. "We cannot undo what happened tonight. Name your financial compensation. We will satisfy your demands to keep this scandal quiet."

Clara let out a dry scoff. "Compensation? You think you can throw a checkbook at me and wash this away?"

Robert frowned. A flicker of guilt crossed his features before he cast a furious glare at his son. "You useless fool. Look at the mess you created. Step up and explain yourself."

Elias bristled under his father's reprimand. He stepped forward, his posture rigid. He looked at the woman he had dated for six years. There was no affection in his gaze. He offered no explanation, no groveling, no attempt to salvage the bridge he burned. Instead, his expression radiated a deep, unyielding resentment.

"Clara," Elias said, his voice stripped of the warmth she had known. "We are not suitable for each other. Let's annul our engagement."

The words sliced through Clara’s chest like a dull, serrated knife. Six years. Six years of building a foundation, planning a future, tying her life to his. She searched his eyes, desperately looking for a single flicker of guilt, a fleeting shadow of the man who had promised to stand by her. She found nothing but cold, calculated rejection.

The icy knot in her throat tightened. Then, mercifully, something deep inside her finally gave way. The lingering attachments, the desperate hope, the shared history—it all snapped. She was free.

Clara lifted her chin. The corners of her lips curved upward into a chilling, sarcastic smile.

"Alright," Clara stated plainly. "I agree."

Elias blinked. The arrogant certainty melted from his face, replaced by suspicious surprise. Her easy compliance unsettled him. "Are you serious?"

Clara did not miss a beat. Her voice rang clear and methodical through the corridor. "I will agree to the annulment. However, I demand the immediate transfer of the three highly profitable companies the Thorne Group recently acquired. That is my rightful compensation."

A stunned silence blanketed the hallway. Then, Arthur erupted.

"Are you out of your mind?!" Arthur screamed, his face flushing dark red. "You greedy wretch! You dare demand that much? We are not even married yet! Where are your manners?!"

Clara did not spare her father a glance. She kept her eyes locked on Robert Thorne.

Robert narrowed his eyes. The demand was exorbitant, a blatant extortion. But his mind raced through the mathematics of the situation. A prolonged PR nightmare involving a cheating heir, a furious ex-fiancée, and a rising actress would tank the Thorne Group’s shares by morning. The financial bleeding from a public scandal would easily eclipse the value of those three subsidiaries.

Robert raised a hand, cutting off Arthur's screaming.

"I will agree to your terms," Robert said calmly.

Elias’s jaw dropped. "Dad!"

"Quiet," Robert snapped at his son. He turned back to Clara. "I will have the legal team transfer the assets the exact moment you hand over your physical half of the binding marriage agreement. We are done here."

With the brutal negotiations concluded, Robert turned on his heel and marched toward the exit, his lawyers trailing behind. Arthur glared at Clara one last time, huffing in deep disgust. He, Sylvia, and Elias moved to support the frail but furious Vera, leading the cursing old woman down the corridor in a storm of anger.

Clara stood still until their footsteps faded. A deep, bone-weary exhaustion settled over her shoulders. She wanted nothing more to do with the cheating pair. The air in the station felt suffocating. She pivoted on her heel, aiming for the glass exit doors, desperate for the cool night air.

Before she could take more than three steps toward freedom, a figure darted into her path.

Lila physically blocked the hallway. Her pale face was drenched in fresh, dramatic tears. She reached out with lightning speed and tightly grabbed Clara's arm.

"Sister!" Lila cried out. Her voice was a trilling, overly theatrical wail designed to catch the attention of the remaining officers and lingering staff in the precinct.

Lila’s manicured nails dug into Clara’s sleeve. "Sister, please! I am so sorry! I truly didn’t mean to fall in love with Elias! Please don't be mad at us!" She choked out a loud sob, her shoulders shaking with manufactured force as she staged her pitiful display of victimhood. "I know it is all my fault! If you are angry, punish me! You can yell at me! You can hit me to vent your anger! Just please don't hate me!"
