The Betrayal at Rosewood

Clara Vance paused in the dimly lit, opulent hallway of the Rosewood Hotel, her chest heaving as she tried to catch her breath. The thick, plush carpet muffled her hurried footsteps. In her hands, she held a discrete cardboard box containing a sex toy delivery for her side business. It was supposed to be a routine drop-off, a standard, faceless transaction ending with a quick exchange of cash so she could head home.

She checked the gold-plated room number one last time and raised her knuckles. Before she could even knock, the unmistakable, fevered moans of a man and a woman drifted through the heavy wooden door, freezing her in her tracks.

"Elias, ah... stop!" A woman’s breathless, wet groan echoed from inside the suite. "It seems our stuff has arrived."

"Wait, I'll get it." A man's deep, rough voice replied amidst the rustling of sheets.

Clara stood outside, her lips curling into a dry smirk. They could not even wait for their delivery. So eager.

The lock clicked. The heavy door creaked open, spilling warm yellow light into the corridor. Clara kept her rehearsed professional indifference intact, keeping her eyes down as she lifted the box. "One hundred and fifty dollars. Cash?"

The man standing opposite her did not move.

A stifling silence stretched for two grueling seconds before a hesitant, ragged voice broke the quiet. "Clara?"

Her professional detachment shattered instantly. She snapped her head up.

Standing before her, clad only in a loose, white hotel bathrobe, was Elias Thorne. The man who had been her devoted boyfriend for the past six years. Water dripped from his messy hair onto his bare chest. A stark, blinding panic flashed across his handsome features the second he registered her face in the hallway.

"Elias, who is it?" the female voice called out from the bed inside the suite.

Hastily trying to cover his tracks, Elias jerked his head back toward the room. "Nothing," he lied through his teeth, his voice straining. "Just the delivery man."

Before Clara could process the magnitude of the betrayal or utter a single syllable, Elias lunged. He forcefully shoved a crumpled wad of cash into her trembling hands, aggressively snatched the sex toy delivery box from her grip, and slammed the door shut right in her face.

The heavy thud echoed down the empty corridor.

Clara stood frozen. Her fingertips shook against the crumpled bills. The color washed from her face, leaving her pale as a sheet. Her mind reeled from her own blindness and foolishness. Six years of absolute devotion, reduced to a slammed door and dirty money. She bit the inside of her cheek hard, tasting copper, forcefully holding back the hot tears welling in her eyes. She refused to be a victim.

A cold sneer twisted her lips. She stared at the cash, realizing how ignorant she had been. Pulling her smartphone from her pocket with trembling but resolute fingers, she dialed the Alta City Police Department.

"I want to report illegal activity," she stated, her voice dropping to a glacial chill. "I discovered someone taking drugs and engaging with a prostitute at the Rosewood Hotel. The room number is..."

Thirty minutes later, the serene entrance of the Rosewood Hotel transformed into a chaotic circus. Flashing red and blue lights sliced through the dark night. Swarms of uniformed police officers secured the perimeter while aggressive media reporters shoved their way forward, carrying heavy cameras and microphones.

The glass doors slid open. Officers escorted Elias out of the lobby.

The media frenzy erupted. Blinding camera flashes exploded in rapid succession.

"Mr. Thorne! Someone reported you taking drugs and hiring prostitutes! Is this true?"

"Mr. Thorne, as the heir of the Thorne Group, do you think it is proper for you to do this?"

"Who is the woman with you? Rumors say she is a popular actress! Can you confirm?"

Bombarded with relentless, humiliating questions, Elias snapped. Unable to bear the public degradation, he lost his temper. "Get the fuck out of my way!" he roared savagely at the journalists, shoving a microphone away.

The reporters flinched but kept their cameras rolling.

In the chaos, Elias’s frantic gaze locked onto Clara standing near the police cruisers. His eyes burned with pure hatred. He ripped his arm against the officer's grip and hissed at her.

"Is this what you want?"

Instead of shrinking back, Clara stepped forward. A bone-chilling, mocking smile hooked the corners of her lips.

In full view of the snapping cameras and the police, Clara raised her hand and delivered a resounding, stinging slap across Elias’s face. The sheer force of the blow snapped his head sharply to the side. A stark red handprint bloomed across his pale skin.

The chaotic crowd went dead silent.

A nearby police officer stepped forward. "Ma'am..."

Clara feigned innocence. She rubbed her stinging wrist and offered a faint smile. "Sorry. My hand slipped."

Her voice dripped with deep resentment as she locked eyes with her cheating boyfriend. "Do you think I would care about a piece of scrap paper that fell into the toilet? You can consider that slap as interest. I will collect the remaining principal within three days."

Elias’s chest heaved. A pale panic pierced through the hatred in his eyes. "What... what principal?"

Clara raised an eyebrow. "Do you really want me to remind you?"

Elias swallowed hard, his face draining of color. Seeing they had nothing left to say, the police officer waved his hand and dragged the panicked Elias into the back of the cruiser.

As the patrol cars pulled away with sirens wailing, the journalists rushed off to file their stories. The swarming crowd dispersed, leaving the hotel entrance empty once more.

Clara exhaled, letting the cool night air soothe her lungs. She turned to leave, but her gaze caught a figure observing her from a short distance away.

It was a young man leaning against a concrete pillar, clad in a pristine dark suit. His deep, penetrating eyes locked onto hers. He possessed an aura of noble aloofness that felt entirely out of place in this sordid night. Clara stared at his sharp jawline. She found his face vaguely familiar, a memory tugging at the edge of her mind.

However, her eyes drifted to a respectful secretary standing behind him and a sleek silver Porsche parked nearby. She dismissed her curiosity immediately. Someone like her could not possibly associate with a man of his obvious status. Without a second glance, she turned and seamlessly blended into the bustling city traffic.

Watching her figure retreat, Caleb Sinclair uncrossed his arms.

Seth Lee, his secretary, stepped forward. "Mr. Sinclair, do you mean the person the police took away? He seems to be the son of the Thorne Corporation owner. He just returned from abroad..."

Caleb frowned. "I am talking about the girl."

Seth blinked, confused. "What girl? My apologies, I will investigate her identity right away..."

"No need," Caleb halted his secretary’s eager offer. A subtle, intrigued smile hooked the corners of his lips as a sudden memory dawned on him.

He thought to himself that it was indeed her. Finding her to be a truly interesting woman, he slipped his hands into his pockets and strode toward the hotel elevator.

Meanwhile, Clara sat in the harsh, fluorescent-lit precinct of the Alta City Police Department. After completing her official statement, she stepped out into the main lobby.

She was suddenly ambushed. The heavy precinct doors flew open as her family barged into the station in a chaotic storm.

Her grandmother, Vera, charged forward without a single word. The elderly woman’s eyes burned with manic fury. She raised her hand and delivered a vicious, forceful slap directly to Clara’s face.

The sharp crack echoed. Clara stumbled back. A metallic taste of copper blood instantly flooded her mouth.

She slowly turned her head. Her freezing cold eyes stared at the angry crowd standing across from her.

Vera’s frail body trembled with untethered rage. "You wretch!" she screamed, her shrill voice bouncing off the concrete walls. "You knew perfectly well that the woman inside that room was your own sister! Yet you still called the cops on her? Are you trying to drive me to an early grave?"

Clara stood unfazed. She raised her thumb and slowly wiped the trail of fresh blood leaking from her lower lip. She looked up, fixing Vera with a sharp, mocking gaze.

"My sister?" Clara asked, her voice steady. "Are you referring to Lila?"

Vera slammed her cane against the floor. "What are you acting dumb for? Vicious rumors are already spreading like wildfire! Everyone is saying the Vance family daughter seduced another woman's fiancé! You are the one who caused all this! You laid all the blame for this scandalous fallout directly at our feet!"

Clara lowered her eyelashes. A soft, dark laugh tumbled from her throat. It was a cold sound, devoid of any warmth.

She looked at the faces of her family members, piecing the grotesque puzzle together. The betrayal ran deeper than she could have ever imagined. She verbally destroyed their narrative with surgical precision, feigning an expression of mild surprise.

"So that woman was her," Clara said. "I thought it was just some random prostitute eager for cash, but it turned out to be my very own sister?"

Standing firmly behind Vera, Arthur Vance’s face turned an ugly shade of purple. The veins in his forehead pulsed.

"You little bitch!" Arthur erupted into a roaring fury, his voice booming through the police station as he demanded to know what she just said, leaving Clara bracing for the imminent explosive confrontation.
