The Irresistible Scent
Kaelen's POV
Fingers dragged up my bare chest. Manicured nails scraped over my skin, tracing light patterns over my stomach. I groaned, cracking my eyes open against the harsh morning light filtering through the bedroom blinds. My head pounded. A vicious hangover hammered against my skull from last night's early birthday celebrations with the guys. Today was the morning of my eighteenth birthday party. The day my life changed.
Vera shifted beside me on the mattress. She had shown up at my apartment last night claiming she just wanted to talk. We maintained a casual arrangement, a physical convenience and nothing more. I made the boundaries clear on multiple occasions, but she stubbornly refused to grasp the concept. She lived in a delusion, obsessed with the idea of wearing the Luna crown.
I grabbed her wrist, pulling her hand away from my chest. I sat up and rubbed my temples, trying to ease the throbbing pain behind my eyes.
"Where are you going?" Vera murmured from the sheets. She rolled onto her side, propping herself up on one elbow. A seductive smile played on her lips. "What about a repeat of last night?"
I scoffed, tossing the blankets back and swinging my legs over the edge of the bed. I only entertained her presence when I was a few bottles deep. Sober, I possessed zero tolerance for her manipulative games. She craved power, and her transparent attempts to climb the pack ranks grated on my nerves.
"I have things to do, Vera," I grumbled, my voice rough from sleep. I stood up and headed straight for the bathroom without looking back. "Just get out of my house."
The rustle of sheets echoed behind me. "Don't talk to me like that, Kaelen!" she screamed. Her tone shifted in a fraction of a second, morphing from seductive to desperate and deranged. "I'm your future Alpha female!"
Hearing that audacious claim, my inner wolf surged. He clawed his way to the surface, taking immediate control of my body, furious at her blatant disrespect. He possessed a rigid, primal standard. The only woman he would ever accept as our Luna was our true, fated mate.
I stopped in my tracks. I turned slowly to face her, letting my gaze lock onto hers.
"You will never be my Alpha female," I growled venomously.
My vision tinted red before bleeding into a terrifying pitch black. My Alpha aura exploded in the room, heavy and suffocating. The air grew dense. I let my command slip effortlessly through my vocal cords, letting it boom against the walls.
"Get out now."
Vera flinched. The color drained from her face as the sheer force of the order physically hit her. She scrambled out of the bed, grabbing her clothes in a frantic rush. She raced out of the bedroom in stark terror, slamming the heavy wooden door shut behind her.
I stood in the silence, feeling my wolf pacing in the confines of my mind. His wild emotions rolled off me in heavy, resentful waves. He despised Vera. He instinctively craved the arrival of our mate, his instincts heightened by my eighteenth birthday. But I firmly and mercilessly shut him out.
I refused the idea of a mate. I enjoyed my freedom. I was young, stepping into my father's heavy Alpha title, and I possessed no desire to be tied down by the demanding responsibilities of caring for a Luna. I wanted to rule my pack, run with my men, and live on my own terms without a mate tethering my every move.
Pushing down my wolf's murderous, roaring frustration, I stepped into the bathroom. I turned the shower dial to cold, letting the icy spray wash away the remnants of the night. As I grabbed a towel from the rack, a familiar buzzing sensation vibrated in my head. My Third in Command, Tobias, was pushing against my mental shields.
I opened the mind-link. "What do you want, Tobias?" I questioned, my tone laced with morning irritation.
"I've been trying to contact you for the past five minutes," he replied, his voice trailing off with a distinct hint of amusement. "So, who has been keeping you busy?"
I could practically see the arrogant smirk on his face, his eyebrows wiggling in silent mockery. I grabbed a shirt from my closet, ignoring his smug teasing.
"Shut up, Tobias. What do you actually want?"
He let out a loud laugh through the link. "The boys and I are going out to get all the alcohol for tonight's party. Did you want to come?"
"Yeah. Meet me downstairs in five," I ordered, preparing to sever the connection.
"I don't get how you pull so many girls if you're that quick," he chuckled.
I let out a low, warning growl, making him immediately snap the mind-link shut. I tossed the towel aside and pulled on a pair of black jeans and a tight-fitted dark shirt. I grabbed my phone from the bedside table, shoving it into my pocket as I walked out of my bedroom.
For the past few months, I occupied the lavish top-floor apartment of the pack house. It was a transition phase, giving me my own space as I prepared to inherit the Alpha duties. The floor featured a massive living area, a modern kitchen, an office, and two bedrooms. The lower levels housed the younger pack members, teens, and newly mated couples who preferred the communal environment over living in separate territory houses. We were even in the process of renovating my old childhood home to accommodate our rapidly growing numbers.
I headed downstairs, bypassing the large first-floor kitchen and games room, making my way to the underground garage. My Second in Command, Callum, stood near my cars, his arms crossed over his chest. His eyes were narrowed into a fierce glare directed at Tobias's back. Tobias stood there running his mouth, cracking stupid jokes that clearly tested Cal's limited patience. Dane leaned against a concrete pillar, scrolling through his phone.
"Let's get going," I announced, tossing my car keys into the air.
Tobias snatched them before they reached my hand. He flashed a triumphant grin. "I'm driving."
I didn't have the energy to argue with his whining. We all piled into the sleek black SUV. Tobias slid into the driver's seat, Cal took shotgun, and Dane and I climbed into the back. As soon as the garage doors opened, Tobias eased the vehicle onto the main road at a painfully slow crawl.
"Tobias, will you go faster," Cal gritted through his teeth. He hated slow drivers, a fact Tobias knew and weaponized for his own entertainment.
"That's what she said," Tobias smirked, a smug look spreading across his face. He checked the rearview mirror, clearly impressed with his own tasteless joke, chuckling at Cal's deadpan expression.
Dane snorted from the seat beside me. Cal didn't say a word. He just reached over and delivered a hard, resounding smack to the back of Tobias's head.
"Hey, don't hit the driver," Tobias scowled, rubbing his neck as he glared at Cal through the interior mirror. "Especially when he's this good-looking."
I rolled my eyes, leaning back against the leather headrest as we finally picked up speed. We arrived at a secluded liquor store near the territory borders. The shop belonged to an older werewolf in our pack, a former elite tracker who retired after sustaining a brutal leg injury during the territorial wars a decade ago.
He offered a respectful nod as we walked through the glass doors. We bypassed the standard human liquor and headed straight for the back room. We needed the werewolf-grade tonic. It was a potent, bitter-tasting brew laced with heavy sedatives and medicinal herbs, discovered a few years back. It was the only substance strong enough to bypass our accelerated healing factors and actually get a werewolf drunk.
We bought him out. We carried heavy wooden crates out to the SUV, stacking them in the trunk until the suspension groaned. Tonight was going to be massive. It was my last true night of reckless freedom before the Alpha ceremony solidified my responsibilities forever.
Hours later, the sun dipped below the horizon, and the pack house descended into absolute chaos. The music thumped through the floorboards, vibrating up my legs. The first floor was a sea of grinding bodies, flashing lights, and spilled drinks.
I lounged on the second-floor balcony area, leaning back against a plush leather sofa with a group of my top enforcers. I was thoroughly feeling the heavy, buzzing effects of the tonic in my bloodstream. My limbs felt loose, and the constant hum of my Alpha blood settled into a dull, manageable roar. Tobias sat across from me, relentlessly urging me to take more shots, still trying to beat me in a drinking contest he was destined to lose.
Suddenly, a loud, obnoxious voice cut through the heavy bass of the music.
"Kael... Kaelen... Kaelen!"
I turned my head, my jaw clenching. Vera stumbled messily into the second-floor lounge. She was heavily intoxicated, her movements sluggish and uncoordinated. She scanned the room, her eyes zeroing in on me. A messy grin stretched across her flushed face.
She swayed toward the sofa, exaggerating the swing of her hips. She pushed her chest out, putting on a dramatic show for everyone watching. She reached my seat, glaring viciously at the other girls standing around our group, silently daring them to challenge her imaginary claim.
Without warning, she dropped right onto my lap. She leaned heavily into my side, her breath reeking of cheap alcohol and tonic. She dragged a hand up my shoulder and whispered seductively into my ear, "You want me to come over tonight?"
My patience vanished. The tonic buzz crashed into a wall of cold irritation. I refused to entertain her pathetic, drunken emotional games for another second.
"No, Vera," I replied sternly, keeping my voice low but laced with enough authority to make her flinch.
Before she could start a drunken argument or burst into tears, I firmly grabbed her waist. I lifted her off my lap with one fluid motion, setting her firmly on her feet. I didn't give her a chance to reach for me again. I turned on my heel and walked briskly down the hall, seeking the quiet refuge of the second-floor bathroom.
I splashed cold water on my face, gripping the edges of the porcelain sink. My wolf had been inexplicable on edge all evening. He paced back and forth in my mind, scratching at the mental barriers I erected, restless and aggressive. The tonic usually quieted him, but tonight, he fought against the sedative effects with a wild, feral energy.
I dried my face and pulled the bathroom door open.
The moment I stepped out into the hallway, it hit me.
A lingering, enchanting scent slammed into my senses like a physical blow. It was a mixture of rain, pine, and something intoxicatingly sweet. It bypassed my human rationality and struck straight at the core of my soul.
My wolf went into a full-blown frenzy. He roared, shattering my mental walls into a million pieces. The primal demand echoed through my skull, urging me to move, to hunt, to follow the scent immediately.
My heart hammered against my ribs. The air felt thick, charged with an invisible electricity that pulled me forward. The highly intoxicating aroma physically dragged me toward the stairs. I descended the steps two at a time, my boots hitting the hardwood with heavy, determined thuds. I wove through the crowded kitchen, shoving past heavily drinking pack members, ignoring their confused protests.
The scent grew stronger, leading me straight into the packed, music-filled living room on the first floor. The bass vibrated in my teeth. Strobe lights flashed across hundreds of moving bodies.
My frantic wolf seized control of my enhanced eyesight. My vision sharpened, aggressively scanning the sea of people. I filtered out the faces, the noise, the chaos, searching for the source of the magnetic pull.
Then, I saw her.
She stood near the edge of the makeshift dance floor, laughing beautifully with a group of friends. Her long blonde hair swayed perfectly in a high ponytail, catching the scattered light of the room.
Suddenly, she froze mid-laugh. Her posture went rigid. She swept her gaze across the room defensively, a look of sudden awareness crossing her features.
Our eyes abruptly locked from across the room.
Time stopped. The thumping bass faded into a distant hum. The crowded room vanished, leaving only her. She was flawless. She was a vision of perfection, far more gorgeous than I had ever dared to imagine my mate would be.
My wolf paced wildly and triumphantly in my mind. His pure, unadulterated joy flooded my dulled senses, wiping away the remnants of the tonic. He chanted repetitively, a singular, obsessive drumbeat echoing in my head.
*Mate. Mate. Mate.*
Somewhere in the chaotic background, I could vividly hear Vera shrilly screaming my name. She pushed through the crowd on the stairs, demanding angrily to know where I was going, her voice cracking with drunken desperation.
I ignored her existence. I ignored the music, the party, and the heavy Alpha responsibilities waiting for me tomorrow.
My sole, unbreakable focus centered entirely on my mate. I bypassed the crowd, stepping onto the dance floor, and headed straight for her.
