A New Life Unfolds

Sloane's POV

After much agonizing deliberation through the darkest hours of the night, staring up at my ceiling while my mind spun in terrifying circles, I made the difficult decision to split my time evenly between my aunt in Texas and my home here in California. The daunting reality of carrying a werewolf child had forced my hand. I couldn’t fathom leaving Vander, Myra, and Rhys behind. They were my chosen family, the only people who had offered me unconditional love when my world had crumbled to dust. Severing those ties and disappearing into the human world felt like ripping out a piece of my own soul. But on the other side of that coin, I desperately needed massive physical distance from Kaelen. His territory was still way too close to our borders, a constant, looming threat that kept my nerves frayed. I couldn't bear the terrifying thought of him somehow discovering my pregnancy and rejecting our innocent baby the same brutal way he had rejected me. I couldn't subject my child to the profound trauma of looking into her father's eyes and seeing nothing but disdain.

To protect me from that nightmare scenario, our Alpha Knox enforced a strict rule of silence regarding my condition across the pack. It was a heavy mandate, one that demanded unwavering loyalty. Of course, whispers sparked in the shadowed corridors of the packhouse, but they didn't last long. It was a mandate that Zane and Rhys fiercely upheld to crush any spreading rumors before they could even start. If anyone so much as looked at my changing figure or questioned my shifting scent, they found themselves slammed against a wall, staring down the bared teeth of our future leaders. Their fierce protection wrapped around me like an iron shield, allowing me to breathe without fear of Kaelen finding out.

Two long months passed by in a blur of crippling morning sickness and shifting pack dynamics. The tension hanging over my secret eased slightly when a wave of joyful, distracting news swept through the pack. Gemma joyfully announced her own pregnancy. She had been with Silas since they first realized they were mates two years ago, spending most of that time locked in fierce, jealous bickering that Rhys, Zane, and I used to place bets on. Seeing her radiant happiness brought a bright spark of hope to my anxious heart; it meant our babies would have someone their own age to play with as they grew up in the pack. Those weeks also involved celebrating massive milestones for the men who had become my brothers. We proudly watched Zane and Rhys officially stepping up into their respected roles as Alpha and Beta of the pack. The ceremonies were grand and emotional, shifting the atmosphere of our territory.

Rhys had moved out of the main house to occupy his own Beta residence, but he could never stay away for long. "Your belly is getting so big," Rhys laughed loudly during a casual visit to the house, strolling into the kitchen and unceremoniously grabbing my swollen stomach with both hands.

"You're not supposed to comment on how much of a whale I am beginning to look, you know," I shot back indignantly, swatting at his thick fingers and rolling my eyes dramatically.

Myra stepped up beside me and sharply swatted her son's arm for his lack of manners. "Show some respect, Rhys."

Rhys pouted, rubbing his arm defensively, but his wide grin remained. "Well, it's good to know that my niece is getting big and healthy in there."

"She is," I smiled, a genuine warmth spreading through me as I rubbed my hand over my protruding twelfth-week bump. "Only four weeks to go now."

Rhys relentlessly begged to know the baby's chosen name, digging through the fridge to steal one of my chocolate bars—a treat my pregnant stomach aggressively refused to digest these days. He tried every tactic to pry the name out of us, but Myra and I playfully and stubbornly kept our lips sealed tight. It was our special secret.

The lighthearted mood evaporated when Vander suddenly entered the room. He kissed Myra's cheek, his jaw set with Alpha business, and pulled Rhys away for a private, serious office discussion. As they disappeared up the stairs, a fleeting, sharp pang of profound sadness unexpectedly hit my chest as my thoughts drifted unbidden to Kaelen. He was my fated mate and the biological father of my child, and the lingering, vast distance between us weighed heavily on my exhausted mind. No matter the joy surrounding me, his absence was a gaping wound.

Those final four weeks vanished in a haze of physical exhaustion. Finally, on April 7th, my entire world narrowed down to the four walls of my bedroom. After hours of agonizing, bone-breaking labor that tested every single limit of my endurance, my beautiful daughter, Maura, entered the world. She weighed seven pounds and three ounces, crying out with a strong, healthy set of lungs that instantly brought tears spilling down my cheeks.

The moment Amity wiped her down and I held her against my chest, I gasped. My breath caught sharply in my throat as I stared down at the tiny, delicate features I had spent months dreaming about. She was the spitting image of Kaelen, blessed with his vivid, piercing emerald eyes and thick tufts of pitch-black hair. The very moment her tiny, fragile eyes pried open to look at me, she irrevocably stole my entire heart. She was perfect in every conceivable way, from her small button nose to her tiny, grasping fingers. I was terrified to even shift my weight, treating her as if she were made of delicate spun glass. But even as that fierce, protective motherly love consumed me, a quiet, suffocating guilt gnawed viciously at my conscience over her father missing this monumental, joyous moment. The profound sadness crashed over me like a tidal wave. He wasn't here. He hadn't fought for us, and now he was missing the most beautiful thing we had ever created.

"She's so gorgeous, Sloane," Myra whispered. She had been standing right by my pillow through the entire agonizing ordeal. "I'm so proud of both of you." She stroked the damp hair out of my face as she stared down at the newborn, her eyes shining with unshed tears.

Amity smiled gently from the foot of the bed as she packed away her medical supplies. "Are you happy for me to invite the guys in? They're all waiting impatiently outside."

"Yeah, you can let them in," I said softly, unable to take my eyes off my daughter.

The door burst open, and Zane and Rhys tumbled inside, practically tripping over their own feet in their desperate rush to see the baby. Vander followed closely behind them, a proud, fatherly smile lighting up his rugged face. I had caved just a few days prior and revealed the first name to Rhys to stop his endless whining, but the full truth was still my secret to give.

"She's beautiful," Zane and Rhys breathed out at the exact same time, making a soft wave of laughter echo through the room.

It was a beautiful, overwhelming scene, but the guilt tugged at my heart once again. Was I doing the right thing? I didn't want my daughter to miss out on her father, even if he wanted nothing to do with me.

"Can I hold her?" Myra asked, her gentle voice bringing me out of my dark trance.

I nodded, wincing slightly as I shifted my exhausted body against the pillows. Surrounded safely in my bedroom by my deeply devoted chosen family and our trusted pack doctor, Amity, I carefully lifted and passed my fragile, tiny newborn directly to the incredible woman who had been my rock through this entire nightmare.

"It's only right that you get to hold Maura, Myra first," I said softly, my voice trembling with emotion.

The words hung in the air for a single heartbeat before absolute shock washed over Myra's face. Her mouth dropped open, and then thick tears of profound, overwhelming happiness spilled over her cheeks. Vander immediately stepped up, his own eyes glistening as he wrapped his massive arms around her, comforting his weeping mate as she sobbed heavily over the profound tribute to her unconditional love.

After ten solid minutes of watching her emotionally rock my newborn daughter back and forth, Rhys finally lost his patience and complained loudly.

"Come on mom, stop hogging her," he chuckled brightly, gently prying the baby away. He carefully scooped tiny Maura into his strong arms with Zane standing right beside him, peering down in pure awe.

Rhys puffed his chest out. "Should have named her Maura Myra Rhys. It would have suited her better."

"Shut up," I laughed brightly with a heavy eye roll at his ridiculous suggestion. "Who would want to name their child after you."

"I certainly wouldn't," Zane agreed immediately, his tone deadpan and serious.

Rhys’s dramatically astonished expression quickly melted into exaggerated distaste, and as our loud, joyous laughter filled the warm room, he let out a playful, rumbling growl at us all.
