The Brutal Rejection
Sloane's POV
My heavy eyelids fluttered open. A dull, agonizing throb pulsed behind my temples. The room remained shrouded in dark shadows, save for a sliver of pale morning light creeping through a gap in the heavy curtains. I lay there for a second, disoriented. A thin sheet draped over my bare legs, but the chill of the room raised goosebumps along my exposed skin. I groaned, rubbing my forehead. My head pounded from the sheer amount of alcohol I consumed last night. The hazy memories of the party, the quiet upstairs hallway, and the locked bedroom door slowly crept back into my conscious mind.
I turned my head. Kaelen lay right beside me.
My true mate.
He slept flat on his stomach. The morning light caught the prominent ridges of his broad, muscular back. His face was turned toward me, his features stripped of their usual guarded tension. A faint, peaceful smile rested on his lips. I smiled softly in the quiet room, a warm flutter blooming in my stomach. We had fully mated during the night. The memory of his hands gripping my hips, his bare skin sliding against mine, and the raw, breathless weight of his body pressing me into the mattress sent a fresh flush of heat through my veins. Yet, my neck remained unmarked. We had not sealed our eternal bond with a permanent bite mark.
I traced the line of his shoulder with my eyes. I felt no rush. Kaelen was an Alpha. Tying myself to him permanently meant stepping into the role of his Luna. It meant taking on the heavy, demanding duties of leading and protecting an entire pack alongside him. I wasn't ready for that immense responsibility just yet. We had time.
Kaelen shifted. He stirred in his sleep, shuffling his large frame to find a better angle on the mattress. I held my breath, terrified of waking him. When his breathing deepened again, I carefully slid closer. My bare breasts brushed against his warm side. I let my eyes drift shut, letting out a soft yawn. Even in his sleep, he reacted to my proximity. His strong arm reached out, pulling my naked body flush against his. The solid heat of his chest enveloped me. Lulled by his scent and steady heartbeat, I let myself drift back into a deep sleep.
Hours later, the mattress dipped sharply.
I jolted awake. The sudden loss of warmth left me shivering. I blinked through the lingering haze of sleep and watched Kaelen. He stood at the edge of the bed, his back to me. He dragged his denim jeans up his muscular thighs and swiftly fastened the button. He grabbed a dark t-shirt from the floor and shoved his arms through the sleeves.
Something was wrong. The air in the room felt thick and suffocating. His movements were rigid, mechanical, and devoid of the tender warmth from earlier.
A sharp spike of panic pierced my chest. I grabbed the thick edge of the comforter and yanked it up, shielding my exposed, naked body from his sudden icy demeanor. Suddenly, I felt incredibly vulnerable.
"Where are you going?" I asked. My trembling voice betrayed my alarm.
He didn't answer. He didn't even pause.
He shoved his feet into his boots. His jaw was clenched tight, a hard muscle ticking near his ear.
"Kaelen?" I tried again, my heart hammering against my ribs.
He turned his head slightly, but his eyes never met mine. He stared blankly at the wall, his expression an impenetrable mask of stone. Without uttering a single word in response, he turned his back on me. He walked briskly toward the heavy wooden door, pulled it open, and strode out of the bedroom. The door clicked shut, leaving me sitting alone in the cold silence.
Dread coiled in my gut. My hands shook as I threw the comforter aside. I scrambled off the mattress and snatched my black dress from the floor. I hastily pulled the fabric over my head, not bothering to find my underwear. I grabbed my shoes in one hand and sprinted out of the room.
I raced down the long hallway, my bare feet slapping against the hardwood floor. The house was dead quiet. The partygoers had cleared out, leaving behind empty red cups and sticky floors. I ignored the mess. I tracked his lingering, intoxicating scent of pine and rain straight to the front door.
I burst outside into the crisp morning air. The gravel bit into the soles of my feet. Kaelen was already walking down the driveway, his long strides eating up the distance toward his parked car.
"Kaelen! Wait!"
I chased after him, my breath hitching in my throat. I closed the gap just steps away from his vehicle. I reached out desperately and caught his hand.
The familiar electric mate sparks ignited instantly beneath my fingertips. The warm, tingling sensation shot up my arm, a physical reminder of our undeniable bond. But the moment the sparks flared, he ripped his hand away as if I had burned him.
He turned around. The look on his face froze the blood in my veins.
His features were rigid, stone cold, and packed with immense, heavy regret. He stared down at me with dark, unreadable eyes.
"I'm leaving," he grunted. His deep voice carried no warmth. It held no emotion. It held no trace of the man who had held me just hours ago.
He took a step back, putting distance between us.
"Why? I don't understand," I whispered faintly. The suffocating dread rapidly expanded, crushing my lungs. "We're mates, Kaelen."
He stopped moving. His hands gripped the metal handle of his car door tight enough to turn his knuckles white. He stood there for a torturous second, staring at the glossy paint of his vehicle. Then, he spun around to face me.
"I never expected to meet you so soon," he declared callously. His tone was flat, razor-sharp. "I never imagined myself with my mate. And I never wanted one."
His cruel words sliced straight through my chest like a jagged knife. I gasped, stumbling back a half-step. My heart physically shattered behind my ribs. The pain blinded me. It was a sharp, tearing sensation, as if someone had reached into my chest and crushed my most vital organ barehanded.
He didn't want me. He never did. Last night meant nothing to him.
Tears burned the backs of my eyes, threatening to spill over my lashes. My inner wolf paced frantically, whining and pleading for her mate, begging me to fall to my knees and submit. But I dug my nails into my palms. I forced my spine straight. I refused to shatter in front of him.
"If you leave, Kaelen, I won't chase you," I warned him, my voice cracking but laced with stubborn pride. "I won't fight for someone who won't fight for me."
He stared at me for one last heartbeat. A fleeting shadow crossed his dark eyes, but he quickly masked it with cold indifference. He mercilessly turned his back to me again.
"Then don't."
He reached for the door handle. He stood tall, his broad shoulders tense, and delivered the final, fatal blow.
"I, Kaelen Black, Alpha of the Onyx Moon, reject you."
The official verbal rejection hit me instantly with physical force. It felt like a sledgehammer slamming into my sternum. The breath was stolen straight from my heaving chest. I gasped, my knees buckling as a sickening wave of agony radiated from my heart down to my fingertips. My stomach churned, twisting into painful knots.
Inside my mind, my wolf let out an ear-piercing howl of pure torment. Unable to bear the crushing weight of the severed bond, she turned and fled. She retreated into the deepest, darkest back of my mind. She slammed the door shut, locking me out to protect her own fractured spirit. The comforting, constant presence I had known my entire life vanished, leaving behind a cold, hollow void.
I stood paralyzed in the gravel. I watched through blurred vision as Kaelen climbed into his car, started the engine, and sped down the long driveway. The tires kicked up dust, and within seconds, he was gone.
A choked sob tore from my throat. My face scrunched up as the tears finally broke free, streaming hot and fast down my cheeks. I was falling apart. I clutched my chest, my hands shaking terribly from the shock.
I couldn't stay here. I couldn't let anyone see me broken and discarded on the dirt.
I fumbled with my small bag and pulled out my phone. My fingers trembled so hard I dropped it once before managing to dial Gemma's number. I crouched down behind another parked car, hiding myself from the large house.
The line rang three times before she picked up.
"Hello?" Her voice was thick and groggy with sleep.
"Gemma," I pleaded brokenly, my voice a wet, ragged whisper. "Please. Come take me home. I'm just outside."
Her tone shifted instantly. The sleep vanished, replaced by sharp worry. "Sloane? I'll be there in a minute. I'm grabbing Cleo and we're coming down."
"Okay," I gasped, wiping at my running nose. "Thank you. And Gemma... please don't say anything to the guys. Especially Rhys."
If Rhys saw me like this, his fierce protective instinct would snap. He would shift, hunt Kaelen down, and demand his blood in retribution. I couldn't handle that right now. I just needed to escape. I needed my bed.
Minutes later, the front door of the house swung open. Gemma and Cleo rushed out, scanning the driveway. They spotted me crouching behind the metal bumper of a dark SUV.
Cleo reached me first. She dropped to her knees, grabbed my shoulders, and pulled me into a painfully tight hug. She didn't ask questions. She didn't demand explanations. She just held me, letting me cry into her shoulder. My tears soaked the fabric of her shirt as I shook in her arms without uttering a single word.
Gemma knelt beside us, her eyes wide with sad understanding. She gently grabbed my hand and squeezed it. "Let's get you home," she whispered.
I nodded numbly. Cleo helped me to my feet, keeping her arm firmly wrapped around my waist. They guided me to Gemma's car. I slid into the passenger seat, curling my knees up to my chest.
Gemma started the engine and pulled out of the driveway, heading straight for our pack territory. The ride was suffocatingly quiet. A heavy silence settled over the car. I pressed my hot forehead against the cool glass of the window, squeezing my eyes shut. I prayed for my mind to go blank, but Kaelen's cold, rigid face flashed behind my eyelids every time I blinked.
Eventually, Gemma reached over and gave my shoulder a light shake. I opened my eyes. She gave me a small, pitying smile. My house stood just outside her window.
I murmured a hoarse thank you, pushed the door open, and stepped out. I kept my head down, walking quickly up the front steps. I unlocked the front door, slipped inside, and hurried up the stairs to my bedroom. I shut the door quietly, desperate to avoid drawing any attention from the rest of the house.
I walked straight into the attached bathroom and turned the shower dial all the way up. The water scalded my skin, but I didn't care. I stood under the harsh spray, grabbing a coarse sponge. I scrubbed my arms, my chest, my legs. I viciously scrubbed until my skin turned a furious, raw red. I felt dirty. I felt used. I felt discarded.
When the hot water finally ran out, I stepped onto the bathmat, shivering. I grabbed the black dress, my shoes, and the underwear I had shoved into my bag. I walked over to the small trash can in the corner and shoved them all deep inside. I wanted nothing left in this room that tied me to this catastrophic weekend.
I pulled on a large, oversized t-shirt and dragged my heavy feet toward my bed. I climbed onto the mattress and curled tightly into a tiny ball. I pulled the thick comforter over my head, craving the dark, enclosed space.
But the isolation only magnified the pain. I couldn't stop the broken, hiccuping sobs from tearing through my throat. My chest heaved as I cried into my pillow, the quiet room amplifying my pathetic, wet gasps.
A sudden, sharp knock on my bedroom door made me freeze.
I instantly held my breath. I flipped onto my side, squeezed my eyes shut, and pretended desperately to sleep. Please, I begged silently. Just go away.
The door creaked open. Footsteps moved across the floor.
The mattress dipped behind me.
Rhys’s familiar, comforting scent of cedar and musk filled the enclosed space. He didn't ask if I was awake. He just reached out, his large hands grasping my waist, and pulled my violently trembling body directly against his broad chest.
I broke. I spun around and buried my face in his shirt, clutching the fabric with tight, desperate fists.
Rhys’s unadulterated anger rolled off him in unimaginable, suffocating waves. His muscles were corded tight, his jaw locked. His broad chest rumbled continuously beneath my cheek with a silent, infuriated intensity. The raw, deadly aggression radiating from him was meant solely for the Alpha who broke me.
Yet, he said nothing at all, just gently rocking me back and forth in his strong arms while I clutched his shirt tightly and finally, exhausted, cried myself to sleep.
