The Intoxicating Mate

Sloane's POV

I flipped blindly through the television channels, spending the majority of Saturday in a state of deliberate laziness to let my muscles recover from last night's tense woodland run with Cleo. Rhys and the other guys had big plans to head over to the party venue early to help set things up, which left me alone in the house with a mountain of takeout boxes and the screen droning in the background. Around five o'clock, I finally dragged myself off the mattress to get ready. The massive party was happening at Alpha Kaelen's old residence. Since his pack numbers were surging, they were renovating the sprawling property into a second pack house. Tonight was the unofficial housewarming, and everyone from our circle was going.

I jumped into the shower, washing away the sluggishness of the day while carefully keeping my hair dry. Stepping out, I slathered a rich lotion over my arms and legs, savoring the fresh scent against my skin. Rather than fussing with my long blonde hair, which always seemed to drop loose strands in my face when I wore it down, I pulled it back. I gathered the heavy locks and secured them tightly into a sleek, high ponytail. My makeup routine was just as straightforward—a quick layer of foundation to even my tone, a sweep of mascara to widen my eyes, and a soft touch of elegant eyeshadow to highlight my features. I slipped on my strapless top and shorts, determined not to ruin my dress before I even put it on.

Right on schedule, a sharp knock echoed through my bedroom door. Gemma and Cleo pushed their way inside before I even had the chance to shout for them to enter. Both of them looked stunning in their carefully chosen dresses.

"You look so good," Cleo said, dropping her purse on the edge of my bed. "You should add a little eyeliner to complete the look."

I smiled at the suggestion and turned back to my makeup bag, finding the black pencil. They made themselves comfortable on my sheets while I applied it in the mirror.

"So, are you excited?" Gemma asked, watching my reflection.

I nodded, putting the cap back on the eyeliner. "Yeah, I am. It should be a fun night with everyone going."

I stood in front of my open closet, staring blankly at the row of shoes. I had my curve-hugging dress on, but the footwear eluded me.

"I don't know what shoes to pair with my outfit," I admitted. "Will you guys help me look?"

Gemma nudged me aside, her hands sifting through the options until she pulled out a pair of small black heels.

"These," Gemma declared, holding them up. "They match the outfit flawlessly, and they are short enough that you won't break an ankle on the dance floor."

I slipped them onto my feet. They fit perfectly, balancing the outfit without feeling over the top.

We piled into Gemma's car, the bass from the radio thumping against the floorboards as we cruised toward the Onyx Moon territory. The tension that had plagued Cleo the night before was gone, replaced by a radiant, blossoming glow.

"So, how did the talk go?" I asked, turning in the passenger seat to look at her.

Cleo beamed, a massive smile stretching across her face. "He did it. Gideon officially broke things off with his ex-girlfriend yesterday."

A wave of relief washed over me. "Was it messy?"

"Actually, no," Cleo replied, her voice soft but steady. "It went smoothly. She understood they weren't true mates. She knew this day would come eventually and told him she was happy for him. It takes a lot of grace to do that."

"That is amazing," Gemma chimed in from the driver's seat, her eyes fixed on the winding forest road. "What happens now?"

"We take our time," Cleo said. "We are mates. We have the rest of our lives together. We are just going to focus on properly getting to know each other without rushing the process."

Hearing her sound so hopeful lifted a heavy weight off my chest. We spent the rest of the lively drive singing along to the radio, the anticipation for the night bubbling up in our veins.

It took us nearly an hour to reach the destination. Gemma navigated the dirt paths and found a decent parking spot along the edge of the dense forest. We stepped out of the vehicle, and the sheer scale of the location took my breath away. The house was a massive, sprawling structure tucked deep within the ancient trees. Strands of warm lanterns hung from the thick branches and wrapped around the wide porch pillars, casting a bright, golden glow into the dark woods. The pulsing, heavy beat of the music vibrated through the wooden walls and thumped directly into the soles of my shoes. The undeniable urge to move, to dance, washed over us instantly.

We bypassed a few younger pack members lounging on the front lawn and pushed our way through the heavy oak front doors. The inside was a chaotic sea of bodies. We navigated the packed hallways, squeezing past laughing couples and loud groups until we reached the crowded kitchen.

The sharp, bitter scent of werewolf tonic hit my nose before I even saw the plastic cups. The medicated alcohol was brewed specifically for our kind, boasting a concentration that would put a human in the hospital. It was notorious for hitting fast and hard.

Gemma emerged from the fray near the kitchen island, holding three cups sloshing with the dark liquid. She handed one to Cleo and thrust the other into my hand.

I stared down at the tonic. The past few years had been rough, filled with a lingering grief that always sat heavy in my bones. But tonight, surrounded by the loud music and the smiling faces of my best friends, I wanted to genuinely enjoy myself. I raised the plastic cup to my lips and tipped it back. The horrible, burning taste slid down my throat, searing a path all the way to my stomach. I gasped, shuddering as the bitter flavor coated my tongue, but the fiery warmth spreading through my chest was immediate.

"Come on!" I shouted over the booming bass, grabbing Gemma and Cleo by their wrists. "Let's go dance!"

I dragged them out of the kitchen and right into the center of the packed dance floor. The music was deafening, an endless loop of heavy bass and sharp synth beats that demanded movement. I let the rhythm take control of my limbs. We danced wildly for ages, throwing our hands in the air and laughing hysterically. Whenever a song we recognized blasted through the speakers, we sang at the top of our lungs, our voices blending into the roar of the massive crowd.

I lost track of time as the night went on. The potent tonic did its swift work on my senses. I kept returning to the kitchen for refills, letting the bitter liquid blur the edges of the room until everything felt warm and weightless. I was buzzing heavily, a dizzying, euphoric high taking over my mind.

I was mid-spin, giggling at something Cleo shouted, when Rhys finally navigated through the dense crowd and found us. He stood on the edge of our little circle, crossing his muscular arms over his chest. He looked unimpressed with my clear drunken state. His brows furrowed in that familiar, judgmental scowl he always wore when he thought I was pushing my limits.

I ignored his judging looks. Instead of stopping to reassure him, I just shot him a wide, sloppy grin and kept shaking my hips to the heavy beat, letting my hair whip around my shoulders. I was having far too much fun to let his brotherly concern ruin my vibe.

Then, it happened.

A sudden, intense sensation slammed into my body like a runaway freight train. It was a physical blow, a massive wave of anxious, breathless anticipation that crashed over my skin and sank straight to my bones. The loud music, the stifling heat of the crowded room, the heavy buzz of the alcohol—it all vanished. My clouded mind sobered in a fraction of a second. My inner wolf, who usually rested quietly in the back of my mind, frantically clawed her way to the surface of my consciousness. She paced back and forth, her senses on high alert, demanding my immediate attention.

I stopped dancing dead in my tracks. My body went rigid.

My eyes desperately scanned the chaotic crowd, darting past the unfamiliar faces, frantically searching for the source of this overwhelming magnetic pull.

Then, I saw him.

The word mate swirled wildly in my mind, echoing in every corner of my skull as he stepped out of the shifting shadows. His imposing, six-foot frame towered over the surrounding partygoers. He was fiercely muscular, his broad shoulders easily parting the sea of bodies as he moved toward me. He carried an intimidating, strong Alpha aura that washed over the room, an invisible pressure that demanded absolute submission from everyone in his path.

As he drew closer, the details of his face came into sharp focus. He had beautifully tanned skin that glowed under the warm lanterns, and sharp, chiseled cheekbones that looked like they were carved from stone. But it was his piercing emerald green eyes that trapped me. They locked onto mine with a predatory intensity that made my breath hitch in my dry throat. He was hot.

A fierce wave of embarrassment suddenly flooded my system. The realization of what was happening, of who he was, sent the hot blood rushing straight to my face. I bit down hard on my lower lip, staring intently at the scuffed floorboards to hide my suddenly rosy, heated cheeks. I could feel the heat radiating off my skin.

His footsteps stopped right in front of me. The air between us crackled with a heavy, dangerous tension.

His large, warm hand reached out and gently caught my chin. He tilted my face upward, forcing me to meet his intense gaze. The moment his skin made physical contact with mine, electric sparks skittered wildly across my jawline, sending a jolt of pure fire straight down my spine. Our eyes locked in a breathless stare.

"I'm Kaelen," he introduced himself. His voice was deep and sensual, a dark rumble that vibrated right through my chest, making the frantic butterflies in my stomach go wild.

"I'm Sloane," I replied softly. My voice trembled, sounding nowhere near as confident as his did.

I noticed the sudden shift in the room's atmosphere. Sensing the heavy silence, I glanced around. The party had stopped moving. People were pausing mid-drink, halting their conversations, and just staring directly at the intense scene we were causing in the middle of the dance floor.

Kaelen did not seem bothered by the audience. He casually but firmly dismissed the staring crowd with a subtle wave of his hand. His Alpha command was unspoken but clear, sending them all quickly back to their drinks and their dancing.

He dropped his hand from my chin, shifting his grip to grab my hand tightly. His fingers laced through mine, the electric current humming steadily between our palms. He confidently guided me away from the noise, pulling me past Gemma and Cleo. I caught a fleeting glimpse of my friends standing near the edge of the floor, widely grinning and nudging each other as we walked past.

Kaelen led me to the main staircase. We climbed the wooden steps, leaving the thumping bass of the party behind us. He walked down the quiet upstairs hallway and pushed open a solid door, stepping directly into his old bedroom.

"You look gorgeous by the way," he murmured deeply as the heavy door clicked closed behind us, muting the music from downstairs.

I practically chewed the inside of my cheeks, trying desperately to fight down the crimson blush that flared back up to paint my face. My obvious struggle only earned a playful, vibrating growl and a dark chuckle from deep within his broad chest.

"You look cute when you blush," he teased, stepping closer.

"I look like a tomato," I laughed back nervously, my hands fidgeting at my sides.

He just shook his head in amusement, the corners of his mouth turning up into a devastating smile.

We gravitated toward the center of the room and sat together on the edge of his bed. The initial shock of the mate bond settled into a warm, intoxicating comfort. We sat there for hours, creating our own private world away from the chaos below. We laughed at silly jokes, talked about our lives, our packs, and our responsibilities. Every word exchanged felt like a puzzle piece snapping firmly into place, fully stepping into the intoxicating beginning of our mating process without rushing to seal it with a mark. I found myself leaning closer to him without realizing it, naturally drawn by the gravity of our connection.

Eventually, the heavy thumping of the music downstairs faded into the background of my mind, until the only sound I focused on was the steady rhythm of his breathing.

The conversation lulled into a charged silence. Kaelen reached out, closing the small physical distance between us. He gently touched my jaw, his warm fingers slowly and deliberately tracing the sensitive skin at the back of my neck. His touch sent a fresh wave of raw desire pooling in my lower stomach.

Casting all my lingering nerves aside, I made my decision. I leaned in confidently, closing the final inch of distance, and pressed my lips firmly to his.

The contact was explosive. The light, bitter taste of the medicated alcohol still lingered deeply between us, mixing flawlessly with his masculine scent. Our mouths moved together seamlessly. My lips parted, and our tongues tangled together in a desperate, heated dance.

His large hands slid down my waist and gripped my hips forcefully. With a sudden surge of strength, he pulled me directly over his lap, my knees straddling his muscular thighs. I ran my fingers through his dark, slicked-back hair, anchoring myself to him as the kiss deepened, heavy with intoxicating anticipation.

Moments later, he flipped us, his muscular form pressing me into the mattress as his lips trailed light, torturous kisses down my neck and chest.
